Chapter 10: Moved On
3 more months passed, and Joey's mind was easily kept occupied with the booming business he was receiving. Ever since the opening of his cafe, he'd been busy getting the hang of running it. However, now he was settling in nicely to his new life and job, doing what he dreamed he'd do.
Today was Saturday, and they were getting ready for tonight. Last month he'd implimented an open-mic night of his own, but picked Saturday nights, not wanting to compete against Nessa for Friday's. His old boss had been nothing but nice to him, and she was honestly happy for him when he told her why he was quitting.
Right now, he was working on a new drink, something he wanted to offer that no one else was. Something that would set his store apart from the rest.
"Hey, Macy! Come taste this!" he called out, wanting someone else's opinion on it.
In seconds, his blonde friend was next to him, warily picking up the drink he made.
"Is this going to kill my tastebuds, or am I actually going to like it?" she questioned, raising a brow at him suspiciously.
"I guess we'll find out soon enough," he shrugged.
Closing her eyes as if she was saying a prayer, she sipped the hot coffee, her eyes instantly widening the moment the liquid hit her tongue.
"Well..."
"Oh my God, Joey! This is amazing! You are totally going to steal people's customers with this!" she raved. "What's in it?"
"I'll tell you that once I come up with a name for it. Until then, we'll keep this secret brew between us."
With that goal checked off the list, Joey took a seat, glancing up to the tv when he saw Dua Lipa on the screen sitting across from Ellen DeGeneres. Since the cafe was actually slightly empty for once, he grabbed the remote and unmuted it, drawn to the interview simply because of the possibility of one specific person being mentioned.
Even after six months, he still felt nothing but affection for her. A part of him wondered if he loved her anymore, while the other was terrified he didn't. He'd find himself up at night, scouring the internet for any videos of her singing, and when he found one, he'd play it on repeat until he could fall asleep. Lately, he hadn't been doing that, but it didn't mean he didn't still miss her.
"So, Dua, now that your tour is over, tell us what fun things happened on that tour bus that won't get my show censored," Ellen said, laughing as the crowd joined in.
"Well," she began. "There are many, many, many stories and juicy details I could share, but none of them won't get you censored," she joked.
A minute later of Dua giving a real answer to the question, Ellen asked her a new one.
"What about Nevada Jones?" she asked. "There were a lot of pictures of you two hanging out last weekend. Seems like you both are real pals now."
Nodding her head, she agreed.
"Yeah, yeah, I'd say we are. Nevada is one of those people that you just want to keep around you, and her talent is out of this world. I mean, she made me nervous to go after her some nights because she would just kill it. I'm so happy she's getting the recognition she's deserves and I already miss her."
"Will she be joining you on the second half of your tour?"
"Well, the door is always open to her, but she told me she had another opportunity she wanted to take so I wish her all the best with that."
Turning the tv back to mute, Joey headed upstairs. Because the building was two-story, he decided to move into the loft upstairs. As the owner, most of his time would be spent at the shop, so he figured it best to live there as well. In moments like these, he was glad he did because he was able to escape when he needed to.
The pain he felt realizing she really had moved on and was off on another project was so sharp and fresh, but he was happy for her. Somehow, in the past six months, they had both gone from having a dream, to living it, and that was something most people never got to do.
Yet the pain in his chest proved one thing. Nevada Jones still held his heart.
