Chapter 7

A few days had passed since Kayla was accepted into the Thunder Legion. Now she was sitting quietly at the bar table with a glass of water in front of her. Laxus had told them to take the day off due to the fact that they had been taking a job a day since Kayla joined them and it was about time for a break.

Her glove was off, exposing the seal that was on her forearm. She traced over it with her finger as she let out a sigh. She hadn't heard from any of her friends since they separated that stormy night. She wasn't even sure if they were alive. She knew that thinking those thoughts were the worst case scenario, but just the fact that she had't talked to them in a while made her worried.

"That's a peculiar mark." Freed said as he walked up to Kayla, causing the blonde to slap her hand over the seal and turn to look at Freed.

"Oh, yeah, it's just a...mark." Kayla said, looking at Freed who still had a neutral look on is face. "Nothing really special." Wow. That was so convincing. She thought to herself. Kayla grabbed the black material that went under her glove before Freed grabbed her arm, causing Kayla's breath to get stuck in her throat and look at him.

"It looks more like a rune seal to me."

A strike of fear went through Kayla's heart. The one person who has extensive knowledge on rune magic saw her seal. "It's nothing, really." She eventually said before she pulled her arm from his grip and quickly put her glove back on.

Freed's eyes narrowed the slightest bit, but Kayla was able to catch it, it was obvious to her that he didn't believe her.

"If you'll excuse me, I'm going on a walk." Sliding off the bar seat, Kayla headed out of the guild hall and took a deep breath. Deep breath Kayla. He couldn't of had enough time to read the entire rune... but he probably suspects something. Why did I have to be so obvious! she asked herself, cursing under her breath. As she walked through the town, she found herself walking along the vendor alley, the same one she had walked through on her first visit to the town. She walked past a magazine stand and stopped in her tracks.

Sorcerer's Weekly had released their newest issue, though it wasn't the picture of Mirajane on the cover that caught her attention. She walked towards the stand and grabbed one, starring at one of the side articles in horror.

Cause for Concern?
Rumors that Death Storm's Fearsome Five are on the run?
More on pg. 13.

It seemed that word had already spread about her escape, well, not her specifically but her group. Once more rumors arise and more people start to talk, wizards from different guilds would definitely going to be looking for her and the others. And it would only be a matter of time before she was found out along with the others and thrown in jail— or killed on the spot.

"Are you going to buy that?" The seller asked, breaking Kayla out of her thoughts.

"Oh, yeah, sure." Kayla said distantly as she grabbed some jewels and placing them on the counter before walking away. She found a tree to sit under and started to read the article.

The rumors around Fiore have held talk about the Dark Guild, Death's Storm.
Whispers that the Dark Guild's Fearsome Five are on the run are finding the ears of normal citizens.
Most who have heard of this rumor fear for their lives, which is understandable due to the dangerous reputation each of the members hold, and the whispers of the chaos their magic can ensue.

Even if the rumors prove to be false, keep a vigilant eye out and report anyone that might match the descriptions of any of the following wizards:

Control Master: A wizard with magic that allows her to control and living being to do her bidding.

Medusa: A wizard who can petrify any wizard even without looking at them. Wizards who are petrified eventually fade to dust.

Tamer: A wizard who's Take Over magic allows them to use the souls of the ancient beasts known as Dragons

The Theif: A wizard who steals the magic of others. Once the magic is stolen, it can never be returned.

And the most dangerous,

Storm Bringer: A wizard with Storm Dragon Slayer magic. Known to level entire villages with a single roar, and to kill without remorse.

Keep an eye out for any wizard that might fit their description.

"You reading that trashy magazine?" Someone asked, and Kayla jumped and looked up to see Laxus looking down at her with his arms crossed over his chest. "You know it's all full of gossip and nothing in it is true, right? So why do you look like you've see a ghost?"

Kayla let the magazine rest in her lap. "I know... just this one article." She started, watching as Laxus swiped the magazine from her lap.

"The Fearsome Five?" He asked, looking at Kayla with a raised eyebrow. "They can't be all that dangerous if people don't even know what they look like." He scoffed, tossing the magazine back to Kayla. "The hide behind those pathetic nicknames. Only cowards act like that."

"I-I guess you're right." Kayla said.

"I can't have one of the Thunder Legion believing in that gossip. It might interfere with your performance on jobs. Got that?"

"Yes sir!" Kayla exclaimed.

"Good. Now come with me."

"Are we going on a mission today?" Kayla asked in slight confusion, he had said that today was a day off for them after all.

"No. You're a lightning mage, right? I've noticed that you only seem to use that one move. While it gets the job done most of the time, I don't want any one trick wizards on my team. So, I'm going to try to teach you some more spells, if you can even learn them, Newbie."

Kayla jumped up and puffed her cheeks in annoyance. "Try me."

Laxus grinned, "Come with me." He said as he started walking away.

Kayla grinned and followed after him leaving the magazine laying face up on the ground, the article she had just read open until a breeze blew past and closed it.

***

The two of them had gotten to the Guild's training ground, some attack dummies and targets placed for those who wished to train by themselves. Kayla was standing in front of Laxus, looking up to be able to look him in the eyes. His expression was serious and his arms were crossed over his chest.

"Alright, you'd better listen closely because I'm not going to repeat anything." Laxus started. "Just having me teach this to you is a luxury, and if you weren't part of the Thunder Legion, I wouldn't even bother with you, got that? And don't think I'll be going easy on you."

Kayla nodded, not at all phased by what Laxus had just said, she had heard worse from people far more intimidating.

"The way you use your magic is precise, But when you only have one attack it leaves you at a disadvantage. Lightning is a destructive force—" he held his hand out and Kayla watched as it sparked dangerously "—and can mow down enemies by the dozens when used properly. I want you to attack me head on with your magic, full on, not using that little 'stun gun' spell."

"Are you sure?" Kayla asked.

Laxus gave her a cocky grin, "You're not strong enough to hurt me."

Kayla nodded, she got into a battle stance and outstretched her hands in front of her. Both of her hands started hopping with lightning before a beam was shot straight towards Laxus. Almost immediately he was gone and a fist made contact with Kayla's side, causing her to stumble to the side and keel over in pain.

"You're too slow." Laxus said, standing in the spot Kayla was standing in just moments ago. He looked down at her as she placed a hand over her side. "Give up?"

Kayla turned her head and looked at Laxus, her eyes blazing. "Give up? I thought we were just starting." She said as she straightened up, looking at Laxus with a toothy grin.

Laxus grinned, lightning hopping around him. "You'd better keep up."

The two trained for the rest of the day and well into the night when their lightning was the only source of light in the dark of the night. Kayla was hunched over with her hands on her knees as she caught her breath. Ever since the sun set, she had been practicing a spell called Lightning Body, where the wizard or more specifically a lightning mage transforms their body into pure lightning and is able to jump around at shocking speeds. She wasn't nearly as fast as Laxus but she had been able to successfully transform her body into lightning and move around.

"That's all for tonight." Laxus said, and Kayla looked up with surprise.

"What? I can still keep going!" She exclaimed, punching the air with fists surrounded by lightning.

"I can sense that your magic is running low. It's stupid of make me force you to practice anymore for the night. Go get some rest."

"But—" Kayla started, only to be silenced by a glare from Laxus. She let out a sigh, "Yes sir." She muttered.

"Good. Get some rest and come to the guild hall tomorrow afternoon." He turned and started walking away, leaving Kayla standing in the training grounds alone.

Looking up at the half moon shining above her, she turned and headed towards Fairy Hills, finally realizing how fatigued she truly felt. She was ready for a nice long rest.
