Spencer and Toby Eloped?
For those of you Spoby shippers who may or may not have heard, Hanna spilled the beans to Mona in "The Perfectionists" That Spencer and Toby had run off and eloped with out telling a soul. So I decided to write a little one shot about their elopement and their friends reactions. I'll probably be writing a sequel to it shortly.
"Do you think I'm packing too much?" Spencer asked as she zipped up her third suitcase.
"I've learned not to answer those types of questions" Toby quipped.
"We're going to Europe for a whole month Toby," Spencer complained "you don't want me to run out of clothes do you?"
A devilish smile crossed Toby's face and Spencer balled up a pair of panties that hadn't made it into the suitcase and threw them at him.
"I also know that your father raised the credit limit on both your credit cards so you can probably afford to leave some room for your acquisitions."
"Well you can't be serious with that duffel bag, you're gonna need more than that."
"I pack light, I always have." Toby teased.
"I bet you forgot something." Spencer shot back.
"Nope, and even if I did, there's nothing I need that I won't be able to get wherever we go."
"Do you think I forgot something?" Spencer asked double checking her list. "I packed everything on the list."
"Then I'm sure you have everything" Toby said grabbing the notepad, knowing Spencer would unpack and repack all three suitcases if she wasn't positive that she'd packed everything.
Toby scanned the list three times before speaking
"You forgot to put birth control on your list." He said handing the notepad back to her. When Spencer didn't dart over to the night stand where she kept the package of pills she took religiously, Toby knew it hadn't been an error.
"Spencer" Toby drew out her name accusatorially.
Spencer bit her lip before speaking.
"We talked about me going off my birth control..."
"And we agreed we would wait until we were married." Toby reminded her.
"You and my father agreed, I didn't get much of a say." She huffed "were basically married. How is "living in sin" ok but being pregnant out of wedlock not."
"You know how your parents feel about this. How I feel about this."
"You didn't have a problem last night"
"This isn't about sex" Toby huffed "this is about the proper way to bring a child into the world."
"Well I just thought this condo seemed a little big and empty and maybe a baby would make it feel homier."
"When we get back from our trip, maybe we'll get a puppy."
"I don't want a puppy" Spencer grumbled as Toby's phone rang "I want a baby"
"Well I'm going out of town, and I was hoping to see the site before I left" Toby told whomever was on the phone "I can be there in less than hour"
Toby pulled his sneakers on as he hung up the phone.
"I gotta go look at this site for work, shouldn't take long."
"Toby, how long are you gonna keep doing this?"
"Doing what?" Toby asked with his most innocent face.
"Pretending you're going to work, when really you're going to look at a plot of land for our new house."
"How'd you...."
"You can't keep things from me, I always find out."
"I just wanted to find the perfect spot, you know? I had it perfect. The house, the land, it was...."
"Perfect, I know" Spencer finished.
After they had uncovered Alex, Toby and Spencer had tried living in the house Toby had built but soon realized it would never be right there. Toby and Spencer were haunted by ghosts of Yvonne and Alex. Soon after they sold the house and he and Spencer moved into a condo.
"How many places have you looked at?" Spencer asked breaking the silence.
"I've lost count" Toby said honestly.
"Can I come with you?" Spencer offered.
"Of course you can" Toby reaches out a hand and they walked to the car.
"So tell me about the house." Spencer said as Toby pulled out of the parking lot.
"It has a lot of potential" Toby said.
"You told me once that 'has a lot of potential' was code for 'requires a lot of work'"
"Well that's true too but I can do most of it myself"
"Mmmh"
Toby pulled up to a driveway that was barely a drive way, opening the metal fence before getting back in the car. The path stretched out to a house back away from the road. An old man stood on the porch, waiting for them.
"Tobias, finally got your girl out here?" The old man said.
"Yes, Mr. Weaver, this is Spencer."
"Nice to finally meet you Spencer."
"Finally?" Spencer inquired.
"This is about the third time Toby has asked to take a look at the place."
"You played me" Spencer asked cocking her head to the side.
"Little bit" Toby smirked.
Mr. Weaver showed them around the house mostly for Spencer's benefit. Toby would periodically interject his plan on updating the rooms as they went. Finally they got to the last room. It was in the back corner of the house, modest sized with a window seat overlooking a large expanse of land. Spencer was marveling at the view when she noticed tears streaming down Mr. Weaver's cheeks.
"Mr. Weaver are you alright?" Spencer asked worrying.
"Yes, dear" he said wiping his eyes with a handkerchief "just remembering. The happiest times of my life, the best years of my marriage were spent mostly in this room."
Spencer and Toby waited for him to go on.
"When I bought the house, I thought it would be my office. Gwen had a different idea" he smiled "as wives often do" he said looking to Toby.
"We spent our first night in the house in this room, the full moon illuminating every wall because we hadn't even bought curtains yet. Nine months later we brought home our son Jacob, made it his nursery. Gwen would rock him in the rocking chair and I'd strum my guitar. It wasn't much I guess..."
"But you were happy" Spencer finished.
"Indeed little lady" he said "I hoped Jacob would have a family of his own in this house some day but he met the nicest young man out in California, their life is there" he pulled out his wallet "they just adopted two little girls Sherri and Elizabeth, look at those faces. So grandpas packing up his guitar and cargo shorts and moving to California to be with them. The only matter now is selling this house."
"What do you think?" Toby asked Spencer.
"It's a lot of work Tobes" Spencer said as her brain rifled through the list of plans he had.
"It's something we could do together" Toby said "it's not all tearing and building. There will be painting and decorating too."
"Did I mention that it's within walking distance to the lake?" Mr. Weaver added.
Spencer looked at Toby thoughtfully.
"This is the house you want isn't it?"
"I want you to be happy." Toby answered.
"A house is nice but I need more than a house to be happy." Spencer whined.
"Mr. Weaver, I believe you just sold your house." Toby said with a smile. The two men shook hands and called their lawyers to hammer out the details.
When Spencer and Toby got back to the condo, Spencer threw herself into his arms.
"Make love to me" Spencer whimpered between kisses. When Toby didn't pick her up and carry her to the bedroom, Spencer grabbed his shirt and dragged him into the bedroom pulling him down on top of her. "Please"
"Come on Toby ravish me" Spencer whined when he still seemed unwilling.
"Marry me....today" Toby whispered in her ear "make me the happiest man in the world. I promise I'll spend hours ravishing every inch of you."
"We will get married Toby, we will" Spencer began as she had before with all the reasons they had to wait.
"I'm not making love to you again, until we're married."
"That's not fair"
"Aria and Ezra are on a year long book tour. Hanna and Caleb haven't left New York in months, and Emily and Alison are getting a divorce and Ali just moved out to bumfuck, Washington."
"Beacon Heights, Oregon"
"Yeah, wherever, the point is the likelihood we're going to get everyone here for a wedding is highly unlikely. A marriage license and a small ceremony is all I'm asking for."
Spencer stripped off her clothes to taunt Toby.
"No sex until we're married?" Spencer asked teasingly.
"No" Toby said firmly.
Spencer took Toby's hand pushing two fingers into her core.
"So wet" Spencer said as she slipped his hand in and out. Spencer began rubbing the growing bulge in Toby's pants. "How important is being married to you now?"
Toby pulled his hand from Spencer's center, wiping her wetness off on his pants before pulling Spencer onto his lap. Her naked body against his clothed body felt awkward to Spencer and she felt self conscious about being naked.
"I want to get you pregnant Spencer" Toby said seriously "I desperately want a family with you."
"But we have to be married" Spencer grumbled.
Toby sighed trying to think about how to explain it to her.
"My father didn't believe in giving me "the talk", he said it would make me think it was okay to be doing it." Toby began "my mother though knew how important it was. When she gave me "the talk" she made me promise that id wait until I was in love, and that she'd prefer I wait until I was married. She also said I better not get a girl pregnant before I married her."
Toby let Spencer mull over what he said. Spencer knew Toby hadn't exactly been able to keep his promises.
"When my father found out you and I were having sex, he gave me the talk. I told him about the talk with my mother. He said the same thing, not to get a girl pregnant until we were married."
Spencer sat contemplating his words.
"It's that important to you that we be married?"
"It is"
Spencer stood from Toby's lap and pulled her clothes back on. She reached for her cell phone and dialed a number. Toby listened as Spencer talked to whoever was on the other line.
"Pastor Wilson has an opening at 2 this afternoon. Call your dad, I'll call my parents, we can pick up the marriage certificate at the town hall and be married this afternoon."
To Spencer and Toby's surprise, their parents were ecstatic at the impromptu nuptials, if not a bit suspicious. Spencer and Toby assured them there wasn't a baby already on the way.
As a wedding gift, the Hastings offered an all expenses paid night at any hotel they wanted for their wedding night. After a short discussion they had decided what they wanted. Room 215 at the Edgewood Motor Court.
They kissed and undressed each other both eager to make love as man and wife for the first time.
"You're my husband" Spencer said in awe.
"You're my wife" Toby replied as a devilish smile came to his lips.
"Top or bottom?"
New York City
"Hey Hanna?" Caleb called to his wife in the kitchen. Hanna walked into Caleb's office sifting through mail. "I was thinking we should take the baby and maybe go on a trip"
"Are you fucking kidding me?" Hanna yelled startling Caleb.
"I was just thinking Myrtle Beach or something, not anything crazy."
"No fucking way!" Hanna yelled again. Caleb turned to see Hanna standing in the office staring at a piece of mail.
"Hanna?!" Caleb yelled to get her attention.
Hanna looked up before holding her hand up as she began reading.
"You are cordially invited to a wedding reception to celebrate the marriage of Toby Cavanaugh and Spencer Hastings-Cavanaugh. Gifts are unnecessary. Simply your presence requested."
Hanna brought the invite over to Caleb so he could see it for himself.
"No fucking way" Caleb breathed echoing Hanna's thought, "she's pregnant"
"No" Hanna said smacking him "she just finished law school, she wouldn't be that stupid."
"They got married without telling anyone and they are going on that European vacation. She's gonna come back with a big pregnant belly and try to convince everyone she got pregnant on the vacation."
Hanna was about to point out that they had eloped without being pregnant but was interrupted by her phone ringing.
"Hey Em" Hanna answered.
"Did you see this shit?!" Emily's voice rushed through the speaker.
"Spencer and Toby's invite? Yeah we were just talking about it."
"They got married in Rosewood and didn't even invite me."
"They didn't invite anyone Emily, they eloped, that's what eloped means."
"Yeah and what's that about. Spencer has been planning a big elaborate wedding since she was six."
"Yes but she also thought she was gonna marry Justin Timberlake" Hanna looked at Caleb before speaking "you don't think Toby could have been wrong? About Spencer, About the Spencer's?"
"I can't even think about that" Emily breathed
"Toby was sure" Caleb said loud enough for Emily to hear through the phone. She had enough on her plate without worrying Spencer's evil twin was lurking in the shadows.
"She was really convincing" Hanna mumbled "but Toby promised he was sure and we were safe" Hanna added when Caleb shot a glare at her."
"It hurts that I wasn't invited" Emily said "I was their best friend first, both of them, they wouldn't even be together if it wasn't for me."
"They know how busy we all are" Hanna said "and with the divorce..."
"I know....." Emily said
After saying her goodbyes to Hanna, Emily called Ali.
"Did you get an invitation from Spencer?" Emily blurted our when Ali answered the phone.
"Well hello to you too" Ali quipped at her bluntness.
"Sorry, hello Ali, did you get an invite?"
"I hadn't opened it yet" Ali sighed as Emily heard the sound of ripping paper.
"Spencer and Toby got married?"
"They eloped"
"And she's due when?"
"She's not pregnant, well actually I don't know that for sure but"
"Peter And Senator Veronica Hastings daughter, their pride and joy, decides to get married and they choose a quickie elopement. She's totally pregnant. Cavanaugh never could keep it in his pants."
"Are you coming? To the party?"
"I should be able to swing it, it'll give me an opportunity to spend time with the girls as well"
"The girls isn't enough motivation for a visit?"
"You know that's not what I meant. You're twisting my words."
"You taught me how" Emily said before hanging up.
Los Angeles
"Aria, honey, are we expecting any invitations?" Ezra asked as he held up a pink envelope that was so obviously an invitation.
"No but we have more than enough friends, it's probably a birthday party or something" Aria said
"I just can't think who it would be from"
"Well whatever you do don't open it and find out" Aria teased sitting in his lap as he began opening it.
"It's addressed to both of us" Ezra said pulling out the card.
"Wedding reception?" Ezra asked
"Marriage?" Aria questioned
"They eloped?" Ezra wondered.
"Seems like it" Aria said "but why?"
"My guess is they wanted to be married."
"Ass" Aria said ruffling his hair "I just mean it's so sudden. They were at our Philly book signing a month ago and they didn't say anything. Last time I even asked her about marriage she said she didn't plan on marrying Toby for awhile because it didn't feel right because of Yvonne."
"She may be pregnant. That changes things. Trust me I know."
