Bravepaw's P.O.V

I stood nervously, shifting my paws and watching as Hawkspirit and Y/nspirit sat, silently cheering me on. "Bravepaw. Do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your life?" Redstar looked down at me and I gulped. "I do." I replied. He hopped down from the rock. "I, Redstar, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn." He looked at me, pride shining in his eyes. "From this moment, you shall be known as Braveclaw. StarClan honours your bravery and knowledge and we welcome you as a full member of WindClan. According to tradition, Braveclaw shall sit vigil tonight while we sleep."

I sat vigil in the camp, watching each crevice and crack, muttering a silent prayer to StarClan. Before I knew it, Y/nspirit was bounding out of the warriors' den and dismissed me. "Go lay in my nest. I'm sure Hawkspirit won't mind." She purred and padded up to the rock, waiting for the rest of the dawn patrol to get up and she led them out of camp. I yawned and padded sleepily into the warriors' den and laid down next to Hawkspirit, aware that they shared a nest. Hawkspirit opened his eyes and got up. "Braveclaw go ahead and sleep as much as you want. I'll come wake you before sun-high." He licked my ear and padded outside.

I got up, yawning and stretching before padding out of the den. Tigerstripe saw me and waved me over with his tail. "Braveclaw I know this is an apprentice duty but all the apprentices are out. Can you check to see if the elders need something?" He asked. I nodded. "Of course!" I purred and bounded over to the fresh-kill pile, grabbing two rabbits and taking them over to the elders' den, dropping then in the middle. "I brought you fresh-kill!" I announced. They looked at me and purred. "Thank you Braveclaw." They nodded gratefully, Nightbreeze looked at me. "Braveclaw, I don't mean to bother you but do you think you could get us fresh bedding?" He asked. I nodded. "Of course! I'll take Tigerstripe to help me!" I turned around and padded outside, happily going to Tigerstripe. "I don't mean to bother you Tigerstripe."

I got all my chores done and looked up at the sky. Y/nspirit lay happily next to Hawkspirit, their fur shining in the sun. They groomed each other lazily and curled closer to each other. I knew they had chemistry, but I wonder just how deep that chemistry reached. I looked around and found myself the only one without a mate. Fluffypelt ran around, chasing three little she-kit's while Gorseclaw lay curled around his two sons. Greenbreeze was happily curled up with Ravenclaw. I sighed in defeat and laid down, head on my paws. A shadow fell over me and I looked up. "Mind if I lay here?" The dark figure asked. I shook my head. "Go ahead." I rolled on my side and curled into a ball. Soft fur wrapped around me and I sniffed the air. Tigerstripe. I purred softly.

The sun was going down and I watched Y/nspirit and Hawkspirit lean against each other. "I can't wait, Y/nspirit... I'm so nervous. What if I'm not-" Y/nspirit cut him off. "Hawkspirit how many times do I have to tell you to calm your nerves. You're going to be great." She licked him between the ears. Tigerstripe sped out, Hawkfeather after him as they raced out of the camp.

When Hawkfeather and Tigerstripe came back I raced up to him. "Tigerstripe!" I looked at him, worry in my eyes. He shook his head. "I'm sorry... It's... It's... It's Tigerstar..." I widened my eyes. "What happened..?" I whispered. He pressed his forehead to mine. "I don't know... I walked into his den and he was dead..." He whispered. "I'll stand with you when you make the announcement." I offered. He shook his head. "I need to do this alone." He said. I nodded and sat at the base of the rock, staring up at him. He called the Clan together and when he told them what happened the Clan called out in sorrow. He leaped down with regret and pressed his forehead against mine. I stayed there with him until sun-rise when the elders dragged Redstar's body to be buried. I watched and sighed. "I'm sorry." I whispered. He shook his head. "It's not your fault." He whimpered. "It's my fault." I shook my head.

I laid with Tigerstar as he had asked me to. I sat there, stroking his back with my tail while he fell asleep. I left for a minute and sat outside of the den, sniffing the air and looking around camp. I wondered who the new deputy would be. I knew it couldn't be me. I hoped silently that it was going to be Hawkspirit or Y/nspirit but they've never had an apprentice before, at least not fully.

When I woke up, Tigerstar was gone and I stretched, leaving the den and finding Tigerstar in front of the rock, looking tired and weary. I rubbed my head under his chin and he purred. "Good morning, Braveclaw." He purred. "Good morning Tigerstar." I purred back. "Have you thought of who your new deputy is going to be?" I asked. He shook his head. "Unfortunately I haven't... I can't think straight." He sighed as if he were older than dirt. "Then we'll think it through together." I sat next to him and we started discussing good qualities in the cats. Eventually we came down to a list that consisted of
•Hawkspirit
•Ravenclaw
•Nightmare
I nodded. "I think Nightmare would be the best one to choose. He's sacrificed himself for WindClan more times than I can count. Hawkspirit has never had an apprentice so he can't be it and Ravenclaw isn't interested." I looked at him, his spirits seemed to have lifted and his eyes looked brighter. "Yes. Thank you Braveclaw." He bowed his head gratefully and leaped onto the rock. "Let all cats old enough to catch prey, gather beneath the Tall Rock for a Clan Meeting!" He called, cats slipping out i
of their dens. Nightmare lurked in the corner of the crowd, looking displeased with the meeting already. "It is time for me to appoint a new deputy." He scanned the crowd silently before his eyes found Nightmare and he sat. "Nightmare shall be the new WindClan deputy." He called. Nightmare looked as though he'd just been dipped in cold water. "I am honoured to be WindClan's new deputy. I hope to serve you well!" He called. Tigerstar nodded and leaped down, dismissing the Clan. Nightmare padded over. "I hope you don't mind me asking but... Why did you chose me to be the deputy, Tigerstar?" He asked, eyes shifting side to side. "Because you are a fine warrior, you have sacrificed yourself more than any other cat I know. I'm sure Y/nspirit would agree." He nodded in dismissal and Nightmare nodded, walking away. Y/nspirit ran up to him and tackled him, tail wagging viciously.

I woke up, stretching and walking out of the den. Tigerstar stood in the middle of the clearing, waiting for me. I purred and wagged my tail, running over and nuzzling him. He purred softly and we padded out of camp. We passed Hawkspirit and Y/nspirit bristling and growling at each other. "Well maybe you shouldn't have killed MY rabbit!" Y/nspirit hissed. "I don't understand why you're so upset over a rabbit! We were working together!" Hawkspirit lashed back, looking confused. I ran over. "What's wrong?" I asked. Hawkspirit looked at me, his confusion melting a little. "He killed my rabbit!" Y/nspirit hissed. "If you were working together, it wasn't your rabbit. It was both of yours." I pointed out, tilting my head. "You shouldn't be fighting over a rabbit. Leaf-bare is almost here, it doesn't matter who killed it, as long as you catch prey." I looked at her. She looked away, embarrassment in her eyes. "I guess you're right Braveclaw. I'm sorry Hawkspirit, I was overreacting. Forgive me?" She asked, ears pressed flat to her head.

It's been a moon and the moor was covered in snow. I shivered, soft fur brushing against me. "Braveclaw?" Nightmare asked, looking at me. I looked up at him. "Yes?" I asked quietly. Ever since I had become a warrior, I had been torn between two cats. Tigerstar and Nightmare. He licked me between the ears. "I know what you're going through, but I have decided to be the bigger cat and step down for your happiness. I withdraw myself from being in between you and Tigerstar. I want you to be happy, even if it hurts me to do so." He nuzzled me and I licked his cheek in return. I was only just made a warrior and was already having these problems. I shook my head. "But I don't want you to be unhappy either Nightmare. I can't be with both of you but I can't leave one of you unhappy..." I whispered. "Don't worry, I'll find another cat." He assured me. "But what if you don't? I'll feel bad for the rest of my life!" I complained. He let out a purr of amusement and licked my cheek. "It's okay. If it means you being happy then it'll be worth it!" He mewed optimistically, padding away to the warriors' den. I sat in the clearing, feeling more uncertain than ever.
