Chapter 4 - Protective instincts
---Marcus POV---
As soon as the car was on the road, Dimitri jumped to the back to retrieve the pup out of the carrier. Amelia had been standing at the exit, so we were forced to place the pup in the back, at least until we were out of sight.
"I can't imagine what the pup's been through." Dimitri spoke up as he took his seat, gently holding the pup on his lap. It was still sedated and would probably remain like that till the evening.
Glancing at the rookie, I held back a chuckle as his wolf was very much on the surface, softly lapping at any visible injuries. It was a regular occurrence in our world, since our saliva held healing enzymes, plus neutralizing compounds against our very own toxins.
So I let Dimitri clean the pup's wounds, frowning as my cellphone beeped before I handed it to Dimitri. He huffed as he opened the text, frowning slightly.
"Say, isn't it law to chip pups of the pack with their data along with that of any relatives?" He questioned as I kept my eyes on the road. I took a chance to remove my eyes from the dirt road we were on, eyes flashing over Dimitri's face before lingering on the pup.
"Adam sent you a text?" I asked, already knowing the answer but dreading it at the same time. What had started as a simple rogue retrieval was growing into a very big and serious case, one that I was determined to investigate.
Dimitri's grunt sounded through the car, followed with a low, rumbling growl. "Yeah, apparently someone filled in Outcast and Rogue as parents, only the pup's name had been filled correctly. Zayne."
My own growl rolled past my teeth, not liking the implications at all. His father a rogue and his mother cast out from the pack? But why cast the parents out and keep the pup? Did the mom never claim her pup as her own?
Zayne. It was a nice yet uncommon name. I glanced at the pup and snorted as Dimitri went back to healing most of the wounds. Errr. "Dimitri, I doubt the pup would be very comfortable waking up with you licking its stomach, so cut it out."
His tongue curled out one last time with a disgruntled huff as he shot me an unimpressed glare. With a heavy sigh, he nuzzled the pup softly as he grumbled, "I didn't get all the wounds yet."
"I can see that and trust me when I say I'm as pissed off as you are but how would you feel if you wake up and realize a total stranger decided to lick your stomach all the way down to your crotch?" I asked rhetorically, glad to see that my point came across as Dimitri crunched his nose up.
"Oh, ew...yeah, I see what you mean but-"
Nodding, I reached out to brush over Zayne's fur, sighing as my skin came in contact with the short, brittle fur that didn't fit with the harsh winter scenery that sped past outside. "Yeah, you just want to heal and nurture him. I know."
Dimitri sighed heavily as he cradled the pup a bit closer, rubbing soothingly over its head as it let out a few sleepy whimpers. "Damn Marcus, I know I had a soft spot for pups but you're just as badly influenced as I am. How's the pack going to react on him?"
I chuckled at that as I turned the van onto the driveway, "Twelve highly trained guys and three she-wolves, all of which haven't seen or smelled a pup in a long while? I think its best that you hand Zayne to me before getting out of the truck."
He frowned at that but I grinned, "If you set one toe out there with that pup in your hands, you'll be tackled instantly by fifteen wolves wanting to love and protect that little pup. You're the new kid in the pack, well, you were but you still have to earn most of their respect."
Dimitri pouted at that as I tried to hide my grin as best as possible; what I said was true but I didn't need to add that I was kinda jealous of Dimitri right now. I wanted to cuddle Zayne too damn it!
I could already smell the others as they all came outside, the scent of our own little pack calming my wolf as Dimitri begrudgingly handed over Zayne and got out of the car. Taking a deep breath, I followed his lead, knowing that the rest of the guys were probably confused with the fact that neither of us were making a move towards the back of the truck.
A high pitched whimper rang out as soon as I walked around the truck and came into their line of sight. Placing my feet firmly on the floor, I braced myself as I spotted four wolves already darting down the steps, tails wagging at an impossible speed while the rest of the pack seemed stunned.
"Easy, you don't want to hurt the pup, right?" I snapped sternly as Greg, one of the boisterous wolves wanted to jump up. He whined, circling around my legs before he hopped up on his hind legs, attempting to lick at the pup while I held it out of reach of the over-stimulated wolves.
Keening whines and whimpers rang painfully through my ears before I shook my head, growling warningly at the others. They got the hint and backed off, though grumbling and snarling at the others, our instincts confusing us all.
I knew I was being harsh and put out a cold front towards anyone outside the pack but I've never treated any of my brothers and sisters of the pack in the same manner. Now with the little Omega in my arms, my wolf was growling and pacing, snapping his jaws in warning and demanding respect for the pup in my arms.
"When you said to prepare the pack, I would've liked a bit more information Marcus." Lee grumbled under his breath, scratching at his salt and pepper hair that dangled in his eyes before he pushed it back.
"Sorry." I lamented, though grinning widely before I had to lean forwards to balance Wyatt as he placed his front paws on my back, resting his head on my shoulder as he stared at the puppy in my arms before licking at my cheek.
"Yeah, yeah, happy to see you too Wyatt." I got out while averting my face, not wanting to get an accidental French kiss from the wolf. The grey wolf huffed and hopped back down, circling around my legs before bowing with a whine, eyes focused solely on Zayne.
I rolled my eyes slightly, knowing exactly what he wanted, what they all wanted. "No, I'm not gonna put him down so you guys can overwhelm the pup. Besides, Zayne has just been under surgery so no, I'm not going to put him on the dirt."
Lee chuckled slightly as he walked closer, reaching out to gently thumb Zayne's ear. "Never knew you would be so protective over a pup Marcus." My Alpha chuckled softly but stilled his hand as I softly replied, "It's not just a pup Sir, Zayne is an Omega. An abused Omega."
I winced as loud barks and vicious snarls echoed through the air, the mind link going crazy as everyone started arguing and shouting at once. Even Lee, always calm and reassuring Alpha Lee, was having a hard time to control his wolf and temper as he stood in the middle of the raging chaos, trying to suppress his shift.
Everyone stopped and froze as Zayne yawned, letting out a soft whine at the end that was answered by several curious whimpers from the pack. Dimitri stared in awe as I felt amusement bubble up in my chest and shook my own head.
The power of a single Omega. Not even a full minute in our pack and he has everyone wrapped around his finger.
---Zayne's POV---
The first thing I felt was pain, or rather the lack thereof. I clearly remembered being thrown in the dog pit, attacked by three dogs that were easily twice my size. So why wasn't I crawling over the floor in pain instead of feeling heavy and numb?
Better yet, why wasn't I dead? Had Jay taken pity with me and stopped the dogs from killing me? Is that why I was inside? I nearly shook my head at the thought but stayed still, my body too heavy and uncooperative to move away from my comfy pillow and sighed heavily.
My nose twitched slightly as something tickled against it. When the sensation returned, I huffed annoyed, moving my head the slightest bit. The tickly sensation came back with a vengeance, making me sneeze out loud before I pawed at my nose, too tired to open my eyes and see what was tickling me so much.
It's annoying...stop iiiiiittttt.
When a low chuckle echoed through the air, I first thought it was Mike; no doubt he had talked in on his brother to let me sleep inside but I was a bit surprised that he succeeded. But when I heard another male voice rumble in soft laughter and the huffing growls of a wolf, I froze and opened my eyes.
I instantly started shivering all over my body as I saw an unknown man, who had been softly brushing over my nose, standing a few inches away from me. My head was currently resting on a bundle of fur, which moved with each breath the huge wolf beside took.
My instincts roared to life as I took in a deep breath, whimpering softly as I inhaled that all too familiar scent of high ranking male werewolves and flinched when several forms jumped up from the floor, even more jostling the bed as they all turned on me.
The shaking only intensified as the three wolves on the bed stepped closer, sniffing at my shivering form as I flattened myself as best as I could. "Hey cutie..." A voice behind me whispered as movement beneath me made me realize I had been unconscious on another male's lap.
When I felt a hand in the nape on my neck, I remembered the pain of a higher ranked wolf's claws and whined instantly as I let myself fall off the bed, staying on my back with my tail tucked safely between my legs.
The man on the bed muttered a curse while the slender form beside him frowned down at me. My mind couldn't focus on the important question of how I got there, all that mattered was that I had been on the bed.
I had slept on a superior wolf's bed. Oh my gosh, what have I done! Its not my place to sleep there, I should've jumped off as soon as I woke up!
Low grumbles echoed through the room, only reaffirming my scared thoughts before the door slammed open and revealed a huge and ticked off male.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to, I didn't know I was on his bed!" I whimpered in my mind, trying to keep myself on my back as my hind leg constantly swayed me over to one side. My lungs were aching for a decent breath as I started hyperventilating, eyes flashing from wolf to wolf in an attempt to see which one was going to attack me first.
One of the wolves hopped of the bed and quickly bounded over. I closed my eyes in anticipation, trying to brace myself against the all too familiar pain of canines tearing through my flesh.
I was so afraid and nervous of these wolves, not knowing if they what to expect from them that when I felt a cold nose nudge against my sensitive and wounded stomach, I shamefully lost control of my bladder in the last and ultimate attempt to show my submission and obedience.
The room was eerily silent beside the huffing breaths from the wolves and the sharply inhaled breaths from the three males as I prayed that they would get it over with soon.
