Chapter 26: Together Again
Levi's POV
Hanji was showering as I cradled Zayne in my arms. The last time I held him was when he could fit between my arms. Now, he's so much bigger. I couldn't help but smile at him. I've never smiled this much. The only exception was Hanji. Zayne's hair started to grow black. And his eyes... they were mine. He was my son... he was my son...
"Levi," Hanji's voice floated into my ear, "We need to put him to bed."
"Just a minute longer." I begged, "Please..."
Hanji chuckles, kissing my cheek. "Levi, it's past his bedtime. You don't want to take care of a cranky baby in the morning, do you? Come on. Put him to bed and we can spend some time together."
"The way you word it makes it sound so dirty."
"Maybe this is what you think I said," Hanji chuckles again, leading me to the nursery. "Time for bed, Zayne."
We tucked him into bed, and he whined. Hanji kept telling me that this is my fault because I didn't put him away earlier. But soon, we put Zayne to bed without any more fuss. Hanji and I spent some time together. She suggested we could have wine as we talked about our future. For once, I agreed.
Sharing the wine, I heard about how she was being harassed by her co-workers and Moblit trying to steal my spot. The way she broke down, I couldn't let Hanji go through this again.
"We can leave," I suggested, holding her hand tightly. "Finally do it. Go to a different city, a new police station to work in. You know, a fresh start."
"Oh, I do want to leave. Is that okay?"
"Of course. Let's leave as soon as possible. And of course, get married as quickly as possible."
Hanji raised an eyebrow, confused before she laughed. She leaned against the cushions of the couch, staring at me with a smile on her face. "Is this your way of proposing to me, Levi? I was expecting something different."
"In a flashy way where I have to hold up a sign to ask you to marry me?"
"No, not like that. That's asking people to prom. I thought you would have a ring, take me to a nice dinner, propose to me at a restaurant or somewhere beautiful. That or somewhere that holds meaning to the two of us. That's what I was expecting. But I like the unexpectedness of this."
"So... will you marry me?"
"Of course, I will..."
We kissed on the lips, putting our glasses of wine to the side as we made out on the couch. Soon, we won't be able to do this. When Zayne gets older, we can't keep doing it whenever we want. We'll have to do it behind closed doors. But right now, we don't need to worry about anything else. After all, I'm home with my family.
