Not His Snow White (David)
Your pace today was more of a saunter, the usual dread filling the pit of your stomach as you made your way down the street. Work was always a drag for you.
You had never been able to focus there, confined to one place for so long. Sometimes, during your longer shifts at the cafe, you could barely breathe.
You were starting to feel overwhelmed as you slowly approached Granny's. Today was going to be your longest shift yet, topping all of your previous at a whomping 20 hours.
You were already exhausted.
"____, hey!" You heard behind you.
You practically rejoiced as you turned to face the mysterious John Doe or David that had recently woken up. Before you could let yourself get too happy, though, you quickly reminded yourself that he had a wife.
You painted a grin onto your face and fell into place beside him.
"Hello, how are you?" You replied politely, keeping your excitement trained inwards.
You had taken to reading to this John Doe when he was in the hospital and, in a way, had fallen into admiration of him. You had kept up the reading until he was released yesterday, to his wife.
But despite the fact that he was married in his previous and current life, you two had developed a friendship.
If the stories were true like Henry claimed, then he was the famous Prince Charming who had been stabbed before the curse on the Enchanted Forest. He was good hearted and kind and he had fallen in love with Snow White.
Though you didn't quite believe the stories held in the pages of the storybook, you did agree that the man walking next to you was charming.
But if they were true, 'Snow White' was already taken.
"Where are... um, where are you going?" He stuttered.
Snapping you back to reality with a simple sentence, you groaned in reply, because just up the road the 'Granny's' sign glared down at you. It was as if it was taunting you with its joyful blinking, welcoming in a flood of customers that you were getting ready to serve.
"So I'm guessing you're going somewhere bad because you're glaring at Granny's." David said bluntly, a hint of a chuckle seasoning his sentence.
"I am?" You asked, a red tint in your cheeks.
He finally released a laugh that was deep and delightful to your ears, already dreading the sound of clinking plates and endless chatter. Before you could take another step though, David's hand stopped you.
He had gently grabbed your shoulder and turned you to face him. Something was on his mind and he desperately needed to share it.
This immediately sparked your curiosity, hoping desperately that he was going to tell you a memory of his that had been lost in the heat of the accident along with all the rest.
You wanted to help him piece together his past, no matter how long it took. You would even skip a paycheck if he only asked you. But this loyalty to this mystery man, was a mystery all in itself, a mystery you didn't want to solve.
Some things were better left undiscovered. Still you hoped that he would tell you something about what brought him here to you today.
"I left Kathrine..." He murmured.
"Wait, what?"
"I don't love her, and... I don't think I ever have-I mean, looking at pictures with her, I didn't feel anything... and it just made me feel like I, well... like I had to live up to this old David that she fell in love with and... I just... I don't know how to explain it." David stuttered.
You realized as he stumbled over his words, how selfish you truly were. When he had said that he left Katherine... your heart had exploded with joy.
You wanted this, not for him, for you. You wanted to be his 'Snow White'.
"Why are you telling me?" You whispered, unsure of how to approach this.
His beautiful eyes captured yours in an intense gaze. Your breath hitched in your throat. David, looking at you with a look you could not decipher, latched your hand into his.
"____, I love you." He whispered.
You couldn't look away. He was leaning in. His eyes slipped shut. His perfect lips were right in front of yours. He was so close that if you moved even an inch closer, you would be....
But you jerked away, pulling your hand from his.
"You have a wife." You muttered, tears already claiming your eyes.
Then, you ran inside Granny's where you were safe.
