He Wished It Was A Prank Call

India team landed in Mumbai in a grumpy sleep deprived state, some had another flight from Mumbai to their home cities, some had decided to crash in Ro, Vi or Jinksy's place but the captain and two vice-captains of Indian cricket team were in the most foul mood cause they had an useless meeting (useless in their opinion) to attend.

"Mahi bhai ap chalo na humare saath" Virat whined for the umpteenth time,

"Arey main ja ke kya karunga?" Mahi tried to explain, "I am not the management anymore na kiddo"

"But" Jinksy said surprising Virat, given that Jinksy was never the whiny sort "The restaurant we decided to eat after is near BCCI office only, aap Mumbai traffic mein jaoge, fir aaoge bohot time lag jayega na. Usse better aap yahi ruk jao, thora wait karlo."

There was logic in what Jinksy said, and Mahi begrudgingly agreed.

He somehow didn't feel good about going to the BCCI office today, something nagged him in the gut. He wasn't very fond of that place anyway, no captain probably was, he reckoned, and the thought of that man being the president just increased his repulsiveness by manifolds.

But, as strong willed as he was, his kids get him to do things and they succeeded again.

As they walked into the lobby, Mahi spotted Agarkar sitting there, "You go on kids, I will wait and Ro bag yahi de de, tu phir usse wahi bhul jayega." Taking the bag from Ro he walked towards his friend as the kids headed to the board room.

"Ajit, kya selection ke bare me in much meeting that kya?" Mahi asked approaching Agarkar, he had been one of the selectors from West Zone since past two years.

"No" Ajit said in a flat voice "I was just fired."

"Kya?" Mahi asked shocked, the talent scouting from West Zone had been great in past two years then why would anybody fire him?

"The new director is changing the whole board" Agarkar said "Pata nahi Mahi kya chal raha hai, I think wahi inform karne ke liye aaj meeting rakha hai."

"He can't do that" Mahi said, "Something like this has never happened."

"Technically he can" Ajit explained "BCCI is a private autonomous company, the director can change anything he wants, yeah the board of course has to agree, par is bar board mein sare hi Goenka ke lobby ke hain."

"Hmm" Mahi said "Let's see, what happens."

In the board room, Jinks steeled himself to meet one of the few people that he hated from the core of his heart. He was not a spiteful person in general, but Goenka just somehow managed to effortlessly get on his nerves.

He glanced at Vi who was continuously tapping his feet on the sterile floors of the board room, something Jinks knew Vi did when he was anxious or irritated, this time it was the latter he believed.

A soft snore from beside them, drew their attention to Ro, who was, trust Rohit Sharma to do this, dozing off on his chair. Vi muttered something under his breath and went back to tapping his fit, Jinks just shaked his head, where was the bloody president?

Just then, Goenka walked in briskly, followed by the other board members, trying to look all important and showy. Jinks kicked Ro under the table to wake him up as Vi stood up to shake his hand out of courtesy, the mask of diplomacy and paparazzi smile instantly setting on his face.

"Thank you gentlemen for joining us in a short notice." Goenka said.

"Well we assume and hope its importance is worth the hassle." Jinks said in a bored voice.

"It indeed is." Goenka said pointedly "Well, you might not know, but I have decided to make some key changes in staffing and selector panels in here, we are changing up quite a bit and I would like if you could be open to similar changes in the team, I think it might work well in India's favour."

"What do you mean by similar changes?" Virat asked "You are not suggesting a complete drastic change in the team are you?"

"I think some big changes will be welcome for India" Goenka said

"The current core team works well, And we have our eye on the players we wanna try out in rotational basis" Virat explained.

"Well after the recent loss some changes..." Goenka started.

"Yeah we lost this one and we white washed the opposition in the last series, your point was?" Ro said in a bored voice.

"Let's not get hyper here gentlemen." Goenka said subsiding, "Anyway selection is something you can discuss with our new selector" he pointed towards the door as Manjarekar walked in.

"Hello Virat, Jinks, Rohit." He said in a sugarcoated voice.

"Hi" They replied in dry voice simultaneously.

"Are we discussing selection today?" Virat asked utterly irritated.

"It would be great if we could get things started for the next series." Manjarekar replied in a fake sweet voice that seemed almost nauseating to Virat "I actually have a few changes in mind."

"Let's hear them out" Jinks said trying to keep his cool, knowing full well that Virat was on the verge of dropping his facade.

"In the bowling department I think we could try out a new swing bowler" Manjarekar said "Bhuvaneshwari shall be our default option, but having a option wouldn't hurt."

"We hae thought about the same" Virat seeing it was a genuinely fair suggestion "Do you have a list of the potentials in mind from different zones.'

And the discussion went on with some, minor tiffs but Manjarekar seemed to be strangely sensible till they reached a certain topic at the end.

"Well with the current scenario" Manjarekar said "Me and my, I mean our, I mean the BCCI president, we both agree that a change in the wicket keeping scene is necessary for us."

Jinksy drew a deep breath, to control himself before speaking.

"But we think it isn't" Ro beat him to speak.

"We know what MS Dhoni meant to Indian cricket" Harsh Goenka "But change is..."

"Necessary and acceptable when natural" Jinks said "But unpalatable when forced down unnecessarily"

"But don't you think India should start looking for a replacement now?" Manjarekar said "Mahi's age and form..."

"MS for you" Jinks blurted out, the voice coming out harsher than he had intended to sound.

"And as for Bhai's age and form" Ro said, knowingly stressing on the word bhai "Cricket is about class and fitness and not form and age, he is invaluable to the team."

"But he wont be forever." Manjarekar tried a softer route "We should think about building a new..."

"We have KL, Wriddhi, Rishu" Jinks said in a firm voice "and to make them ready for the future we need MS in the team, we need Bhai."

"We understand" Goenka said through gritted teeth "But as your board president..."

"There's no room for argument here" Virat who was silent till now spoke with finality "With all due respect Mr. Goenka, it's me who leads the team into the ground, and if you can't give the people I want to work with, you should think about changing captaincy"

"Virat, I didn't mean it like..." Manjarekar started.

"So you will give me my team I assume" Virat asked with a bit of force.

"Of course Mr. Kohli" Goenka said in mellowed down voice "It was just a suggestion, but I am sure you have your own plans in place."

"I think you have nothing more discuss" Virat said with finality getting up "Thank you gentlemen"

"We have little bit of an engagement and this wasn't preplanned, so we will take your leave now" Jinks completed.

All three left the room without as much as waiting for a reply.

"Bhaaaaiiiii" Virat hollered approaching Mahi in the lobby "Chalo chalthe hain."

"Haa Bhuk lagi hai" Ro whined.

"Kab nahi lagti tujhe" Vi taunted.

"Tu.." Ro was about to retort but Mahi interrupted "Booking kismet phone pe hai?"

"Arey mere phone pe hai na" Ro said reaching for his phone in his back pocket "Phone kaha Gaya?"

"Yeh Raha" Jinksy said handing him the phone with a dead expression, he picked it up from the board table where Ro had forgotten it when they left.

And they left for the hotel laughing and gossiping.

Unbeknownst to them, a man watched them from his office, seething as he saw Mahi being the centre of the world of these three giants of Indian Cricket.

"Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Your kids are your strength...soon they will be your biggest weakness."

He picked up the phone "Implement the first leg of the plan tonight."

"Tonight?" Came the voice from the other end.

"Yes tonight." Said the man harshly.

"It's the beginning of the end of you Mahendra Singh Dhoni" The man smirked.

Oblivious to all this Mahi had a great day with his three kids.

At night they all had crashed into Ro's place and were having a gaming tournament within themselves, Rohirat vs Mahi-Jinksy.

Jinksy was the weakest player, so Mahi naturally chose to play with him, as Vi and Ro were teasing him how they will easily beat him. Now with Mahi in his team, even the amateur Jinksy was beating Vi and Ro at FIFA.

Suddenly Mahi's phone rang, "Private number?" He wondered, signaling them to pause the game and walked to the balcony to take it.

"Hello" Mahi said

"You have seven days" the man said.

"What?" Mahi asked

"Seven days to save your family." The man said laughing humourlessly

"Man, who are you?" Mahi asked irritated.

"It's immaterial" The man said "I call you again 7 days later, and I promise you my identity wont matter then, only thing that will matter is what I want."

"What?" Mahi asked but the call had disconnected.

"What the hell was this?" Mahi thought himself "Some kinda practical joke?"

Maybe, what else could it be?

"What was it bhai?" Jinks asked as he returned.

"Prank call" Mahi said and returning to the game "Jobless people with lot of time just being annoying."

Rohirat did end up winning the game as Mahi somehow could not take his mind off the prank call no matter how much he tried.

It was not a prank call. But Mahi had no idea back then. He now wished dearly, as he sat their in the front porch of his small house sometimes, he wished dearly that it had been a prank call.
