Chapter 5
Day by day passed exactly the same. Get up, breakfast with the others, work, lunch, work, back to his room, dinner, sleep. Percy was falling into his routine faster than he had expected it, and what surprised him the most... day by day, he was also meeting new people. Others invited him to sit with them, introduced themselves, talked to him. Percy was so confused on how easy he was slipping into the rows ofHanson's legions. He had never expected it to be easy, in the slightest. And during the first days, it wasn't. But slowly, he was becoming part of the group.
Ofcourse, he was spending most of his time with Kathrine, the young mechanic in training. But he also found himself enjoying an hour ortwo with the vampire Stefan, and found time to go up to Joe for a beer as well.
A week passed like nothing, a second week as well. But Percy knew it wasn't always going to be peaceful, especially now that Electrica wasabout to return from her punishment.
And now, he stood in line with the vampires of the base, waiting to collect a blood bag. For who? And why?
To preserve his own life, obviously. Electrica was going to try and prey on him for sure after moving back in next to him. Admittedly nervous, standing in line with a bunch of vampires as the only human, Percy shifted from one leg to the other, waiting his turn. A ton of weird looks were thrown his way, yet nobody had asked any questions so far. Percy preferred it this way, if he had been honest. Finally making it up towards the counter of the medical bay, Percy exhaled a breath he didn't remember holding in.
"Percy?"
The man behind the counter raised one eyebrow at him; the boy smiled back.
"Yeah. Say, did Electrica pick up her ration yet? If not, I'm here for it."
"Percy, I can't just hand out blood to you. This is something valuable for everyone here. No, Electrica wasn't here yet." He breathed out a sigh, shaking his head. "She has probably forgotten it again, like usual..."
"That's why I'm here." Percy made a gesture towards his own neck, by now bandaged to add a small protective layer to his skin to prevent vampire attacks. "I'm trying to save myself right now. We... aren't on best terms. If I make sure she gets her blood, I won't be in as much need to defend myself."
A brief moment of silence later, a laugh came from his opposition and a nod of agreement ended the conversation. "Just take it and get out of here. We've got vampires to tend to. I can at least trust you that it will actually end up in Electrica's hands."
Percy shot a smile at him, then snatched a bag from the counter and weaseled his way between the waiting vampires out of the med bay. Success.
Quietly making his way towards his own room, Percy stared at the bag with growing interest. He had never seen a blood pack like this which was designed for drinking. Even the name of who had donated it was clearly visible on the pack, perfect with time stamps and type.
This one here was definitely criminal blood, as far as Percy could tell. Taken from the head of the training department, Naomi herself. Somewhat wondering if there was a taste difference between the races, Percy quietly hung the bag onto Electrica's door before making his way into his own room. Time to go to bed for him... He had to get up early tomorrow again to work.
Of course, not before locking his own room door and blocking the exit off with a drawer of his. He had learned early enough not to trust that woman next to him and for once, he wanted to have a good night's sleep without needing to fear for his safety. Or the safety of his DNA in Electrica's hands.
******
A deep breath. His scent. He is here, right now.
Electrica stared at the door to Parker's room without an ounce of sympathy. He was finding his way into the rows better than she thought. The scent of his pure blood wasn't letting go of her. Unbitten was always the best. There was no reason to attack. Not yet.
She looked down at her own door. A bag. Blood bag.
Eyebrows raised, she reached for it. There was something scribbled onto it.
'You're probably hungry. Since you will forget to get blood at some point again, I brought two so you have one in reserve. It's not mine. You know I can't have you find me anywhere, and you know why.'
A growl of her stomach. Right... She had forgotten, again. She could feel the desire for blood overcome her. How... unexpected. And expected at the same time. Electrica knew he would try to save himself one way or the other. Make peace, somewhat.
She smiled to herself. The least she could do was accept the offering presented to her. It was cute, she thought. Percy Parker running errands for her? She could get used to that. Another glance towards the small note scribbled onto her food.
"So you even admit it to me... You're a rat, Parker boy." Chuckling to herself, she slid the key into her lock and opened up her door, vanishing into her room with her meal. Good days, good days.
This proved to become interesting. She scribbled over the note, erasing its words. No one should find out about them. Not yet.
Another day, another night shift for Electrica. It was usually the same for the vampire. Get up at 4pm, get ready for the night, eat dinner, and start with her shift. Food during midnight hours. Finish at 5am. Freetime. Breakfast, then go to bed. It was weird for her, today.
The strong scent of Percy's blood kept her alert the entire time, from waking up during the afternoon to long after dinner where she was working on her new blueprints inside her own room. Parker hadn't attended dinner, that far she knew. His pulse was calm, too calm.
Asleep? Most likely.
Was it her problem? Not exactly.
Electrica sighed and shook her head. Leon must have slaved that boy quite a bit today. Glad she rarely met him. The forced day shifts during her punishment had been awful enough for her, especially because she saw Leon more than she wanted to. What a menacing man. She hated being around him. There was something about him that she couldn't quite picture, the calm before the storm.
Silent waters were deep, usually.
She had seen him fight far more than any of the others... Especially because Hanson loved to pair both of them up for more dangerous missions. She wasn't complaining... Leon was an excellent man to accompany anybody onto a mission, Electrica wouldn't trust anyone more than him to have her back if she needed him to. But...
He was creeping the hell out of her and that meant something.
Lowering her pen, the woman grumbled. She wasn't going to deal with the smell of a miserable and restless pureblood right next to her just because he was too stupid to wake up on time from naps. A glance at theclock, short before midnight. She was going to get some food anyway... no reason not to drop anything off at the boy's.
Minutes later, Electrica returned with a damping plate of noodles, and a bunch of chips for her. No need for much... She could live without food anyway, being a vampire, but the taste of food was worth the wasted time spent eating. A whiff of the room next door- Percy was awake?
"That kid finally woke up..."
A loud knock at the door and she could sense his heartbeat jump. Ha, she had startled him. Electrica dropped off the plate at his doorstep, then marched into her own room to continue working. She couldn't care less if he ate it or not...
One second. Two. Three.
Percy listened closely for any movement in front of his door, then pushed the drawer just enough away to be able to peek through the door. Eyes growing wide, he opened it fully. Food? For him?
"Wait..."
he mumbled and flashed a glance at Electrica's door. Was that drugged? Any sort of that? No, it couldn't be. She knew she was going to be the first suspect and Leon would raise hell upon her for drugging him. She wouldn't make that mistake.
His stomach growled, taking the decision from him. Percy sighed and picked up the plate, retreating into his room. At least that was far better than any midnight attacks in his sleep. With the door blocked off again and food in front of his nose, the boy was starting to relax in his own four walls.
Just the food and then back to bed. He had to get up in a few hours anyway again.
"Mr Parker, you will be doing overtime today."
If that wasn't a sentence to be greeted with, Percy didn't know what it was. Leon was watching him calmly from his own office chair, eyeing him from head to toe.
"Overtime"
Percy repeated slowly, receiving a nod in return. What could he have possibly done to be in the need of overtime?
"I haven't forgotten your wish of accomplishing heists by yourself. This night, you will accompany one of our men onto a mission. It will give you a feeling of staying unseen."
Percy swallowed. Right, he did tell Hanson exactly that. What had he been thinking?!
Of course she was making sure he was being trained that way, even tho Percy wasn't sure he was able to stomach breaking the law even more than he had already done.
"But please, do not fret... Of course you will be allowed to take a day off tomorrow. Missions like these are exhausting for body and mind. Regenerate, and I will expect you here in two days again."
Unable to do anything but nod, Percy found himself quietly sitting down at his own desk to start today's work, thoughts running wild. Leon seemed unbothered... Of course he was, Percy had voiced his interest in heists. But actually going on missions to break the law?
Percy knew he wasn't going to be exactly let go either for any felony he committed, Commissioner Granger could only protect him this far. Nodding to himself, Percy devised a plan.
Whatever they were going to do, he had to sabotage it.
In the early evening, just as dusk fell like a shadow over the motel itself, Percy was quietly riding up the elevator with a man in tow. He didn't know who he was nor what exactly his role was here, god forbid somebody actually told him what this mission was gonna be about. Percy was already annoyed. How was he supposed to plan ahead when there wasn't a plan to begin with?
"You're thinking too hard."
Percy stiffed up and flashed a glance at the man. Surprisingly slim for someone that worked as a field agent for Hanson, no one he would have expected to act under her wing. Black short hair, a calm demeanor and moreover, unbearably quiet.
"Sorry. Would be good to know actual details, tho." He wasn't able to suppress that small amount of sass within his words. Much to his relief, it wasn't taken badly.
"I'll fill you in once we're there."
Even the ride in the car was utterly silent. All Percy could think about was how he absolutely expected to be backstabbed the moment his partner was given the chance to. There was no way he was going to trust this man beyond his eyesight. At least he wasn't a vampire... one less thing to worry about.
A field trip to the city it was, for sure. Percy watched houses pass by, together with shops and offices, all merged into large skyscrapers. He had a feeling he spent more time being stuck in front of red lights than doing actual work. At least he was going to be paid for this... according to what Hanson promised him, that was.
Finally, he pulled over to a parking lot. A grocery store? And a large one on top of that. Percy had no trouble figuring out why, it was way too easy for their car to blend in with the others parked right there. No way was this their goal, right?
"We're searching for someone."
A glance over, and his partner was staring right at him. A gun was in his hand, carefully ushered into Percy's possession.
"You might need that. Depends on the amount of fuck ups you'll cost us."
Percy rolled his eyes and stepped out of the car, slamming his door more than necessary. Childish, he knew that, but he wasn't an idiot.
Turning, he began to follow along to wherever their path was leading them. So far, off of the parking lot and down the dimly lit streets of the raging metropolis... blending in was a piece of cake, at least fornow.
"For who are we searching? Where do we need to go?"
"Patience."
Great. Oh how much Percy hated all this unnecessary secrecy. How was he going to be of help with no one telling him jackshit? Eyes wandering, he tried to remain silent and calm. Where would they turn? He just followed along.
"Here we are."
Percy had nearly walked past it. What, that was all? It looked like a family building. Almost a bit disappointed, he turned to stop and stared at the man right next to him.
"That's it?"
"Yeah."
Silence.
"We're going to break in, aren't we?"
"Absolutely."
The man quietly pushed open the main door leading to the large staircase connecting each and every flat in this house with the exit.
"Why are we searching for- who are we even searching for?" Percy was quietly climbing the staircase with him, yet his curiosity got the better out of him.
"Later. All I need you to do is help me search for a log book. That's all.The man who keeps it was finally discovered by a colleague. Now we are going to steal his logs right from under his ass."
The man smirked at Percy, then stopped in front of a door in the third level of the building.
"Here it is. Any experience picking locks?"
"N-not exactly." That got him a raised eyebrow and a disappointed sigh. "I knew sir Leon said you're a rookie, but I didn't expect you to be that useless."
"Well excuse me..." Percy grumbled, already pissed off. He was watching quietly as his partner picked the lock of the front door, then quietly drew his gun.
"He shouldn't be home right now... Asshole left the city for the weekend. But surprises can happen..."
Percy felt himself being jerked backwards, just about in time as an arrow flew past him and buried itself into the door. A little shocked, he stared at the projectile that had almost impaled his chest, then back at his partner who had pulled him backwards.
"What did I just say? Pay attention."
A little frustrated, Percy stayed back and let his partner take the lead. Slowly, he began to realize what he meant before. Being made aware of so many traps and avoiding them with a bit of help, slowly making his way further and further... Percy was tense the entire time and he hated the feeling of being somewhere he wasn't supposed to beat all.
"Stay here. I'll search for the logs. Make sure nobody unexpected shows up."
Goddammit. Now there was no way he was actually getting a look at what they were going to find. Just standing here guard was not quite his style, at all-
Wait. Maybe...
Percy flashed a glance at his partner searching the room behind him. He wasn't paying any attention to him. Out came his phone, and a small text to Commissioner Granger was all Percy needed. He slipped his phone back into his pocket with a satisfied smile, somewhat proud he found a way to fuck this mission up for them. They weren't supposed to be here, and the police was going to launch an investigation if this guy was going to be involved with illegal matters.
Minutes later, the noise of a siren was audible coming closer and closer and... stopped right in front of the large building. Percy perked up, satisfied. They were here. Finally.
His partner looked up, pale as a sheet of paper.
"Cops?! Now?!" Gathering a bunch of notebooks, he clenched his teeth.
"Out out out! If they nail us down right now we are going to lose so much progress! I hope it's between one of those..."
Much to his horror, Percy was ushered to the nearest window- window?!
"Move,move!"
"Are you insane?! I'm not going to jump out of there!"
"Jump or die on this hill, rookie."
Opening the window, the man swung himself onto the window sill, then stood up. Almost effortlessly he collected his strength, then jumped-
...landing straight on the balcony of the next building over, already in the process of opening the balcony doors. Percy looked back and forth between his fleeing partner and the door; the sound of racing feet was coming closer.
"Oh fuck me..." he mumbled, squeezed his eyes shut and climbed out of the window. He hated being this high up, he was afraid of heights like nothing else.
"Jump, you idiot! What are you waiting for?!"
"I never did this, okay?!"
Percy took all his remaining bravery and jumped... landing on the same balcony, on his ass. He wasted no time, his heart was beating insanely fast as he followed into the different building. Doors closed behind him, curtains were drawn. Percy frowned as he was being led through the small flat, to their luck currently void of any persons.
Out the door, out the backdoor.
Blend into the crowd.
Back towards the car, sit inside, lean into the shadow.
Percy released a breath he didn't remember holding in, his heart hammering inside his chest. His partner was frustrated, finally a crack in his poker face. There was a moment of silence as he skimmed through the five notebooks he took along, only to light up in relief.
"It's here... the logs, they're here. We still got them. I'm glad..."
With that, the books were tossed into the backseats and the engine turned on with a soft purr, letting them drive off. Percy couldn't deny he was a bit frustrated they managed to steal the information despite his sabotage, yet he was glad he managed it out unscathed.
"What exactly is so important about those logs?"
For a second, his partner was silent. Finally, he breathed out a sigh.
"This man works for the slave auctions. One of the salesmen who market the slaves. The logs show the latest buyers for a few slaves... it took months to track this man down. Rookie, with those logs, we can find a BUNCH of masters and mistresses. Boss' territory will grow the more people we take down and restaff them with our own men."
Percy frowned. So Hanson was expanding again. And he just helped her doing exactly that.
"...so...what do you do with them? Those masters and mistresses?"
"You're funny, Rookie. We kill them, obviously. Kill a master and restaff his position instantly, and you've won an armee of guards and slaves."
Percy swallowed, not exactly pleased by that. He fell silent for a while, mulling over today's events. Hanson was growing bigger, slow but steady. A dangerous information for his boss. If they weren't going to do anything soon Hanson's power was going to outgrow the government.
"...slaves...how does this work? This system?" A moment of hesitation before Percy voiced his opinion, "I think it's cruel to degrade someone and move them into a subhuman category to serve others... what does Hanson do with slaves? I heard she's quite big in the industry."
His partner let out a chuckle, shaking his head.
"Go ask her yourself... I've got nothing to do with that. But I trust the boss to make good decisions for her empire."
Percy silenced again, frustrated. That asshole was of not help on getting any kind of information. Well... he had at least helped out a bit with telling him that tiny bit of his knowledge.
Percy was actually quite glad to get into his own bed. Done for the day and with a free one ahead, the boy quickly succumbed to his sleep...
