Episode 5

INT. DINER — NIGHT

Dusk had settled and the girls, unable to bring themselves to leave the area, have decided to sit in the diner next to the coffee shop across the venue and rest—just for a little bit—while snacking on burgers and fries.

They sit at a booth by the window, with Una's back against the entrance. She turns to look at The Bowery wistfully as Sam scrolls through her phone, chewing on a fry.

UNA: I wonder what's going on in there.

SAM: I bet the opening act's started.

Sam glances at the time on her phone.

SAM: Yep. They've definitely started.

UNA: Do you think anyone inside is livestreaming the show?

SAM: I'm sure someone will. But I read on Twitter that anyone who brings out their phone will be escorted out, so.

Una sighs.

UNA: I'm sure there'll be a next time.

SAM: And we'll get legit tickets then.

Just then, the bell over the door rings and a tall, slender man in a dark hoodie walks in. Sam stiffens.

UNA: Sam?

Sam's eyes widen as the man approaches the counter and pushes his hoodie back. Mathieu, Stillwater's lead singer—in the flesh. Una glances back to see what Sam is looking at, and when she sees it, her jaw drops. She urgently turns back to Sam.

UNA: Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.

Sam leans forward towards Una.

SAM: What is he doing here?!

Una whips her head back, and when Mathieu looks their way, she turns to Sam, who has panicked and ducked under the table.

SAM: He's looking over here!

UNA: Stop! Will you relax?

Sam slowly sits up.

UNA: Should we go talk to him? Say hi? Maybe we can ask for a picture.

SAM: What if he's busy? I don't want to disturb him!

Mathieu takes the paper cup to-go and starts to head for the door. It's now or never. Feeling her heart race in her chest, Una rises from her seat and as if the world is moving in slow motion, makes her way towards him. If she and Sam can't watch the show tonight, they could at least have this. Bracing herself for rejection, she clears her throat.

UNA: Um, Mathieu?

He turns to look at her. His eyebrows raise, but the slightest hint of a smile plays on his lips.

UNA: Hi. I'm so sorry to disturb you, but my best friend and I were supposed to come see your show tonight but—well, first we got on the wrong bus over here then we had to hitch a ride with this nice family whose car broke down. Then we found out our tickets were fake and...

Mathieu tilts his head. Una's cheeks turn red when she realizes she's rambling.

UNA: Sorry. I just—Well, I can't speak for Sam—

Mathieu looks over Una's shoulder to see Sam staring at them with a deer-in-the-headlights look on her face.

UNA: But I wanted to thank you. And the band, really. Your music brought us together, and it got me through some really tough times. I lost my parents around the time I discovered Stillwater, so you don't know how much your music means to me.

Mathieu's expression softens.

MATHIEU: That's really sweet, love, thank you.

With one arm, he pulls her in for a hug.

MATHIEU: What did you say your name was again?

UNA: I'm Una. Una Godfrey.

MATHIEU: Well, Una, I've got a minute before I gotta head back inside, but maybe you can introduce me to Sam?

Una nods her head vigorously.

UNA: Yes, absolutely, she'd love that.

Leading him to their table, Una grins as she notes Sam's even more shocked expression.

UNA: Sam, Mathieu. Mathieu, Sam.

Mathieu extends his hand towards Sam.

MATHIEU: Lovely to meet you, Sam. Una tells me you're a fan?

Sam looks like a bobblehead with her bulging eyes and nodding head.

MATHIEU: Well, she also told me you guys went through quite a bit today only to be disappointed. How would you girls like it if I put your names on the guest list?

Una and Sam exchanged surprised looks. Sam is too overwhelmed to respond, so Una takes it upon herself to nod.

UNA: That would—Are you sure? Because that would make our lives. You don't even know.

Mathieu grins.

MATHIEU: Of course. I gotta get going now but just enter through the back and I'll have my assistant, Lily, escort you girls to the VIP. Front row sound good to you two?

Sam looks like she's about to start crying.

UNA: It's perfect, Mathieu. Thank you so much.

Mathieu shakes his head.

MATHIEU: No, thank you. We wouldn't be here without your support, and I'm flattered you guys went through all that just for us.

Mathieu gives them one last smile before excusing himself to go to the Bowery, at which point Una and Sam turn to each other and scream as quietly as they could.

SAM: I can't believe that just happened. What did you even say to him?!

UNA: I just told him that we met through him and like, I rambled a bit about what we went through today so I guess, I don't know, he was touched?!

SAM: Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. We're watching Stillwater. We're gonna be in VIP!

They squeal then giggle.

UNA: Can you imagine if we left?

SAM: I knew burgers and fries were a good idea.

They hurriedly finish their food and rush out the door, not wanting to miss a second longer of the show.

CUT TO:

INT. THE BOWERY — NIGHT

As promised, a girl named Lily escorts Una and Sam through the backstage and out into the fenced-off VIP area where they noticed a bunch of other celebrities watching the show. The girls turn to each other excitedly and push their way through to the front-most part of the section.

Just then, the lights go down and the crowd goes wild. The opening chords of one of Stillwater's songs start to play, and when Mathieu comes on stage, he flashes the girls a smile and gives them a little wave. Overjoyed, Una and Sam squeeze each other's hands and scream their lungs out.

In the middle of the concert, in between songs, Mathieu stands in the middle of the stage and addresses the crowd.

MATHIEU: Earlier today, I met two fans that reminded me why we got into this music business in the first place.

He glances briefly at Una and Sam, who stare up at him with stars in their eyes.

MATHIEU: It's because of this that the band and I have decided to permanently come out of hiatus after tonight and start working on our new album, which should be out for you all later this year.

The crowd's applause is deafening. Sam turns to Una.

SAM: Holy crap!!!!

Stillwater starts up another song, and the girls lose themselves in the music, dancing the night away.

CUT TO:

At the end of the show, when the lights have all turned on and people are filing out of the venue, Lily re-emerges from the back and taps on Una's shoulder, gesturing for her and Sam to follow her. Confused but a little excited, the girls oblige.

CUT TO:

INT. BACKSTAGE — NIGHT

All of Stillwater are waiting in the green room, talking amongst themselves when Una and Sam are escorted into the room.

MATHIEU: There they are. How'd you girls like the show?

UNA: It was amazing. Thank you so much.

Mathieu beams at her.

MATHIEU: Well, I figured you might want to meet the rest of the band.

He gestures to his co-members, Rory—the drummer; Evan—the lead guitarist; and Michael—the bassist. Sam runs and hugs each and every one of them, stopping at Michael, whom she hugged the hardest. Michael laughed and patted her back. Una followed her lead and thanked each and every one of them for tonight's show.

MATHIEU: We'll have Lily keep in touch with you guys so that you'll be the first to hear the record when it comes out.

UNA: Thank you so much. You've already done so much, I—

Mathieu waves a hand at her.

MATHIEU: Before tonight, we weren't sure we wanted to give this thing another chance. This was supposed to be our last show. But seeing everyone tonight... knowing the stories people have with our music... Well, it changes all of that. And you helped.

Tears sting Sam and Una's eyes as they grip each other's hands tightly.

MATHIEU: Oh, and speaking of. You mentioned that you guys got on the wrong bus on the way over, so we've asked one of our guards to drive you home to make sure you get home safely.

UNA: What? Oh my God, that really isn't necessary. We won't make that same mistake twice.

MATHIEU: Please. You two are young girls and I don't think it's so safe to be heading home at night alone.

Sam nudges Una.

SAM: He makes a fair point.

Una gives her a look that says, 'You just want to see their car!' Sam shrugs back.

UNA: I can call my aunts to pick us up. It's really no worry. I think she'll want to hear from me pretty soon anyway.

MATHIEU: Are you sure?

UNA: Certain.

Mathieu nods.

MATHIEU: Well, let's go take a picture and then Lily will get your information. Our guards will wait out with you until your ride arrives, alright?

Una nods.

UNA: Thank you so much.

Mathieu smiles at her.

MATHIEU: Any time.

CUT TO:

Una and Sam stand in the back parking lot when Aunt Hilda's car pulls up to the curb. Two tall and burly men stand with their arms crossed behind them.

GUARD 1: This your ride?

UNA: Yep.

Aunt Hilda rolls down her window.

HILDA: Hi, girls! How was the show?

Sam's and Una's cheeks are starting to hurt from how much they were smiling. They get into the car and slam the door shut behind them, waving goodbye to the guards.

SAM: Aunt Hilda, it was amazing.

Sam breaks off into a story about everything they went through, conveniently slipping out the fact that their tickets were fake. Una sits next to her in a daze, smiling down at her and Sam's photo with the band, with her and Sam on either side of Mathieu.

HILDA: Well, I'm glad you girls had fun. Una?

Una looks up.

HILDA: Are you hungry? I've brought some snacks.

UNA: Actually... I'm pretty thirsty.

Aunt Hilda hands her a thermos filled with cold water. It's only then that the day's fatigue hits her, and she slumps in the backseat, happy and content.

CUT TO:

EXT. SAM'S HOUSE — NIGHT

Aunt Hilda slows to a stop outside Sam's house.

SAM: Thank you so much for driving me, Aunt Hilda.

HILDA: Of course, Sam. Any time.

UNA: I'll walk you to your door.

The girls get out the car and walk side-by-side in silence. When they reach the door, Sam turns to Una.

SAM: Thank you for today, Una. You don't know how grateful I am that we got to see Stillwater together.

Una smiles at her.

SAM (cont'd): And... I know I haven't been the best of friends recently, but I'm glad we're okay again.

Una pulls her into a hug.

UNA: Best friends forever, right?

Sam nods into the hug. When they pull away, tears are brimming in their eyes.

SAM: I still can't believe that happened.

UNA: I know, right?

SAM: Well... I'll see you in school on Monday?

Una nods.

UNA: I'll see you then.

The two part ways and Una slides into the passenger seat of Aunt Hilda's car.

HILDA: You seem happy. It's nice to see you girls together again.

Una smiles fondly at Sam's house.

UNA: You can say that again.

Aunt Hilda pulls out of the curb and drives into the night, headed straight for home.

OMG SO I KNOW I SAID THIS'LL PROBABLY BE LIKE 10 CHAPTERS BUT GUESS WHO WRAPPED IT UP IN 5?

WE HAVE FINALLY REACHED THE END OF ONE NIGHT ONLY, BUT THIS WON'T BE THE LAST YOU SEE OF UNA AND SAM!! I'll be working on Sam's story next, which you can see in my profile ("How To Mend A Broken Heart").

This chapter was pretty much wish fulfillment of my fangirl dream and I'm not even sorry. Thank you so much for the support and all the comments, and as always, if you liked it, please vote and let me know what you think in the comments below! <3
