Sad Songs

(Imagine this song playing during the first part of this in the background. Trent is singing in this)

Courtney Cooper walked through the front door of Pop's and looked around. Sure enough, there was Trent. Sitting towards the back of the restaurant in their normal booth. The very same place they met Gwen only a few nights ago.

Courtney swallowed hard, and pushed the bangs out of her face before slowly walking towards where he was sitting.

"Trent?" she asked quietly, stopping right in front of the booth. Trent looked up from his chocolate shake in surprise. He clearly hadn't expected her to show up.

"Court.." he smiled weakly at her. She returned it and slowly took her seat across from him at the booth. He got a waitresses attention and she walked over slowly. She was a middle-aged woman with long dark brown hair that was curled into a ponytail. She was wearing the signature Pop's uniform, and her lips were painted with the very same dark red lipstick Gwen always wore. She looked oddly familiar..

Trent leaned in to read her name tag "Hermione, is it?" he asked. The lady smiled with a nod

"I don't think I've seen you around here before," Trent said. She flushed

"Oh yes. My daughter and I just moved here from New York a few days ago," she said, grabbing the pen from behind her ear and clicking it "What can I get you?" she asked, her dark brown eyes scanning him over. Trent looked over at Courtney

"We'll just had a strawberry milkshake, please." he said. She nodded and wrote it down before walking away.

"She looks so familiar," he mumbled. Courtney rolled her eyes

"Hello, that's obviously Gwen's Mother. You really couldn't get that?" she asked. He shrugged a little

"Oh come on. I've only known Gwen for a few days," he said. Courtney's throat tightened

Yeah, and that was enough to make out with her in a closet.

Courtney sighed at her thoughts.

"So.." Trent mumbled, rubbing his black hair back awkwardly. Courtney looked at him with narrowed eyes

"You asked me to walk all the way here, and you mean to tell me you don't even know what to say to me?" she snapped. His eyes widened a little, not expecting her to snap like that.

Courtney noticed his reaction and felt her heart ping a little.

I still love you though..

Courtney squeezed her eyes shut and slowly opened them, she felt her hands clench into fists under the table, her nails digging into her skin. The pain was distracting her from crying like she wanted to.

"It's just... So weird," Trent mumbled, stirring around the cherry in his milkshake absently. "I always know exactly how to talk to you. But... After today.. I don't know what to say anymore,"

"I don't know either," Courtney whispered, her voice breaking a little

"Courtney," Trent said, leaning in towards her. Courtney stiffened a little, her breath catching. Trent looked into her dark onyx eyes with his mossy green ones "Please just.. Tell me how I can fix this, I miss us,"

Tell me you love me

"I.." Courtney stuttered

That you've loved me all along.

Courtney's eyes filled with tears

That what I'm feeling isn't just a big waste of time

"I don't know how to fix this," Courtney whispered, her voice breaking. The thoughts in her head fading away.

"Court-"

"I wish I could tell you what you want to hear. But I don't know how we can fix this.. I'm trying. I really am. To be the nice girl and put this all behind us. But I can't. It's too hard" Courtney stood up quickly, shaking her head. Trent's eyes widened

"No. Court, please-"

Courtney shot out of the booth, shaking her head. And smashed right into Hermione who was holding Courtney's strawberry milkshake.

The sticky pink drink spilled all down the front of Courtney's light purple sweater. She shrieked as the cold drink splattered all over her.

She looked down at herself then slowly looked around at everyone in the Diner. They were all staring at her.

Then they all started to laugh at her.

Courtney sniffled and wiped her tears away as she raced out of Pop's. Trent watched her go, not chasing after her like the clueless man he was. He stared at the remains of the milkshake on the ground. He looked up at Hermione, who was staring at him with a scared look on her face

"I didn't mean-" she started, but Trent shook his head. He dug around in his pocket and handed her a 20.

"Keep the change," he mumbled.

Courtney ignored her Father's words as she raced upstairs with tears streaking down her face. Her sweater was ruined. She slammed her bedroom door shut, and yanked the sticky, stained piece of clothing over her head and threw it to the ground. Courtney pulled at her hair and let out a loud shriek. She covered her eyes and wiped at her smudged make up.

She slowly dropped her hands to her sides and looked at herself in her vanity mirror. Her face was red and blotchy from crying. Her hair was clumped together from the sticky milkshake and messy from her hands pulling at the locks. She looked.. Horrible. She looked crazy.

Just like Cathy.

No. Cathy is not crazy. You know she isn't.

Courtney looked away fro her reflection and went into her shower. Hoping to wash the night away, just like her thoughts.

Riverdale High's Pep Rally was always one of the biggest nights of the year. Parents, students, and even pets all gathered on the famous Riverdale High Football Field for a night of games, shows, and most importantly-Football.

Gwen breathed hard as she tried to keep up with the rest of the River Vixens as they practiced their Pep Rally Dance. Gwen found herself falling behind by a few steps, and Heather sighed as she walked over and shut her iPod off. The girls all froze to look at her, their breaths uneven and labored.

"You guys, this is it. Pep Rally is tonight," Heather snapped "So get your dyed heads out of your asses and actually dance to the music. Including you, Cooper!" Heather seethed at Courtney. Who swallowed hard, and looked down at the gym floor.

Gwen rolled her eyes, and Heather walked over and turned her iPod back on. Their song playing loudly through out the gym. Gwen moved her hips and did her jumps on time with the music this time, but she could see out of the corner of her eye that Courtney was struggling still.

When the dance was finished, Heather took her place in front of them all again, breathing hard. Her long slick black hair was pulled back by a headband

"Good job ladies," Heather smirked at Courtney "And Courtney, maybe you should try laying off the chips a little more, okay?"

Courtney stiffened, but she remained quiet as Heather began pacing in front of them all

"The weather is predicting a down pour on the night of the Rally. But already, you're all raining on my parade with your sucky dancing. With Jason's presence still in our minds, all eyes will be on me. Will this beautiful exotic flower drown under the town's scrutiny, or will she be swamped by her emotions?" Heather's eyes narrowed, and she looked over the crowd of Vixens

"The answer, ladies. Is no and no," she snapped "Now, with that said... I need star power. I need the Pussy Cats... Stay limber ladies while I go make a call," Heather flicked her hair over her shoulder and walked out of the gym.

Gwen watched as Courtney slowly sat down next to her gym bag on the floor, and began unlacing her shoes. Gwen blew out a long breath and slowly walked over to her

"After this practice I'll totally need a pedicure, you?" Gwen asked, sitting down a few feet away from Courtney. Who slumped her shoulders a little, her eyes refusing to meet Gwen's

"I'll have homework," she mumbled.

Gwen bit her lip a little and began stretching more "I know everyone grieves differently.. But Heather is hosting a Pep Rally to cope with her loss. That's either brilliant, or psychotic, or both." Gwen mused.

"Yeah well, at least Heather isn't putting on an act," Courtney mumbled, shoving her shoes into her bag. "Pretending she's a butterfly, when shes really a wasp,"

Gwen narrowed her eyes "For the record, the only reason I went into that closet with Trent, was so Heather wouldn't."

"Oooh so you did it to protect me?" Courtney sneered.

"Damn straight," Gwen snapped. Courtney stood up slowly

"Okay so nothing happened between you and Trent in that closet?" she asked, crossing her arms over her shoulders.

Gwen opened her mouth, and closed it slowly. Courtney nodded

"Yeah. Exactly. You know, Trent and I were fine until you showed up," she snapped. Gwen growled and stood up to face her

"If by fine you mean he was oblivious, and you were pining after him in quiet desperation," Gwen snapped

"We were friends, at least," Courtney said. Gwen snorted

"Oh please, you were walking on emotional eggshells around him too scared to tell him how you really feel,"

"You don't know me, Gwen," Courtney turned away

"It's not my fault he doesn't like you!" Gwen snapped. Courtney slowly turned and looked at her. Gwen sighed "If that's what your thinking. It's not anyone's fault, not even stupid Trent's. It's just how it it. Most of the time, the people we like don't like us back. Romeo and Juliet are the exception. Not the rule,"

Courtney sighed and grabbed her gym bag off the floor violently.

"Don't ever be friends with me again if that's what you want. But how on Earth is any of this Trent's fault?" Gwen asked. Courtney glared at her

"Are you seriously taking his side!?" Courtney yelled "If this is your way of trying to be friends with me again then-"

"The Pussy Cats are in!" Heather cheered, suddenly interrupting Gwen and Courtney's tense moment. "Oh am I interrupting something?"

"As a matter of fact-" Gwen started

"No, you're not," Courtney smiled at Heather. Courtney gave a smirk at Gwen before looking back at Heather "As a matter of fact, I have a coupon for 2 pedicures if you would like to join me,"

"Courtney. Don't do this," Gwen whispered\

"Butt out, you gave up your chance to take the high road," Heather hissed at Gwen, before smiling sweetly at Courtney

"As a matter of fact, I'm in the need for a mani-pedi. I'd love to go with you," Heather said. She linked her arm through Courtney's and all but dragged her out of the gym.

Gwen watched them leave, a feeling of dread washing over her as her shoulders slumped.
