Chapter 21: Long Time No See

Fair enough, it was packed that night; the dreaded night.

People everywhere and we had squished in as many as possible so of course that made the place impossible to hear yourself think since there were so many voices yelling over each other all at once. I couldn't imagine how much the noise would rise as soon as the band started to play...

They hadn't arrived yet, even they still had an hour till their show started, they still should have been backstage to double check on the technical (amps, volume of the speaks etc.) and to talk themselves up to it or whatever band members do to prepare themselves before a gig. I was anxious enough that night; anxious that I would have to eventually come face to face with the men, anxious about the amount of people there that night and how I'd have to serve most of them, and anxious that the guys hadn't turned up yet.

Must deep thoughts were suddenly interrupted when the people near the front doors of the Whiskey started cheering.

"We have arrived." A raspy voice yelled.

When I turned to see what the fuss was about, I saw them. Turned out the owner of this mysterious voice was Slash. Accompanying Slash was Izzy, Duff, Steven but no Axl. The men walked through the room, shaking some people's hands who were sitting down at the tables, and more people started wolf-whistling at them.

Gemma came over to me with a tray full of empty glasses, and somehow she managed to nudge me.

"What?" I asked not looking at her.

"Well, you going to say hello to them?"

"No. What about you?"

"Maybe. Slash looks quite nice tonight."

"Seriously?" I said glaring at her.

"What? I think I'm over it. I mean they're rock stars, what do you expect? Anyway you going to do anything or avoid them all night?"

"Yep. Here let me take that and you can take them backstage to let them set their shit up." I snatched the tray off her and scuttled behind the bar, just missing the boys.

Keeping my eyes on them, I began to stack the dirty glasses, ready for washing, into the large sink attached behind the bar at the side. But because I was an idiot and I was concentrating more on the boys rather than the glasses, one just so happened to slip out of my hand while I was stacking it and it smashed to the ground.

"Shit!" I hissed.

"Whoa, you alright?" Some man asked, no doubt they were peering over the bar bench.

"Yeah, I just let it slip out of my grip that's all." I replied as I grabbed the small dustpan and brush and began to sweep up the broken glass.

When I stood up and walked over to the bin to chuck in the glass, I managed to keep my back to the customer's faces, and that's when I heard someone say my name.

"Phoebe?" the voice asked, similar to the one that just asked me if I was alright.

"Is that you?" The more this voice talked, the more familiar it became.

"Yeah?" I asked, and when I turned around I wished I hadn't have.

Standing there, staring at me with soft eyes and a confused face, was the one and only Duff McKagan. He was just as beautiful as I remembered. Soft, dyed and wavy blonde hair, and he was wearing a thick denim jacket with a black CBGB's singlet on underneath. Somehow, he actually even looked sexier than before. More seasoned in the face compared to when I last saw him.

Shit.

"Duff! Hey dude... how you going?" I stuttered as I wiped my hands on my apron.

"Yeah great! How 'bout you?"

"Same old."

"God it's been so long eh?" he breathed out. "You look great." He said looking up and down as much of my body that he could see. Thank god the bar blocked most of it.

"Yeah, so do you actually." I shyly mumbled looking down at my feet.

"Well I do try." He laughed as he jokingly swept a hand through his hair, and flicked a side over his shoulder.

I couldn't help but smile at that.

"So can I get you anything?" I said as quickly as possible to eliminate any awkward silences that were surely about to grow.

"Ah, just a beer thanks." He said as he reached around the back of his pants to get out his wallet.

"Oh don't worry about it. Drinks are on the house for the band members tonight." I said what I was told to say as I filled a clean glass with beer from a tap.

"Seriously?" He smirked. "Well there's nothing bad about that." He chuckled.

When I handed him the glass he continued to look at me, with his chin resting in the palm of his hand.

"How about after our gig, I shout us a drink and we can you know just catch up?"

"Umm..." I hesitated.

"Come on, just you and me. What do you say?"

I suppose one drink won't hurt.

"One drink." I smiled holding up one finger.

Duff grinned and eventually picked up his beer.

"Well I better get my shit ready. Promise you'll come up close-ish to the stage so I can see you during the show?"

"Maybe." I couldn't help but blush.

An hour passed and it was time for them to play, but I hadn't seen Axl turn up yet. Maybe he came in around the back? Maybe he came in and I didn't notice? Anyway, he must have been in the building somewhere because suddenly the lights dimmed and my boss walked on stage.

"Alrighty everyone. Some of you may know that we have a special act tonight."

The crowd cut him off with cheers, yells and clapping.

"Alright, calm down." He chuckled. "Now, are you people ready to experience the 'most dangerous band in the world' right in front of you?"

More cheering.

"Back from their world tour, welcome Guns N' Roses!"

My boss quickly jumped off the stage as the whole room rushed to the front of the stage, and the boys scuffed on stage, except Axl; he ran.

So Axl is here...

Long story short, they were amazing. The energy that oozed from them was unbelievable and their performance was somehow even better than what it was a year and a half ago. They had so much energy that it rubbed off on the crowd and they were all insane; hand-banging, singing (more like yelling) along to their songs, ripping clothes off and swinging them around, and the eventually onstage. Bras seemed to be the most throw onstage object that night.

I was able to keep Duff's little promise and I forced myself to go up near the stage to collect empty glasses and take more orders, and I managed to catch Duff's eyes. He grinned and threw me a wink, and Izzy somehow saw this, walked over to where Duff was and looked in the crowd to find who he was winking at. That's when I scuttled away hoping Izzy didn't see me.

When they finished, they blew their kisses to the crowd and jogged off. Yes, jogged. Somehow they still had energy after one and a half hours of full on performing, to jog off stage. The crowd kept cheering, and slowly they all moved away from the stage and sat back down, and some came back to the bar to get even more pissed.

I was serving drinks with Gemma and another worker for what seemed like hours until the people eventually calmed down and sat for chatting with their friends, and others wobbled out the door. At roughly 1am the place was still comfortable, I was cleaning up the bar and someone in my peripheral vision sat down.

"How were we?" Duff asked, smiling tiredly at me.

"You were pretty great. Even better from when I first saw you man." I smiled, leaning across from him.

"How have you been, Pheebs?" He said, his smile disappearing.

"Alright."

He paused, looking down at his hands.

"I missed you..." He mumbled after a while.
