Chapter One: Escaping the Tower
Dream fluttered his eyes open. He wasn't in his fluffy, comfortable bed in his room, but on a rough mattress yet with a thick and warm blanket. He looked across the room, to his brother still asleep on his matching mattress and warm blanket as he was bruised and cut up.
The bright prince sat up, his face unharmed, yet it was still covered with dirty and smudges. He whined as he pulled out leaves and twigs from his usually beautiful and neat sun blonde curly hair. When curly hair gets messy, it can get really hellish to clean up.
The pale male looked out the prince-size window, looking at the forest that the tower shadowed. After so long of the tall trees towering over Dream, making him scared of the forest, the sun prince could finally lower over the forest in his new found tall princess tower.
Of course, Prince Dream was excited to be the perfect princess, waiting to be rescued. Looking down at his ripped and dirty clothes, he sighed. He was almost the perfect princess, waiting to be rescued.
The feminine prince walked to the room to look around. He opened the wardrobe, which was beautifully carved and decorated. He gasped with delight when he saw the beautiful dresses in the closet.
"Magnificent!" Dream exclaimed, awaking his brother from his sleep.
"Wha?!" Nightmare fell off his bed, looking at his brother. He watched as the sun prince pulled out a pink and gold dress, starting to spin around, holding it to his body to dance around.
"This is extraordinarily perfect!" Dream sang, dancing with his beautiful princess dress.
Nightmare stared at him, confused. The moon prince never liked changing in front of people, so he didn't want to have to change out of his ruined clothes.
Unlike his brother, Dream put the dress on the bed he woke up on and took of his ruined vest and shirt and leggings. He was left in just panties, which showed the tan splotches of skin on his back, right thigh, left foot and calf, right shoulder, and left hand and forearm he inherited from his mother. He had much more matching skin and skin splotches rather than his mother and brother, who had much more mitchmatched skin.
"Have some decency, Dream!" The dark prince pulled the red curtains closed to hide the family skin splotches from the world.
"It's just a perfect dress!" The smaller slid his dress on, dancing in the beautiful gown. He giggled and spun before opening the drawer, smiling when he saw all the accessories. "Oh my shooting stars! This is just phenomenal!"
Grabbing a pair of white stockings with yellow stars and golden and jewled hair pins, Dream jumped on the mattress. He pulled the stockings onto his legs, which looked highly provocative. He put the hair pins in, looking as pretty and princess-like he has always loved to.
"Oh, this has been the very best day of my entire life!" Dream sang, dancing around the room.
"Brother, this is horrible! We've been kidnapped!" Nightmare exclaimed.
"Shush and put on your dress!" The sun prince threw the purple and cyan dress for Nightmare at his brother.
"Dress?! No! I'm not some princess!" Nightmare huffed throwing his own beautiful dress down.
"No! Don't ruin it!" The blonde screamed, grabbing the elegant dress before it hit the floor.
Nightmare huffed, sitting on his bed and looking around.
Of course, his dark jacket was dulled out and ripped up. One of his black pant legs were ripped completely off and his knee was scraped and bruised.
"Put it on. You don't have anything nicer to wear." Dream holds it out for him to see the glorious dress.
It was long and skinny, in contrary to Dream's fluffy skirt. It was a dark purple that faded to a cyan at the bottom of the long gown. The top was connected to soft long sleeves. It wouldn't cover the dark splotch of skin that was on Nightmare's right shoulder, but no one really disliked the splotches besides Nightmare, who tells his brother to hide his "discolored" skin. The top had a big black crescent moon on his chest, which looked just glorious.
"No! I am not wearing that!" Nightmare objected.
"But it's glorious! Breath-taking! Spectacular!" Dream exclaimed, trying to get him to try on the beautiful dress.
"Fine!" The dark prince finally gave in to his bright brother, going to the corner to take off his vest and his jacket, his broken boots and his destroyed pants. He put on the dress, sighing as his body looked so small and feminine and so very fragile in dresses. Unlike Dream, the moon prince hated to be looking so beautiful, like a damsel in distress.
The male princess gasped, putting his hands together in front of his face. He was so surprised at how absolutely astonishing his dark brother looked.
"Accessories!" Dream squealed, jumping and clapping. The sun prince got some jewelry to add to Nightmare, smiling brightly. His stammering brother had no option but to let him force chokers around his neck and bracelets on his wrists and earrings into his ears and many hair accessories.
The taller sighed in relief as his brother stopped forcing him to accessories, starting to take off all of the gold and silver and jewels.
In response, the sun prince huffed and sat on his hard rock bed with his arms crossed. The dark male walked with his new gown touching the floor. He put some of the jewelry away, grabbing two pairs of long gloves. He handed his pouting sibling the golden gloves as he started to slip on his black velvet gloves, pulling the sleeves of his dress to cover his black gloves. He preferred to hide his discolored skin, forcing his brother to do the same.
The smaller prince sighed, pulling his long gloves on. It was so silky and soft, yet he hated gloves. He always thought his skin was beautiful. He felt like he wanted his future husband to think his skin was beautiful, because it didn't have a different texture. It was just a different color. His skin was soft as skin can get, so he felt like he should be able to show off his skin splotches.
The dark prince put on black stockings with dark purple crescents on it, already getting ready to escape. He started to braid his hair, so it would be easier to run in the forest.
"Can we open these curtains?!" The blonde male threw the red velvet curtains open, smiling at the warm sunshine on his showing skin.
"Yeah, no. Close them." Nightmare hissed, grabbing a book that he wanted to read in the dim room. He had to hide his true plans from his brother, as the sun prince would refuse to go along with it. As there was nothing else in the room to entertain Dream, he grabbed three book and left for the balcony that was right outside the prince-sized window.
The feminine prince closed the curtains, sitting on the small brick wall that wouldn't save anyone from falling to their doom. He opened his first book, ready to start waiting for his Prince Charming to come and save him. And his brother as well, after all.
"Don't worry, my prince," Dream quietly called out. "I'll be waiting for you! And I won't move at all!"
The trees shook and Dream could see a person. He motioned for the man to come over. After all, if it was his prince, he wanted him to come and save him like the damsel in distress he was.
He could tell that the male tried coming over, but someone called for him and he ran off.
"Don't go..." Dream whispered. "Please come back to save me..."
The night male listened as his little brother called out to some fairytale prince that would never come to rescue him. He sighed and pulled out the drawer with fabric. He had to start getting ready to get them out of there.
Nightmare laid the dark purple yet soft fabric he found, his ruined vest, his broken boots, and took off his dress, adding it to the floor. He got sewing equipment and snipped the scissors. This was the beginning of his new life.
~
"Dream! Come inside!" Nightmare called, pretty proud of what he's done.
Dream was halfway through his third book, starting to think his handsome knight wasn't going to come back. He sighed, putting a bookmark inside of his book and put it to the side. He looked back at the forest. He hoped the prince or knight or whoever would come back.
The prince couldn't see him well, but he was able to tell he was pale or he was wearing very shiny silver armor. He imagined his knight was an albino that was muscular and handsome. He imagined his knight was simply getting what was needed to climb up and save the blonde sun prince.
Of course, the knight may never come back. Maybe he didn't even see the prince, sitting with his beautiful dress. Dream just wished he could have climbed down and called for the knight to scoop him into his arms and carry him into his happily ever after.
The sun prince walked past the red curtains, gasping in shock as he saw what his brother had done.
Standing proudly in the small ray of sun let in by the opened curtains was the prince of the night, his long skirt being cut off of the top of the dress and sewed and cut up into pants and his, now, shirt's sleeves were sewn to cover his shoulder and were rolled up and sewn to make it just above his elbow. The black gloves still covered what skin would have shown as they made it much past his elbows. He was wearing a dark purple vest that was identical to his ruined one. He even used his old buttons to hold it together stylishly. His boots had been fixed with the black goop he could summon, so he had his boots back fixed, black, edgier, and better than ever.
The sun prince stared, covering his mouth in surprise. He thought his brother looked so beautiful in the dress when it was perfectly feminine way it was originally sewn to be.
"What do you think? Amazing, huh?" Nightmare threw his simple braid over his shoulder as his brother processed his new outfit
It seemed tears filled the eyes of the prince of the sun as he stared at him. "Why would you do this? Your dress was so beautiful..."
"What..?" Nightmare's face dropped. "I mean, I made it better!"
"You ruined it..." Dream pulled his side of the room's curtain open so his half of the room was brightened.
"Ruined it?!" Nightmare groaned and started getting what he needed to get them out of the tower.
The smaller hated what Nightmare had done. He finished what was left on his bed as Nightmare found a rope.
It was easily the fifty feet they were in the air. It could easily wrap around the top of the window, which held a hung flower vase. Easily, it could rescue them and get them out of this tower.
The dark prince didn't know how to get his brother down the rope, but he had to find a way to get the rope so he could climb down it.
Nightmare stepped over the bottom of the window, ducking so he doesn't trip or get hurt. He stands there, the sun shining on his face. As he looked around, ideas flooded his mind and a smirk grew on his lips.
Collecting things from around the room, the prince of the night knew how to start his work. He was the inventive one in the duo. Everyone loved the art Dream could do, but they didn't know how Nightmare could be just as creative, in a different way. It may not be beautiful as Dream liked to make, but it was important as Nightmare needed to save them both.
Dream cared about beauty.
Nightmare cared about importance.
~
The fiery sun began to set as the dark prince finished his hard work. He attached a huge basket to one side of the rope. He tested it, and it could and would hold two Dreams at once. It was definitely strong enough.
The moon prince yawned, as it was a long day ahead of him and his bright and sunny brother. He pulled the basket up and tied the other end of the rope to the middle of the curtain rail. He climbed into the room and closed the curtains, noticing how his brother lit a few candles.
In one golden-gloved hand, the sun prince held a golden hand-candleholder, and in the other, his astronomy book. His pale face was illuminated with the warm glow of the flame. His shining golden eyes looked up when he saw how the royal room was darkened suddenly.
The older twin took off his vest and his boots. He stripped himself of his shirt and pants and his gloves. He took off all accessories except the moon necklace he has had ever since he was born.
Grabbing the simple midnight purple nightgown in the closet, Nightmare pulled it onto his body and covered his arms with the long sleeves the gown came with.
"Good night, Dream." Nightmare laid on his bed, snapping and slight ice froze on the wicks of every candle in the room.
The sun prince huffed and set the wick of the candle in his holder aflame again so he could put a few items away. At some point, Dream took off his dress and stockings and gloves and jewelry. He matched Nightmare in his simple and silk night gown. It was short sleeves instead and a pastel yellow. His curly blonde hair wasn't long enough to tie up. Still, the matching sun necklace was around his neck and resting on his small chest.
The twins got matching necklaces, one of the sun for Dream and one of the moon for Nightmare. They were matching yet they were opposites. The sun was a yellow diamond in golden chains. The moon was a dark purple amethyst in silver chains. The twins were matching yet opposites, just like the necklaces.
The small twin put a book mark into his book. He put it on the bedside table and pulled his blanket onto his body. He let the candle go out with a blink, leaving the twin princes in the dark to sleep.
The sun finished setting outside, leaving this part of the world in darkness, only the moon giving soft light to the tower. The cool wind pushed open the curtains in a flowy wave. The pale moon light landed on the princes' bodies and the rug between the both of their beds.
Nightmare lay awake, staring at his brother across the room. His pale skin shined in the moon's pale blue glow. He felt the night air cool his skin from the heat of his blanket and nightgown.
Unable to sleep, the moon prince climbed out of bed. He crawled out of the window, sitting on his knees as the nightgown flowed with the wind, barely covering his legs anymore. He felt his legs cool, as his darkly themed stockings were breathable.
The prince of the night crawled over to the edge of the balcony. He hung his legs over the edge, feeling his skirt flowing with the wind. He didn't mind, as he was all alone. He was alone with the moon.
With the connection between Nightmare and the moon, he might as well be completely alone.
The prince was as dark as the night. He didn't care what the others said. He was Nightmare, the prince of the moon and the night. He wasn't one who was supposed to care. But still, sometimes, the harsh words did sting.
"I will get us out of here by dawn," the dark prince declared to the moon, standing to be nose-to-nose to the queen of the night sky.
The cold wind blew against him, blowing his messy braid back along with his night gown skirt.
"I will," he insisted.
Another, stronger gust of wind blew against the night prince, as if the moon was taunting him.
"And who are you, tiny dark prince of mine, to decide the fate of you and your brother?" the pale blue moon taunted, blowing her cold wind against her little prince.
"I am Nightmare, the prince of the night and moon!" The dark twin exclaimed.
The cold night wind soon stopped, as the moon saw she couldn't get the strong male to fall. He kept his stance, facing the wind and the moon with determination.
"Listen and remember my riddle, young 'son'," the moon began as she stopped blowing against the dark male.
The determined prince walked to the small bride around the balcony. He stared at the pale moon, waiting for her to continue.
The queen of the night sky knew what he was waiting for. They were one of the same, yet they weren't close to similar.
The crisp night air was still blowing gently, the prince' said braid waving behind him and just above his back. He stared the moon in the face as he waited for her.
"Yes, while the incubuses were of a pure and blessed ending, a contrasting one is what you'll have. Once it's in your grasps, nothing could be better, but the unexpected is to arrive soon."
"What do you mean?!" the dark prince exclaimed.
"You will see," said the queen of the dark sky.
Nightmare stared up at her as she stopped speaking. With a sigh, he turned and returned to his bed. He climbed onto his mattress, pulling his blanket over his body. He relaxed his muscles, settling into the rough mattress yet warm blanket and soft pillow.
The night was still, the dark beginning to wrap around Nightmares as he lost consciousness.
~
Nightmare awoke first, the sun barely starting to make it into the sky. He got off his bed and took off his nightgown. He pulled on his black gloves and grabbed his clothes. He pulled on his pants, covering the black and purple stockings and pulled on his shirt. He slipped on his completely homemade vest and buttoned the golden buttons to keep his rather tight vest press on his chest, holding it tight on his figure.
The dark prince undid his braid, getting a brush from the black vanity on his half of the room. He sat down, starting to brush his long and straight dark purple hair, straightening and cleaning it as he brushed it gently.
As the sun raised more, Dream's eyes opened at the feeling of warm sunlight starting to warm his pale face. He sat up, his curly blonde hair all knotted up and messy.
"Day number two," the sun prince mumbled as he got out of bed. He rubbed his eye, yawning.
"Good morning." Nightmare didn't turn around to see his brother.
"Is there any breakfast?" The smaller looked around, feeling rather hungry from not eating for an entire day.
"Not yet, but there will be." Nightmare looked back at his twin.
"What are you talking about?"
The dark prince didn't reply.
Dream sighed and grabbed his dress and changed into it. He added his accessories and gloves, trying to smile despite his hunger. He slipped two golden heels he found in a wardrobe onto his feet, feeling extra pretty.
The bright prince sat on the white chair for his white vanity, looking at himself through the shiny mirror. He started to brush his blonde curls to make them look better, wincing when he felt himself hit a knot.
After a few minutes of getting rid of knots, Dream began to fix his curls, making his hair look pretty. His golden curls looked pretty again as he ran his fingers through his hair.
The feminine male started to do his makeup. He smiled, loving his ability to do makeup. It was feminine and light and bubbly. It was just so pretty. Dream loved it, as pink and yellow were his favorite colors. He loved the colors on himself, as they matched his pale skin.
In his beautiful princess look, Dream grabbed his unfinished book and a few others and sat down outside, sitting in the middle of the balcony. He felt the sun, starting to finish his book.
The sun prince sat on his knees, hoping to be seen by that same silver knight he saw in the forest the day before. He looked up every now and then, hoping he would get to see him again.
"My prince..." Dream put his bookmark in his book. He climbed over to the edge, staring at where he saw the silver knight. "Please. Come for me. I don't want to be away from you. You're the one I need. My prince. My knight in shining armor."
A slight shine was seen somewhere in the forest. The bright prince almost fell of the balcony, grabbing the rope nearby. He felt his heart beat fast as he waited for his shining knight to come out and come for him.
But the silver knight never came.
Leaving his painted lips was a soft sigh of disappointment. The male princess pressed his lips against his golden glove before gently blowing it towards where he first saw the knight.
"Day number two," Dream repeated, sighing once again.
"Dream! I have a surprise for you!" the dark prince called for his brother, climbing out of the window.
"You do? What is it?" Dream watched as his twin got the large basket.
"Close your eyes." The moon prince gave him a confident smile, not wanting him to see what was going on.
Gullibly trusting him, the sun prince close his eyes tight, making everything go black for him. He felt his brother's hand grab his, leading him to the middle of the brick balcony. He didn't know what was going on, but he trusted his brother with his life.
"I'm going to make you stand somewhere. You have to sit in it and make sure to be careful," Dream heard his twin say. He felt him grab his foot, leading it to be on a different feeling floor. Nightmare did the same with his other foot. "You can sit down now."
The sun prince nodded and sat down, feeling like he was in a teacup shape or a basket. He felt his fluffy skirt puff up as he sat.
"What's going on, Nighty?" Dream asked as he felt around. He was in a large basket, so he held the handle with both hands. He felt himself get lifted, rather, the basket he was in get lifted.
"Don't question it."
Nightmare pulled the rope, lifting the basket up. He pulled up and up before starting to lower the basket gently. The rope was a little heavy, but luckily, Dream was really light, so it wasn't too heavy for him. He was in a hood stance, going this slowly and smoothly.
The dark prince hadn't shown Dream, but he made a messangers bag. He put books, fabric, and clothes in it.
Dream slowly opened his eyes when he felt his basket get lowered. It was lowered under the balcony, so he couldn't exactly go back. He screamed, gripping the handle for his life.
"What are you doing?!" Dream screeched.
"We're escaping," the moon prince replied, still lowering the other.
"No! Bring me up!" The sun prince wasn't as strong as his brother, and he was feet under the balcony. His little scrawny arms wouldn't be able to climb the rope, as he would probably slip and fall to his death.
"Nah. We're escaping, don't worry." The darker twin continued lowering his brother as he simply crossed his gloved arms, aggravated from being tricked by his own twin brother.
"I don't wanna!" the make princess whined, huffing as he sat in his basket.
"We're going to make it home!" Nightmare called down to his blonde twin.
The feminine prince was pouting in the basket as he was lowered. After a few, long minutes, Dream's basket landed on the ground. As more rope was let down, the basket fell forward. With it, the small prince fell on his chest, though he looked up so his princess makeup wouldn't get ruined by any of the fresh green grass on the ground. His golden blonde hair hugged his pale face as he pouted, his blushed cheeks slightly puffed up.
Still in the tower, Nightmare was grabbing his bag, slinging it over his shoulder and it rested on the opposing hip. He double checked everything, grabbing a few candles to shove into a small pocket he made just in case. He was ready and tied the rope to the curtain rail.
"Okay, Nightmare, you can do this," mumbled the prince of the moon, holding the rope that as tight. "You are The Prince of Darkness."
Taking in a deep breath, the dark twin jumped, grabbing the rope. He spun around once before sliding down, his black gloves doing well to protect his hands from the hot friction the rope and his hands would produce together.
The speed made the long braid fly behind Nightmare as his loose and flowing pants flapped like two flags. The turned over basket with Dream got closer and closer as each second passed by.
About ten feet above Dream, the taller twin jumped, landing next to his brother, his knee hitting the grass as his other leg bent. He did this to land safer, helping him not break his legs.
The circle of green grass around his landing place turned black and felt cold to the touch. Nightmare stood, the grass crunching under his fixed boots.
"Come on!" The moon twin grabbed the small wrist of his brother, forcing him to stand and follow him as he ran away from the tower and into the woods.
~
"Today has been a good day!" Nightmare sang as he fried eggs on rocks he just brought out of the fire.
Dream was pouting, sitting on his large rock. He stared at his fire, which he had to create. He frowned more, the flame bursting up. The sun boy was so pissed at his brother. He had dragged him into this mess and now, he can't get back into his tower.
Nightmare looked over at his brother, frowning as he flipped the eggs.
"What's wrong?" The dark one frowned.
"You ruined this! I hate you! You ruined what would have been perfect!" Dream screamed, standing up in frustration.
"What are you talking about?" The moon prince watched his brother. "I saved us both!"
"I wanted to wait! We are the Queen's sons! The whole world would be searching for us by the thirtieth day!" The blonde boy's golden eyes started to fill with warm, burning tears. "I wanted to be rescued!"
"I rescued us!" The taller rolled his mix-matched eyes.
"No! Princesses don't save themselves! Knights and princes are supposed to do that! I wanted a prince to marry to save me!" insisted the sun male. He was crying, having lost the perfect fairytale life he had always wanted. He sobbed out, "You ruined it! I wouldn't have cared if you escaped all by yourself, but you had to drag me away from my happy ending!"
The male princess screamed, the fire shooting up in a fiery cannon. It was that way for a minute before the fire returned to a normal camp fire and the prince sat down on the log. He huffed, arms crossed as he looked away from his twin.
The sun prince soon laid down, getting comfortable near the fire. He closed his eyes, trying to fall asleep. He just wanted to get over this and get home, so he could choose a suitor and get married.
Dream fell asleep as he started to imagine the knight.
The royal blonde imagined a handsome pale man in such shiny silver amor as the knight. He would come across the princes and think that Dream was just absolutely beautiful. He would call for his knight group to come and see them.
The knight would pick him up and take him home. He would go to his castle in the arms of his perfect stranger and when he wakes up, he would see him. He would kiss the knight for saving him and they would have a beautiful wedding.
The blonde prince would wear an absolutely beautiful wedding dress and get married to his handsome savior. He would look absolutely beautiful and adorable, and his dress would be spectacular.
His knight would look star struck when he sees the prince walking down the aisle, loving him more than anything.
Slowly, Dream started to think dirty. In many people's minds, the sun prince was weird to think that way of someone he didn't know. He didn't actually know how they look. He just imagined being given a baby. The idea of getting pregnant by his savior made his heart soar.
Dream was somewhat curled up as he slept. His dreams had made the fire dance in happiness, doing a loving hula. His brother watched, knowing whatever his twin was dreaming about was making him feel quite positive, unlike what was going on currently.
The moon male sighed, eating his egg dinner. He was rather upset that his brother didn't even eat it. Of course, the darker male would always give him some food when the day light came, but he was so upset. This was the second day his poor brother went without eating at all.
The dark twin stood up, finished with his fried eggs. He laid down near his log, watching the fire start to wither and die. He closed his eyes as the night became cooler and cooler against his dark skin.
Of course, Nightmare was happy to be out of the tower, but he thought that maybe his little brother was right. Maybe he should've made the basket more of a hand run elevator. That he would be able to leave, get food, and going back up and cook it. That they should've stayed and waited in comfort before the prince of his brother's dreams came and rescued them.
The woods could be dangerous, with wolves and coyotes and other dangerous creatures that'll kill a cute and innocent princess with absolutely ease. Plus they could easily get lost. They could be stuck in the woods for days, weeks, even months.
Nightmare looked up at the moon. She told him the truth of the future. Maybe the dark prince actually wanted to be in the tower, and now that he'd lose it, he missed the place.
Or maybe the twins would find that escaping the tower was the best thing that would ever happen to them both.
