#44: You Lose The Baby.<3 (Warning: May Cause Your Eyes To Sweat)
Niall:
"Niall. Niall!" You cry as he pulls your car into the hospital parking lot frantically, ignoring the stop signs. "It's too early. I'm not ready for this!" He brakes at the entrance of the tall building and turns to you, holding your hand, which you've been grasping tightly to ease the pain of the contractions. "Y/N I know, I know. Our baby just can't wait to see us, I guess." He cracks a smile and lightly squeezes your hand. "C'mon, let's get you inside." He ushers you into the hospital and you are brought to a yellow delivery room in a haze of pain and haste. You and Niall didn't have anything packed or ready to bring to the hospital. Niall had just put in the car seat and bought the crib. You'd just picked out the paint colors for the nursery. But you hadn't even had your baby shower yet. It was too early and you knew it. You felt a nervous, sinking feeling as you were fitted into a hospital gown and nurses rushed around you, plugging things into the wall and easing you into your delivery chair. Niall was backed up into the corner, biting his nails and letting the technicians do their job. But by the way he looked at you, gravely and nervously, you could tell he was sharing the same sentiment. He was as worried as you were. The baby still had 2 months to go. You prayed that your baby would arrive safely. As your contractions continued, Niall flocked to your side and clutched your hand, kissing your forehead and murmuring soothing words into your ear. Soon you were given an epidural and the contractions were hitting hard. The masked doctor came in and informed you that it was time to push. Niall gripped your hand and pushed your damp-with-sweat hair out of your face as you used all of your strength to deliver the baby. "You're doing so well, Y/N, so well." Niall whispered in your ear. With one final push, you soon felt some relief from the pain that had been hurting you for hours. The doctor lifted up a tiny baby and soon ordered the nurses to come over, frantically murmuring to them. You lay your head back, too tired and debilitated to even keep your eyes open. Everything went black and fuzzy as you heard Niall muttering your name anxiously. You woke up a little while later. It was still daylight, and the room was calm and clear. Only Niall's mother sat in a chair near the bed, a gutted look on her face as she stared at the ground. You glanced around the room. No baby carriage or incubator was nearby. Neither was Niall. "Where is my baby?" You said weakly to Niall's mom. She snapped her gaze to yours and took your hand. "Oh sweetie you're awake." She said. You looked her dead in the eyes and repeated your question. Her gaze fell to the floor. "I...I'm so sorry Y/N." She said solemnly. Your face went pale. "Oh god." You said, refusing to believe it. All of your work, and time and love that had gone into this pregnancy. For nothing? Your child. Niall's child-gone. "Did we lose her?" You asked, tearing up. Niall's mom nodded, still staring at the ground. "Where...where is Niall?" "Outside, at the car I think." she responded. You peered out the window of your room that overlooked the parking lot. You could clearly see your bright red SUV sitting in the first row of cars. You stood, against Niall's mom's protests, and approached the window. Your palms fell against the window as you stared at your car, where Niall stood, leaning into the open backseat. As Niall's mom urged you to go back into bed, you could unmistakably see Niall pull something out, but it was shielded from your view. He backed away from the car, still holding the mysterious object, and tossed it strongly into the nearby empty street. You saw him let out a yell and fall to his knees by the side of your car, crumpling into a heap. You could now see the object as it tumbled across the street. It was your baby's car seat.
Harry:
"How far along are you, again, ma'am?" The attendant says as she squints at your belly, moving her stethoscope around on your exposed belly. "Fourteen, right, babe?" Harry says for you, exchanging a glance with you to confirm this. You nod distractedly, not liking the tone of voice the doctor has. She pulls out the ultrasound device from a lower drawer. "Do you mind if we do an ultrasound? I'm not picking up on the heartbeat." "Of course." You respond, your own heartbeat beginning to quicken. Harry glances down at you with a smile as you lay back in the long chair. He looks so proud, so excited. Yet you have a dark, sinking feeling growing in your stomach. And you didn't like it. "Alright." The doctor says, squirting some clear, jelly-like substance from a bottle onto your belly and gliding the device along the now slick skin. You and Harry's gazes turn to the screen, which only shows a blurry blob. A lump begins to grow in your throat as you stare at the screen for several seconds. Your eyes then search the attendant's face, which has now turned solemn. "Doctor?" You ask tentatively. Harry's gaze bounces from the screen to you to the doctor, all while his grip on your hand tightens. "I don't see anything." He says. "I don't see anything!" He repeats, rage building up in his voice. The doctor pulls the wand away and sets it down. "Mr. and Mrs. Styles." She says slowly. "I'm sorry but-" Harry releases your hand and turns, shaking his head and putting his face in his hands. "No!" He shouts in agony. He kicks a nearby trashcan, knocking it over. "Mr. Styles, please!" The attendant scorns. "Please calm down, sir. This happens sometimes. Losing a baby is a common occurrence." The doctor averts your gaze as you remain frozen on the chair. "You can try again in a few weeks. I'll go get you some information on what to do next." You sit on the chair as she quickly leaves the room, which is now eerily silent. You peer up at Harry, whose face is twisted in a heart wrenching grimace across the room. You don't know what to say. "God." Harry sobs in a muffled cry, his hands cupping his face as he sits down in a nearby chair. "This isn't supposed to happen." He says with a sniffle. "Not to us." You sit up and turn to him, slowly lowering your shirt over your now empty-feeling belly. The shock has kicked in, and you are merely silent. Silent and hollow. You meet Harry's gaze as he gulps, the sunlight from the window highlighting the tear streaks on his cheeks. He rushes over to meet you on the chair and pulls you into his arms. You two remain there for many minutes, holding each other tightly without a word, trying to think of anything that can be said to make this better. There isn't.
Louis:
"Ice tea and coke, right babe?" Lou asked with a smile as the waitress came around for drink orders. You nodded. Louis repeated the order back to the confused waitress. "She's pregnant. Weird cravings lately, you know? We're having a girl." He turned to you and smiled warmly. As the waitress went to get your drinks, Louis began peering over the menu. You smoothed your maternity dress as you placed a white cloth napkin on your lap. "What are you getting?" He asked, not taking his eyes off of the laminated paper. You suddenly did not feel very hungry, and a pain in your abdomen began flaring up. You made a slight grunt as you shifted around in your seat, trying to ease the pain. That made it worse. It then felt as if your abdomen was being lit on fire, and you clutched at your stomach as you let out a cry. "Y/N?" Louis asked, petrified. "What's wrong?" You heard him quickly get up from his side of the table and crouch beside you. "Is it the baby?" You nodded. "I think so." You let out another cry as the pain flared up again. "Lou help!" You cried. He stood quickly and grabbed your coat. "It's gonna be alright, babe, we'll get you to the hospital right now." He took your hand and slowly eased you out of your chair, letting you clutch his hand tightly. You began to cry as he guided you out of the restaurant and to the valet. "Number 28!" He said to the attendant, holding out the ticket stub. "Please hurry!" He turned to you and kissed your cheek. "Where is the pain, love? Tell me where it hurts." As you pulled your hand back to gesture to your lower belly, you felt wetness trickle down your leg. You looked down to see a drop of blood travel down your leg. "Oh my god Lou!" You cried. Louis' eyes traveled down to where you were gesturing and his face went pale. "Shit." He mumbled. "We need that car right now!" He yelled to the valet.
"You're gonna be okay, babe." He said, taking your face in his hands. Soon a second valet pulled up in your car and it took only a few seconds for Louis to get you safely in the car and speeding away. As he drove quickly through the town, you realized you were probably staining the interior. "Lou I'm gonna ruin your car." You said. He let out a pitiful laugh. "That is the least of my worries right now babe." In a few minutes he pulled up to the emergency room entrance and quickly ushered you inside. After quickly explaining the situation to the attendant, you sat nearby. You heard her say the word "miscarriage". That was when it hit you. There was no other option. By the time you got into the room and the doctors were arranging the tests, you had accepted that you would never get to hold your baby, or see Louis kiss her tiny forehead. Louis sat at the foot of your bed while the nurses left you alone for a few minutes.
"Lou." You murmured. "She's gone." He looked at you with tear-filled eyes. He gulped as he crawled closer to you. "I know, love. I know. She's in a better place. I'm so sorry." He left a gentle kiss on your forehead as you curled up beside him, your shoulders shaking as you sobbed.
Liam:
This was going to be the hardest sentence you would ever say. The hardest phone call you would ever make. Your hands shook so much that you had to redial your husband three times before getting his number right. The house was quiet and eerie. Gone were your fantasies of seeing Liam's face when he got back from tour, seeing him beam at your extremely round belly and your pregnant glow. Or getting to hear the sound of little feet padding around your house, or picking out a name. After a couple of rings, his voice echoed through the phone. "Babe! Hey!" He said cheerfully. "How's my favorite girl?" You shut your eyes, hating to have to ruin his night. You knew this would tear him apart, but you couldn't not tell him. "I'm okay." You said shakily. "H-how are you?" Liam paused before responding. "Well...uh we just finished an insane gig. The crowd was so loud. But you don't sound okay. Are you sure you're alright?" You sighed and decided there was no going back. "Well, I... I had the appointment today. The ultrasound." You were in the kitchen, somewhat soothed by the hum of the appliances, the only other sound in your somber house. "Oh! That's right!" Liam responded. "So, how's our little guy doing?" Your throat suddenly went dry. You couldn't say anything. "Y/N? Hello?" Liam asked. "You still there?" "Yeah." You responded with a sniffle. "Liam I need to tell you something." He paused. "Okay." He said. "Gimme a minute." The background noise then grew much quieter. You assumed he went into a separate room. "What's going on, Y/N? Are you okay?" He asked gravely. You sniffled. "I'm fine, but our...our baby's not." The line went quiet. "What?" Liam said after a bit of silence. "What's happened?" You let out a sob. "Liam I'm so sorry. I...I lost the baby." You couldn't help but weep. It was the first time that you had said it out loud, the first time you admitted that it had actually happened. "Oh Y/N." Liam responded. "Please don't cry. Hey, it's okay." "Okay?!" You repeated. "It's not okay! I failed as a mother! We're not going to be parents, it's definitely not okay!" Liam paused, letting out a sigh. "Y/N stop. You did not fail as a mother, okay? Just please, it'll be alright. We're about to arrive at the airport anyways. I'll catch the next plane to London and I can be there within the next twelve hours." "No Liam you don't have to-" "Yes. Yes I do. I love you babe. Everything will be alright, I can promise it." You peered around at the house, hating that Liam had to come home in such miserable circumstances. "I love you, Y/N. I'll see you soon, okay?"
Zayn:
"Y/N! Y/N!" Zayn whispered harshly, shaking your shoulders. It was nearly four in the morning, and it was one of the first times that you were recently getting actual sleep, since the pregnancy was already making you exhausted. You fluttered your eyes open and groaned. "Whatttt?" You said, fatigue still making your eyelids droop. "You're not supposed to have your period...are you?" Zayn whispered. Your eyes flew open and you sat directly up. "What?" You said as you stared at your husband, whose eyes were wide and scared. He looked down at your lap as you pulled the heavy comforter off to follow his gaze. Bright crimson blood covered your entire lower body and half of the white bed sheets. "Shit!" You hissed, fleeing to the nearby bathroom. You stripped off your panties and sat on the toilet as the blood continued to drip down your inner thighs. Your porcelain white bathroom floor was now spotted with drips of blood, trailing from the bed. You shut your eyes as your head fell to your thighs. You let out a sob, knowing exactly what this meant. The baby that you two had worked so hard for was gone. "Oh babe." You heard Zayn say from the door. He opened the closet door and pulled out a towel, setting it on the tile below you. "Come here." He said calmly. You lifted your head and sniffled as he gently held your waist and lifted you up and set you on the ground. He set you between his legs, and you leaned back, your back resting on his chest. He curled his arms around you and held you tightly. You leaned your head onto his arm and sobbed into him as he rocked you gently. He held you close and kissed the top of your head. "It's okay baby, it's okay." He murmured to you, his arms wrapped around your front. "I'm s-so sorry Zayn." You croaked. He shushed you and kissed your cheek. "No, Y/N, don't be." He said soothingly. "You didn't do anything wrong, okay? You didn't do anything wrong." While Zayn kept repeating those words as he sat with you curled up into him, you couldn't help but not believe them.
