CHAPTER ELEVEN || ASHLEY
Back on the road, I follow the car in front. Dom looking out the window, grumpy and clearly dissatisfied with my answers. He's not the one driving as he usually is, I am. I guess it's a good distraction for me. Not a good enough one though, the memories find themselves playing on repeat in my head.
"Ash im not trying to pressure you... but what happened? You've got to tell me something. You didn't call... didn't text. Didn't show to anything for six years." There it was, that question again. A question that seems to follow me, that everyone seems to ask me. I wish I could forget it ever happened so I wouldn't have the answer to that question either.
"Can you just accept the fact I'm not ready to talk about it yet?" I huff, hands gripping the steering wheel so tight my knuckles turn white.
"You've had six years to be ready to talk about it." Dom responds shaking his head. I stay nothing, a dreaded silence returning to the car. The same silence, again lasts hours. Finally we reach Iowa City, a truck yard was the location sent to my phone. This is where Don would drive the truck back, following me. This is where I hopefully get some peace.
Pulling up in the truck yard, Dom and I get out of my car after Nick and Jośe get out of theirs. The pair talking about what they had previously stashed in my car and the truck.
Looking around Dom and I both examine the scene before us, something feels off. I can't pinpoint what exactly. But something is definitely wrong. Unease grows in my stomach with every second that passes.
"What am I driving back?" Dom questions and one of the men gesture over to an old busted truck. What could they possibly need that requires such a big truck?
Dom walks over to the Truck, and a few rattles and gentle bangs come from inside. In that moment, I realise. Glancing over at Dom we share a mutual look of understanding...
Bang. Bang. Bang. Comes from the truck as Dom and I look at eachother with realisation. My heart drops to my stomach at the realisation. The bad feeling in my stomach only growing worse. The feeling only intensifying as Jośe stops Dom in his tracks.
"Don't stop driving once you start. Get back straight away" he warned Dom who nodded.
"And Kelsey, there's been a change of plans." Jośe turns to me. Dom's shoulders instantly tense.
"What? She's not driving back with me?" Don challenges. I send him a glare, warning him to make the right decision and not blow the case.
"No. She's not. Nick is going back with you. And I'm heading to the outskirts of illinois with Kelsey. We have another pick up to do." Dom's eyes catch mine as Jośe speaks. I offer Dom a nod, telling him it's okay and to go. Dom nods climbing into the truck, phone in hand as Nick follows.
"Let's get going then." I shrug opening the drivers side only for Jośe to stick his hand out, stopping my door from opening any more. My blood boils as I look up at him.
"I was actually thinking we could have some fun before we head back." I raise my brow in disbelief watching as Dom leaves in the truck. I swallow the lump in my throat.
"I'm here for a job. If you need to get your dick wet, ask someone else." I sass, proving his words don't get to me. Despite the fear of uncertainty rushing through my veins. Jośe doesn't look all that pleased with my response, his jaw tightening, eyes growing darker.
"You'll change your mind, just wait." I scoff at his words and get in the car, watching as he walks getting into the passenger side.
Turning the key in the engine, I start driving again. Heading back. Not the same way we came, but similar enough. Again, the drive was silent, but it wasn't the same as the silence with Dom, this, is dangerous.
I continue driving trying to ignore the freak beside me, I can see his actions through my peripheral vision. He glanced from my thighs to my face before fixating on my thighs once again. The whole thing making the hairs on the back of my neck stand tall In discomfort.
The sound of my phone ringing grasps my attention instantly. I grab it thinking it's the ringleader, or Nick... but I was wrong. The voice that rung in my ears was familiar.
"It's Tej." My heart skips a beat, another old family member involved. His voice igniting another string of memories.
"Yeah- i said id get you your money next week." I scoff, playing it off as if I'm on the phone to a dealer.
"I know you can't say much, but Letty and Rome are a few miles behind you. Just incase. Dom sent us a signal." His words reminding me of what it felt like to be a part of something bigger.
"Yeah whatever, okay. Friday." I play along with the idea in my head as Jośe watches me.
"I'm glad you're okay. Good to hear your voice" is the last thing Tej says before the call ends. My lungs tense as I put the phone back in the middle console.
"Who was that?" Jośe asks, the bad feeling he brings just seems to be growing, getting worse.
"One of my dealers." I answer, hands gripping the steering wheel.
Silence soon returns again, lasting another few hours. Hours of Jośe undressing me with his eyes. Stalking me as if I'm his pray. It's like he's waiting for the right moment/opportunity to pounce. As we get closer to Chicago the silence breaks again.
"Stop. Pull into the dirt road ahead." He ordered, i nod doing as he says and pulling up. I can't help but hope Tej is tracking me somehow, and knows I've stopped.
"What are we stopping for?" I turn to look at Jośe but I'm cut off by his lips violently smashing into mine. Nausea instantly sets in as I push him away pulling a small knife from my pocket.
I press the knife against his throat barely able to contain my anger, "touch me again and I swear I'll slit your fucking throat!"
The smirk on his face almost insinuates he enjoys having a knife to his throat which makes me sick to my stomach.
"You really are one crazy bitch!" He throws his hands up in defeat reasoning with me. I press the knife against him slightly harder and he fully caves, begging, "Alright! Alright!"
Jośe distressed makes me chuckle, he damn right deserves it the sick freak. Pulling the knife away from his neck i fold the switchblade putting it back in my pocket with a subtle smirk. Before I question, "why are we here?"
"I'm waiting to pick up." He shrugs, i sigh my head falling against the seat. Wanting this all to be over with.
"And you couldn't do that with Nick, why?" I scoff watching as another car pulls up. Jośe shrugs.
"I wanted to wow you." He winks getting out the car. I watch as someone got out of the other car, I notice something shine in his hand and adrenaline pools in my stomach.
"Jośe! Gun!" My words are followed by a stream of gunfire. A bullet tests through Jośe's flesh as he jumps back in the car. The ringing in my ears strong as I press my foot firmly on the pedal, roughly spinning the wheel to get us off the dirt road.
"You good?! You hit??" I exclaim to the man next to me, my eyes flicker toward him seeing a stream of blood trickling down his arm. I didn't need an answer his loud groan was enough.
"Keep pressure on it okay!" I huff changing gears to get the speed up. We need to get out of here, fast. I know If jay heard that intelligence would be suiting up. That would put too many people in danger. Shaking my head knowing Jośe is too focused on his injury to worry about anything else i grab my phone putting it on my lap.
"I'm good. We're fine. Everything's fine. Stay put." I say loudly talking to intelligence, waiting a moment before finishing, "just keep pressure on it."
Lights flash on my rear mirrors, making me think for a moment that Letty and Rome heard the gunfire and sped up. Doing a double take in the rear view mirror, i catch sight of an assault rifle now pointed out the window. Shit. More gunfire. The rapid noise invades my ear drums, almost sending piercing waves of pain through my skull.
"Hold on! Shit!" Tightening my grip on the wheel i glance over at Jośe seeing him barely keeping consciousness.
"Jośe! Listen! I need you to stay awake and steer!" I can see the panicked look in his eyes as he stares at me in disbelief.
"What do you mean steer?!?" He exclaims panic lacing his voice. I lean over to the back grabbing two hand guns.
"I mean fucking steer!" My voice booms clearly just enough for Jośe to get a grip. He grabs the steering wheel, my foot still in control of the pedals.
I lean out the window, heart racing as I empty my clip into the car behind without a second thought. Hoping I've pulled off at least a few good shots, i grab my second gun ready to do the same.
The sound of loud revs fill my ears, bright headlights now obstructing my view of the car behind. The car now turning to the side, my head swings toward Jośe who begins losing consciousness. I grab the wheel, straightening the car In an instant. The sound Screeching tires and the smell of burning rubber invade my senses.
Watching in the rear view mirror as the car behind drives off the road, straight into a ditch. Completely flipping the car. My adrenaline rush subsides only for a second before two cars pin me in the middle of the road.
"Long time no see! Could've shot my forehead man, should look where you point that thing!" And there's another familiar voice...
