016. A Magician
She presses her fingertips against the dusty, glass mirror and traces her finger across it. She stops at a tiny crack branching from the top right corner of the glass, takes her hand back, and rubs her fingers together to rid of the dust.
She takes a step back and inspects the old mirror.
She can't believe she hadn't noticed it before; ten years of being held up in this attic and she thought she knew the room like the back of her hand. The mirror was even framed in shining silver and glimmering bits of gold like it was the most obvious thing in this attic. To be honest, it was.
She thinks she hadn't noticed it because it hid in a corner of the attic that she'd barely even acknowledged. Not to mention, a seemingly clean cloth grips the corner of the frame and droops to the floor. The mirror could have been covered previously that she couldn't have taken notice.
"Oh..." She smiles at her reflection in the mirror. A sorrowful smile. "I haven't changed the slightest in ten years, have I?" She touches a hand to her cheek and slowly drops her arm. "It's been forever since I'd last seen myself... I guess it's just you and me, huh?"
She approaches her reflection and places her hand against the glass. It was like there was another person beside her with this reflection of a faux hand on hers. She drops her head and shuts her eyes closed.
Tears fall from her eyes. "Everything will be fine..." She weeps. "Everything..." she sniffs, "will be fine! I'm fine! I'm... fine..."
She wipes the tears away, but they keep coming back.
Suddenly, she feels a warmth spread to her hand on the mirror. She raises her head and, in the mirror, she sees someone there. Someone who wasn't herself.
A boy smiles at her with his hand pressed against her own. He has the same blue eyes as her, but his look like glass, the same blond hair as her but his was spiked and tied in a small ponytail.
He smiles. "Everything will be fine."
"I-" She quickly pulls her hand back in a panic. "Wh-who are you? A-and what are you doing in the mirror?"
"I'm a magician made just for you. I'm here to grant all your wishes," he says with a bow.
"Grant all my wishes...?" A frown falls on the girl's face and she makes an expression as if she's about to cry. "I have no wishes to ask you to grant, I'm humbly sorry."
Tears stream down her cheeks and the magician, concerned, takes a step closer to his side of the mirror.
"No wishes to grant? Even if you're here in this attic? Even if you're given little to no food each day?"
"Those things don't bother me," she laughs through her sadness. "But... well, perhaps there's one thing."
"Whatever you wish."
She slowly walks toward the mirror and says softly, "... One powerful thing that I pray your magic alone will be able to grant..." She turns around on her back to gently lean on the mirror.
"I wish for a friend." She whips her head around and curiously stares at him. "Do you think you can grant me that?"
"Of course. But before I grant your wish, you must do something for me."
"What is it?"
He presses both his hands against the mirror and she does the same. His warmth spreads to her fingertips once more and she looks back up at him for any further instructions.
"Now close your eyes."
She does as told.
After a moment of silence has passed, she hears his soft voice whisper, "Tell me, what's your name?"
"Rin."
"Well, Rin, my name is Len."
To this, her eyes flutter open and they meet his smiling expression that she, too, smiles as well.
