Chapter 8: The Female Friend

Duff’s P.O.V.

I rolled my eyes when Axl dragged Phoebe upstairs to that little office above us. Great, I wonder what they could be doing up there? God, weren’t they satisfied enough from last night? Surely they would have had their fair share of “intimate time”.

“Are we actually going to do something while we’re waiting for them Geffen peoples to show up and while Axl’s fucking his chick or are we just going to listen to them, and watch Slash here and his new girly friend?” Steven said in a jolly tone, while pointing to Slash and Phoebe’s friend getting friendly on the couch. Why there was a couch in a recording studio, I’ll never really know. There were a few office chairs under the mixing board table but that was it. Inside it was very clean and professional.  So I guess this is what Geffen Records are like.

“Oh! Actually, I came up with this fucking weird riff.” Mumbled Slash after sucking his girl’s face off. He got off the couch and she, I think her name was Gemma or something, looked disappointed that they stopped making out for two seconds, and he walked over to his guitar (we brought along our instruments, and Geffen had already set up Steven’s drum kit. It was a Pearl and it was a bloody beautiful kit). He put his guitar strap over his shoulders and pushed away his hair, which failed since it sproinged back in his face again, and he started to play this incredibly interesting tune.

“It sounds like a fucking circus tune or something, don’t you think?” He said after a little play of it.

“Hey, dude, play that again” muttered Izzy looking very intrigued.

Underneath Slash’s hair, I could see his confused expression and he started to play it again. After he finished we were all looking at each other in silence, when we suddenly heard rapid footsteps above us that came down the stairs and it was Axl. He had a piece of paper in his hands and he grabbed Slash’s arm and pulled him into one of the recording rooms. We could see them in the room since the walls were glass but we couldn’t hear them at all. Look’s like Axl had a stroke of genius or whatever, I didn’t really care. I was about to walk out for a smoke until I crashed into Phoebe. I was immediately hit with her beautiful strawberry or some kind of berry shampoo smell and again I nearly died from it. God it was a nice smell.

“Oh! Sorry, Duff. Oh, hey Duff. How are you this afternoon?” She sounded a little upset at first, but once we made contact it’s like we both slightly lit up inside. I felt a big gushy grin make its way across my face.

“Yeah, I’m going alright...” Ahh... lame response. She smiled at me softly and she walked past me and was about to walk into the room that Axl and Slash were in.

Me, Izzy and Steven all yelled ‘NO’ and she whipped her head around at us.

“What???” She looked like a startled deer.

“DON’T EVER interrupt Axl when he’s writing something, kiddo” replied Izzy smoothly.

“Why???” She still looked startled.

“Because if you brake his line of concentration, he throws an absolute shitfit.” Smirked Steven almost incredibly amused at Phoebe’s reaction to the subject.

She moved her hand from the doorknob and slowly moved away from the door sideways getting closer to me. I bravely put my arm around her shoulders, because I just couldn’t help myself, and I brought her closer to my chest.

“It’s alright, girl. Want to come out for a smoke?” She nodded her head and beamed up at me with her neck craned up to see my face. She was pretty short, compared to my height anyway, and she had a sturdy figure, slightly curvy, but it was very sexy. She wasn’t like those fucking beam poles with the fake everything. She had that natural golden blonde, unlike my hair. I had to die it all the time because my dark roots would come through. It was a bitch.

I had no idea how long her hair was up, because every time I’ve seen her, which let me remind you, has only been like three times, she’s had her hair up in a neat ponytail. But I guess the ponytail wasn’t that long. I didn’t realise how deep in thought I was until Phoebe reached up and poked my cheek. I snapped my head down and her and she started to laugh uncontrollably. She couldn’t fall to the floor because I had her tight in my grip, but not too tight. She started to go red in the face from shortage of breath and I eventually said:

“What did I do?”

After a whole minute of her laughing her arse off, she took a deep breath in and she finally said:

“I thought we were going out for a smoke but you just stood there staring at the wall with your mouth slightly open, like an idiot. No offense though, Duff.”

I felt my face go a little red because I didn’t realise that I had gotten so side-tracked. I looked around at Izzy and Steven and they were giving me that we-think-you-have-the-hots-for-her look. I dramatically rolled my eyes and suggested to Phoebe that we go outside.

After we walked outside the studio and into the bright sun, which reflected off the bleached concrete around us, I let go of Phoebe and she slipped on Axl’s aviators. I couldn’t help but feel the blood in me boil that he’s probably screwed her.

What didn’t she see in me?

Phoebe’s P.O.V.

I felt so comfortable in Duff’s arms, but I probably shouldn’t start thinking like that until I officially know if I’m really with Axl. I don’t really know why I was going outside with him. I hardly smoke anymore; I kind of got sick of the taste of the smoke and stuff.

When we were outside, the light reflecting off the concrete was bloody blinding, even though it was getting sort of late-ish in the afternoon now.

I looked up at Duff after I slid on Axl’s awesome aviators and he slipped on his sunnies, which were kind of being used as a hair band in a way, in Duff’s golden wavy locks. He pulled out a cigarette and lighter out of nowhere, lit it and inhaled deeply. Damn, I seriously couldn’t get over how bloody smooth he was!

Just as I was about to ask him if he wanted to go for a quick walk, a woman with long, styled black hair came up to us and placed her hand of Duff’s shoulder. She grinned at him with her full lips with freshly painted red lipstick on them.

“Oh hey, Monique!” They quickly hugged without affection.

“Have you guys started recording yet?”

“Yeah, but we’ve just walked about since Axl,” this woman had a flicker of something I couldn’t pick up across her face when Duff mentioned Axl’s name, “and Slash are “in the zone” at the moment.” He scoffed and made quotation marks with his fingers when he said ‘in the zone’.

She laughed nervously before asking if Izzy was inside, Duff said he was and she said goodbye to me before going inside the studio.

“That’s Izzy’s girlfriend by the way, Monique” Duff commented.

“Righto...” I had no idea what else to say.

Duff’s P.O.V.

I wasn’t sure if I should blurt out that Monique was in a relationship with Izzy, but sometimes Izzy would often share her with Axl, and once, they did have a... well to be blunt... a threesome a few months ago. I remember hearing them in Axl’s room...

Anyway, Monique was often on an on and off relationship with Izzy, but whenever her and Axl laid eyes on each other, something really was there; a spark of some sort.

“You wanna go for a walk?” I eventually asked Phoebe since she was looking bored watching me smoke my cigarette. She nodded her head and smiled and we began walking along the Strip.

We walked in silence, which I hated, as we watched L.A. slowly come alive late in the afternoon. Strip clubs opening their door, those creepy lights in the alleyways started to flicker to life and the queues started to build up as people were waiting to get into the ‘new hottest club’. It was near the end of ’86 and everywhere else all over America it would be getting cold as fuck, but in L.A. the weather was perfect and slightly balmy with the waft of sea air you could smell when you were close to the end of the Strip. Since it was getting dark, the normal person would be feeling hungry, wheras I was due for another hit of smack, but I thought that Phoebe would be feeling peckish. We walked past a little pizza place and asked her if she wanted something to eat. Me by suddenly saying something startled her a bit since it had been over 40 minutes of utter silence.

“... Yeah, I’m feeling pretty fucking hungry right now.” I laughed when she swore.

“I can’t see you as the swearing type.” I flirted a little but and I could see her blush. With Monique being on the scene I knew deep down that Axl wouldn’t be able to control himself and he’ll end up hurting Phoebe. I can just see it happening. So therefore, this was my chance to prove that obviously I was way better than Axl.

We walked into the pizza place and she chose what she wanted. Before she ordered she patted around for her wallet and her face changed to pale.

“Fuck! I don’t know where my wallet is.” She said quietly.

“It’s okay, I’ll pay.”

“No, no, lets go back. I think I left it in your crash pad... I hope.”

I put my hand on her shoulder and looked her in the eyes.

“It’s okay, it’s like 10 bucks anyway. Did you want a drink?” She nodded her head and she shuffled over to the fridge to pick up a lemon squash. As she did, I though maybe I should eat something to take my mind off my need for a shot heroin.

“That’ll be 19.95, man,” said the drooby waiter. I looked in my wallet and found one last 20 dollar bill scrunched up. I reluctantly handed it over remembering that we haven’t been paid yet for out gig at the Whisky last night. After 5 minutes of Phoebe tyring to remember where her wallet was, and she was really freaking out, our pizzas were ready to take away.

“Dude, calm down! I know the perfect spot to chill.” We were close to the end of the Strip right where the beach was. This was the PERFECT spot to impress a chick, let me tell you.

When we got there, Phoebe stopped complaining about the trek to the beach and she shut up when I sat down on the little hill with a light cover of grass over it, which looked over the entire coast and you could see the lights that were shining along the Pacific Coast Highway. It was pretty majestic at nighttime. I patted the ground next to me and grinned up at Phoebe. She looked down, probably blushing since I had that effect on her *hehehe*, and plonked herself on the ground. We started to eat the pizza in, you guessed it, silence.

“Can we please talk? The silnce has been killing me all afternoon, Phoebe.”

She thought for a moment. “Whose that Monique girl?”  I winced.

“She’s just Izzy’s girlfriend...”

“And...? I saw the way she looked when you mentioned Axl’s name.” She said coolly.

“Well, that’s all I know, Phoebe. I promise.” She just shrugged. She knew I was lying but I didn’t care. If Axl really cares, he can tell her...

“What did sushi A say to sushi B?” I randomly asked her. I wanted ot lighten the mood, because I was getting sick of the silence crap.

“What?” she asked more in confusion rather than wanting to know the answer.

“Wasssabi” I said making a drugged out face. “Get it? What’s up B?”

She sat there staring at me with a blank face until out of nowhere she started cacking herself laughing.

“It wasn’t supposed to be that funny.” I said chuckling myself. She just shook her head, still uncontrollably laughing, until she nearly fell over backwards, nearly dropping her pizza box. I tossed my box to the side and reached down and grabbed her before she fell flat. I pulled her back up to me and she thudded straight into my chest and we slowly stopped laughing before looking at each other deep into our eyes.

Oooohh, is this some chemistry I see?
