Second Chances

"Just give her time,"

Gwen had caught up to Trent outside. He was sitting at their normal lunch table by the giant willow tree in the courtyard. His head in his hands.

"I doubt time will change anything. She's never gonna talk to me again," Trent said. Gwen sighed and gently rubbed his back, her eyes roaming the campus when a surprising sight caught her eye

"Wow," she said "That's an unlikely pairing,"

Trent looked up confused, only to blink in surprise. Courtney and Duncan were walking together out of the library entrance. Duncan's hand was gently resting on her shoulder as they talked in low voices to each other.

Trent watched them disappear towards the academics wing of the campus. His eyebrows scrunched together in confusion.

Gwen stood up slowly "If you'll excuse me, I gotta go do something," she said, nodding at Trent before quickly rushing after Duncan and Courtney.

"I wonder why they called me into the office," Courtney murmured, Duncan smirked

"Probably to give you an award or something," he said. Courtney smirked at him as the pair walked into the office. Courtney was greeted with a giant bouquet of yellow roses. The receptionist smiled at her as she handed them to her.

"Uh.. I don't remember ordering flowers-"

"Yellow stands for friendship," came a voice from behind her. Courtney turned to see Gwen standing cautiously in the doorway. Her short black hair pulled back by a purple headband. She wore dark blue skinny jeans with an expensive purple blouse Courtney found herself wishing she had in her closet.

Gwen slowly stepped forward, her hand clutching a coffee cup from the school's cafe. Courtney slowly lowered the flowers to her waist, her face showing barely any emotion

"Why?" Courtney asked. It was all she said. Gwen sighed and looked down

"When I moved here I promised myself I wouldn't be that snotty rich bitch everyone knew me as anymore. And what I did last night was a total bitch move. I feel awful Court. Especially when I knew we had just been getting close. I'm so.. Sorry," she said, her face showing genuine remorse. Courtney stared at her for a while, before sighing. And setting the flowers down on the table

"You really hurt me, Gwen," she said. Crossing her arms over her chest. Duncan stayed back, watching with his hands in his pockets.

"I know.. God I know Court. But you have to believe me, I really am sorry Courtney-"

"Do you like him?" Courtney asked, Gwen blinked in surprise, before a blush spread across her pale cheeks

"I.. Don't know. Things all just happened so fast," Gwen mumbled, rubbing her head. She blew out a long breath "But I can definitely say I don't feel like him and I can be just friends,"

Courtney nodded, ignoring the pain in her heart as she swallowed hard. She slowly raised her chin and looked at Gwen "Then go ahead. Trent and I were never a possibility anyways. I see the way he looks at you. Trent is my best friend. If anyone knows that look, its me. He really likes you Gwen," she smiled faintly. Gwen's eyes widened, and she smiled cutely

"Really?" she asked, a little too excited. Courtney flinched a little, and Gwen held her hands up "I uh.. I mean.. Really?" she stuttered. Courtney giggled a little and nodded. Gwen slowly lowered her hands and raised a brow

"But.. What about you? I don't want to just go after him when it'll break your heart," she said.

Courtney's cheeks blushed, and she slowly looked over her shoulder at Duncan. Who was looking at her as well.

Courtney looked back at Gwen with a smile "Something tells me I'll be okay," she giggled.

At that moment, the school's loudspeakers let out a low bell. Signaling an announcement.

"Hello Riverdale Students," Mr. Stones grave voice muttered through the speakers. Gwen, Courtney and Duncan shared a look.

"I'm speaking to you all to call an emergency assembly. All students please report to the auditorium at the start of 3rd period." Mr. Stone said, and the speakers beeped one more time. Meaning the announcement was over.

"What the hell was that about?" Duncan mumbled, coming over to stand next to Courtney. Gwen noted that the two actually looked quite good together. In a cliche sort of way.

"I don't know. But it seemed urgent. Lets go," Courtney said, leading the way out of the office.

Cody and Trent had caught up with them as they all sat in the back of the auditorium as it quickly filled with Riverdale students and staff. Courtney noticed Heather Blossom was standing up on the stage. Her face was paler than normal, and it almost looked as though she had been crying recently.

About 10 minutes of everyone settling in, Mr. Stone finally stepped out on the stage. He raised his hands, signaling the crowd to quiet down. The noise died down, and Mr. Stone slowly cleared his throat

"Hello everyone. I'm sure you're all wondering why you've been called in here on such short notice," he began. Courtney looked over at Cody, who shook his head in an 'I don't know either' sort of way. Courtney had a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach, and it was growing with every second.

The doors to the auditorium were slammed open, and the majority of the crowd let out gasps as two older people walked in. A man and a woman. Both sharing piercing dark eyes and slick black hair.

"Oh my God.." Trent mumbled. Gwen leaned over to see

"What? Who are they?" she asked. Courtney swallowed hard, recognizing the pair very well

"It's Mr. and Mrs. Blossom.. Jason's parents," she whispered. Sweat forming above her brow.

Why were they here? In the middle of a school day?

And more importantly, why did they both walk in with cops behind them?

"What the hell is going on?" Duncan whispered, Courtney watched as the couple slowly walked down the isle in the middle of all the seats. Towards the  stage. Heather let out a weak sob, and ran into her mother's arms. Mrs. Blossom hugged her daughter tight, stroking her long black hair.

"Attention everyone," Sheriff Keller, also Cody's father spoke. His attention looked over the audience. Everyone was very tense.

"At about 10 this morning, Jason Blossom's body was found at the bottom of Sweet Water River," he said. Everyone let out collective gasps, their heads turning towards one another in shock.

"I'm afraid to say, that Jason Blossom did not drown. He was shot," Sheriff Keller said. Courtney's face paled completely, and Cody gasped beside her.

Sheriff Keller stepped forward, his eyes looking over the crowd

"Jason Blossom didn't drown," he said "He was murdered,"
