Chapter 23: Grief
Levi's POV
Time has run out. I had to take Hanji to the hospital as she was giving birth. When I wanted to find my uncle as quickly as possible, now I have more people to protect. Only one is prone to anything if he's taken away from us... and I don't want to lose a son to a monster like my uncle. Hanji would go insane if our son goes missing one day. I don't think I could hold myself together if something happened to either of them. May it be my son, Hanji, or both, I don't think I could see the light in humanity anymore.
I held her hand as she gave birth. I listened to her painful cries. I loathe the sound of it. She's in pain, and I can't do anything but hold her hand and whisper for her to be strong. If I could take some of her pain, I would. Even if it were a sliver, I would. Anything for her not to cry like that.
Hours passed, and there he was... a crying, loud, screeching blob. To think I helped conceive that for Hanji's protection... that's impossible to believe. The nurses took care of the baby, leaving me with Hanji as she gathered herself. She wanted to speak, but I didn't allow her to. She needed to rest and get her energy up as much as she could.
"Not without holding our son..." she murmurs, managing a smirk. "I don't want to sleep without holding our son at least once."
With a heavy sigh, I nodded my head and smiled. "Fine. But you need to sleep afterward."
"I know..."
Once the nurses cleaned him up, it was time for Hanji to hold him. When I saw her holding him in her arms, it clicked. The image of her being a little girl holding a baby doll popped into my head. We used to play around, and sometimes, we did play with baby dolls, pretending to be mommies and daddies. She always wanted to play with the other girls, but of course, they bullied Hanji. Whenever Hanji wanted to do something, I always played with her.
Hanji kissed gently on the infant's forehead, smiling softly. "He's so beautiful... to have the slightest idea that I was carrying him around in my uterus... I could never think otherwise." Hanji kisses his forehead again, "I think he has his father's eyes..."
"Good. If my uncle comes around, he'll know that's my son. Even if he doesn't believe it, I'll do a DNA test." I leaned close to Hanji, seeing our son calming down from his screams. "Even if it was for your protection, our son is beautiful thanks to you."
We waited for a few minutes before I suggested taking the baby away to allow her to sleep. Hanji wanted to beg for her to keep him close, but exhaustion wore out her adrenaline. I spent a few minutes with our son before he had to be sent away to be cared for as Hanji rested. I was allowed to watch our son in the baby room. I was afraid that I'd lose him.
The second I was standing there, I saw them wheel our son into the room with the other babies. He was so calm and quiet. I stood there like some creep, but I was glad he was safe. Hanji's safe. They're both safe.
"So he finally came..." I froze when that voice came through my ears. "I thought he came a bit late..."
"Leave them alone," I growled under my breath. "What more do you want?"
"When will you ever learn? You could never catch me and... oh, what did you call it? 'Bring me to justice?' I would love to see that. As you know, there's only one way to do that."
"I hope you rot in jail for the rest of your life, Kenny. I want you to rot in jail even if you're my uncle. I'll do whatever I can to do so."
Kenny sighed, walking up to the window that faced the babies. He points in the general direction of my son with a shitty grin. "That's him, huh? Levi, as I said, you never learn. What happened when you tried to send me to jail? Don't you remember what happened? No? Should I help you remember what happened on that day?"
"Shut up."
"Stay out of my way, Levi. Before that boy of yours becomes mine."
"I'll kill you before that happens."
"I hope it's a killing shot and not a wounding one, Levi. Because the second you wound me, I'll be plotting ways to make you regret it. Perhaps your lover's corpse is torn to shreds with your son watching. Or maybe I'll train him to do that to his mother-."
"Enough." It took all my strength to not strangle him right there and now. I could arrest him now, but I'm afraid his lackeys are hidden in plain view. If something happens to their boss, it may mean death for my loved ones. "Shut up."
"Then kill me before I kill them."
I shut my eyes tightly as I kept my hands from swinging across his face. He's right... if I truly want to keep them safe forever, I have to kill him. But not here. Not in front of my son and everyone's babies. I won't traumatize them. It's not just that. We're in a hospital. Doctors and nurses will do everything they can to save Kenny's life. If he survives, he'll kill Hanji and our son. Even so, I'll be arrested on the spot for a murder. Again, his lackeys might do something in Kenny's name. If not, I might never see my son again.
"Make your choice, runt."
Kenny walks away, leaving me alone in front of the window. I put them in danger... I don't want anything else to happen to them. It's time for me to discard every belief in justice. I'll hunt him down. I won't return until he's dead. Hanji, I'll say goodbye to you and our son, but I can't tell you where I'm going. Not until it's safe. I want to see our son again. Before he gets too old, I'll kill Kenny and return to you.
"I promise, Hanji, I'll be back. This is the last promise I'll uphold until we're finally together again."
