Dee's Demons
"Well you still wouldn't have sold your car if you weren't doing this drug business...." I said to Didi one day. We had been together for a couple of months when I noticed he was getting worse by the day,he stopped going to work and he would wake up and hurriedly dress and go meet up with the junkies and losers he called friends, they would smoke weed and take codeine all day;sometimes when I go there to talk to him,he would make promises to change saying he just wanted me to be down for him and support him. When he got broke at the point,he sold his car and squandered the money on drugs after saying he wanted to start a poultry farm which he barely ran for a month before most of the chicks died due to lack of feed,he had bought a laptop and an expensive chain and a phone which he later sold when he ran out of cash to get his supply of drugs. He was left looking haggard like an HIV victim as the drugs were taking a toll on him, sometimes I would look at him and feel like giving up on him but something at the back of my mind kept telling me I could help him.
His mom was very sad about his situation and she never stopped blaming his problem on "village people" from his father's side who didn't want her only son to succeed.
I remember the first time I had met her,she had questioned me and looked at me warily until she was certain I didn't do drugs with her son.
The next couple of months saw us coming together to think of ways to help her son get over his addiction.
She had told me of a prophet from a white garment church whom she believed could pray for him and make him change so she convinced me to talk to him and follow him there.
It took a while before Didi agreed to go to Abeokuta where we met the man.
He had given a portion to him which made him throw up for close to an hour till I thought he would throw up his intestines. We had gone to the beach later for two days to pray and we talked at length during that trip and Didi promised a change. He always promised, I guess he was good at that but when it came to fulfilling the promises it seems like there is a force that makes it hard for him.
I stayed with him all through those times and when we got back from the trip, his demons took possession of him again.
That was when his mom came up with the idea of him being taken to a behavioral center where he was detoxified and kept for a couple of months to get his acts together. There he was attended to by doctors who talked to him everyday and ensured he was aware of the reason why he was there.
He would get angry at the beginning but with time he started being calm and he got better.
I would visit him and stay for a couple of hours to encourage him and through those times he made more promises about how he was a different man now and that he wouldn't go back to drugs,he told me then that he would love to spend the rest of his life with me.
"We're going to have three kids he said to me one day",I had laughed at him and asked him who would cook a large meal for a family of five and take care of the kids everyday. He had just smiled and said " I will always be there to support you". I was thrilled and thought to myself "ohhh he's finally come around"if only I knew what was to come.
He kept promising to live a more responsible life and I prayed to God to help him.
