Chapter 28: Settling In

Levi's POV

Kenny Ackerman has been confirmed dead for over eight months. The feeling of knowing he's dead has been nothing but relief. So why can't I sleep properly? Every night, I would leave my bed and walk around the house. I'll make myself a cup of tea with the kitchen light on. I'll wait until I'm done, and wash the cup before walking into Zayne's nursery.

I'll always kiss his forehead and tuck him into bed. I'll always make sure that he'll wakes up with his favorite stuffed bear and make sure the nightlight is always on. I'll never close the door fully because if something happens to him, I have to be ready to run to him as quickly as possible. Once I spend a few minutes in his nursery, I'll walk back into the bedroom with Hanji.

Sometimes, I wish for her ability to fall into a deep sleep. I'll slip into bed without disturbing her. My arms would wrap around her, and she'd twitch in her sleep. I'll always hold her close, breathing in her scent and hearing her soft breathing, knowing she's still here and alive. Though I'm scared that one day, I'll wake up with no one by my side. That's my every night nightmare...

"Levi... wake up..." I opened my eyes to feel Hanji gripping my shirt tightly and see her staring into my eyes. A smile grew on her face as we just stared. "I'm hungry..."

"Go make breakfast then. I was sleeping."

"A little more than before, huh? What's going on, Levi? You know you can tell me. I'm your soon-to-be wife. Trust me."

I chuckled, running my fingers through her hair. "It's nothing, Hanji. Don't worry. It'll be okay. I promise, okay? Do we have any plans this afternoon? If not, I would like to spend my morning with you..."

Hanji laughs softly, shaking her head. "As much as I would love that, we have a son to take care of. And yes, we're going to the park together. Have a nice family picnic with a few kids the same age as Zayne. It's a mommy group."

"Mommy group? Just the moms?"

"They're bringing their husbands, don't worry." She smiles, pushing herself closer to my face until we're inches away. "We can have a few minutes alone before going to Zayne. How's that?"

"Fine by me." We kissed as we spiraled into this session of nothing but love.

Hanji was right: there were husbands with moms. On the other hand, I couldn't get along with them. They decided to bring their stash of beer, talking about other things that typical dads do. I wanted to be near Zayne, so I never left his side. Hanji was busy talking with the other moms, figuring out what would work well for Zayne, and what wouldn't. Soon, I was involved with the children. I didn't think we would have another child after Zayne but after this... I want another one.

We returned to the house, and as I was prepping dinner, Hanji walked up with a smile on her face. She wraps her arms around my waist, resting her chin on my shoulder. "Levi... how was it? The group, I mean."

"The dads sucked."

"I could tell. You didn't hang out with them."

"Hanji, can we talk about something?"

"Like what?"

"Kids." I turned around, looking up at Hanji, "Hanji, I want another kid."

She opened her mouth, but she smiled. "Great minds think alike. I was hoping to get pregnant again. Another kid. A sibling for Zayne."

"Hanji, I said we can have another kid. It's alright. Do you want to try tonight?"

"If you don't mind."

"I love you, Hanji. Words can't express how much I love you, other than the obvious words. So don't ever leave me, okay? Never leave me."

We kissed again, and Hanji whispers. "I'll never leave you, Levi. Do the same for me. Don't leave us again... not anymore."
