Modern school au

Breath, plumes of white as the weather was shivering cold, hands going numb as they were tuckIed into your jacket. Looking around for any sign of a teacher or a school bus.

The teacher, you didn't want to get caught and sent inside, something about parents getting angry if their child is left out in the cold. The bus, you were waiting for your ol' rival, and as it came in sight you could not help but to grin, one so large it hurt. And as the teenagers unloaded, down from the steps, they walked by giggling with comments, subject towards you. One boy, with wavy blond hair, was nudged at by the bus driver themself, on board of what the others were thinking.

"Hey Sabo, I'm gonna beat you to you breakfast, let's race." Though shivering, your words were bright and clear with confidence, no stutter, not even the slightest.

Sabo sighed, for what comments will once again be talked about him upon and the usual challenges you asked him to take part in.

"No running in the halls." He breathed out as walking out of the bus, speaking his place on not breaking the school rules.

"Ummmmmmm we can speed walk down the hall to the cafeteria." You tried to reason with him, you were not one to bend the rules much either. It is too much work to deal with, let alone the shame the teachers would give would be annoying real quick.

Two of Sabo's siblings came off of the bus after words. Ace, a man with dark wavy hair and freckles, same grade as Sabo. The other was a younger scrawny boy named Luffy, with messy black hair and a scar across his cheeck, he is in his first year of highschool.

Ace, his smug little self, patted Sabo on the shoulder and walked inside.

Luffy was moping around, extremely tired. He was a little of a wild card sometimes. Some days he was the annoying obnoxious loud person first thing in the morning and other times he is the last one to get off the bus, having to be literally dragged by one of the other two brothers.

"So, what do you say?" You agged on Sabo, hoping he would except this silly challenge. If he did not then another one would undoubtedly take its place.

"Okay, but that's enough for the week, we have finals coming up to focus on."

You alwaus knew Sabo had a slight competing strand in him even as composed as he tried to be about it.

"Okay let's see, we'll both stand at the doorway then we go on three." As mentione, both you and Sabo stood in the doorway, waiting momentarily for the number. "1-2-3" No shinanagans or foul play, simply counting as normal. Both you and Sabo speed walked around the corner and two the cafeteria doors. You lost, legs being shorter then his.

"Your legs are longer..." You whined, knowing full well that should have been more thought out then it originally was.

"A deal is a deal right? No more, I have to focus this week on studying. You should too."

"Yeah... it's not fair though... hey Luffy." You caught the brother's attention from a few tables away from the entrance of the cafeteria. "It's not fair that Sabo beat me because he has longer legs, right?"

Luffy seemed really disinterested at the thought, too busy stuffing his face with cardboard pancakes.

"I'll buy you another tray for lunch."

"Yeah, Sabo, that's unfair. Thought you were my brother." Luffy stated, going back to his food to eat, it was not the first time you have made Luffy team up with you with food bribery.

The blond just sighed, wondering if saying it was unfair somehow made you feel better about losing.

"See you later Mr. Number one student." You mocked him, walking away from the smartest kid in the school, maybe you should learn a thing or to from him. You sat at a table of your friends, Koala was the only there this early but always a warm welcome.

"Saw you talking to Sabo, you could be less competitive you know. It gets his attention but not sure it's how you want it."

"Y... yeah... I can't help it... You know." It was as if all of your energy disappeared and drained, replacing it with a crushing teen and a blushing mess. "It's a bad habit you know, it's the only way I can be confident."

"I can always talk to him about it, maybe setting a study session with him because your failing in a subject. It may be his second worst subject but he still makes ninties in it." Koala was a close friend of Sabo's, she may not eat with him at lunch or breakfast but other times it is football games and pizza places.

"No-no... I'll be fine." Your crush for this man was intense and its instantly shoved back when in front of him. Somehow you keep challenging him to random things and thinking your his rival to make things worse.

Later in the day, in one of your classes, the teacher asked you to go in the hall. Nothing bad, they reassured. It was, about your grade in that class. The other teachers have mentioned it before too, having access to your grades in all classes. Your grades were high in every other class, they wanted you to pass and have all decent grades but that one class kept holding you back. The teacher did not want to call you out on the matter, feeling it rude to give out personal matters as such. They offered to have tutoring lessons after school but you just would not accept. In the following days, had it not improved in such a short amount of time, they would call your parents to decide on the matter to cram in tutoring before the finals. What a nightmare it sounded to be.

When the bell rang for lunch, you found Luffy on the cusp of riding on the line of running done the halls. You caught up with him, remembering to give him your lunch and stood behind him in line. You asked what he likes, from one or two of the options they would give, and it seems he knew one of the cafeteria workers. Lunch lady Shanks. There is really no reason for it, no explaining, just lunch lady Shanks.

As you went to Luffy's table to set down the tray, you found Sabo with a stack of books next to him, staring directly at you with a sweet smile.

"What's with the dorky look on your face today?"

"You're going to be my student until finals." He gladly looked at you. He probably got the idea from Koala.

"Is that some weird kink of yours sabo?" Ace mentioned next to luffy, in between his plastic meal.

Sabo sighed and simply ignored the question and silly comment.

"I'm done so off to the library." Blondy did not seem to take anything for an answered as he dragged you to the library with the stack of books.

"Let's just start here, I imagine you're like Ace and if you don't understand the beginning then nothing else makes sense." He opened the book to page five, after all the nonsense summaries and introductions.

"Why... are you doing this? Koala probably asked you but... I don't want to waste your time."

"I'm not sure you're one to talk asking me to your challenges all the time."

"I'm sorry... It's a force of habit... I guess?" You were not sure what exactly to call it, it just happened but now, you are not in that mood. He is a small distance in front of you, a one on one conversation, and you can still realise you like him. Maybe, its because for once, he reached out to you.

"Why don't I make the challenge this time. If you get an A, or even a B plus, you get something for winning."

A challenge? There was no possible way you could decline such an offer after giving him so many. So you accepted and begun being tutored by the person you liked until the finals came around. And just as one of the requirements for winning happened, you made a B plus. To now, it was to decide on what you won.
