Chapter 32: Stars II
"A star falls from the sky and into your hands. Then it seeps through your veins and swims inside your blood and becomes every part of you. And then you have to put it back into the sky. And it's the most painful thing you'll ever have to do and that you've ever done. But what's yours is yours. Whether it's up in the sky or here in your hands. And one day, it'll fall from the sky and hit you in the head real hard and that time, you won't have to put it back in the sky again."
~JoyBell C.~
When I opened my eyes after passing out when Alice attacked us, the sky is already dark, the moonlight prominently showing its beautiful light through the hole in the cave I was sleeping in.
I shifted in my laying position and sat up, realizing that I'm alone, the three men not present in my vicinity.
I began to worry and stood up, getting out of the cave. A glimpse of a light source was present a few feet away from the cave, surrounded with large rocks. Then, I saw the familiar silhouette of the huntsman standing behind one of the rocks.
I approached them and the huntsman was first to take notice of my arrival. He immediately led me to sit behind one of the large rocks right across where the captain is sitting, in between the hatter and him.
Hoseok looked apologetic while he gazed at me, his multicolored eyes dimmed, the colors darker and almost unrecognizable from one another. "Honey, I'm sorry. If I didn't fought with Alice earlier, we could've been out of Evergreen by tonight. I'm sorry for wasting your time. I'm sorry that I was abrupt and not rational enough to think about the consequences." The hatter apologized, biting his lower lip.
I shook my head. "You don't need to apologize, Hoseok. What happened earlier was something we did not expect. We were clueless and you shouldn't be sorry for what you did. You lost a part of you because of Alice and being outrageous for the deed she had done is totally understandable."
I said, trying to comfort the hatter.
"Still, I made our search slow down.I'm injured and—" I cut him off.
"Injured or not, I know that it'd be best for us to rest tonight so we'll have enough energy for tomorrow's journey." I explained and the hatter pursed his lips, nodding at me.
"By the way, what happened to Alice?" I asked looking straight at the captain now. "The last thing I saw before I passed out is you, stabbing her in the eye." I said, making the captain's slouched body straighten, onyx eyes settling on my form.
"It wasn't just Alice or whatever you call her. There are atleast seven witches united in the vessels body. They all died when I stabbed the vessel in the eye, releasing the bounded souls bind by black magic. I think they did a great sacrifice to be able to get more powerful than the hatter residing in Evergreen." The captain explained, his eyes partially sweeping through the hatter before locking once again with mine.
"It's my fault. If I hadn't turned them into witches, they would never have turned against me." Hoseok sighed, closing his eyes.
"Exactly. Who in there right mind would turn innocent women into witches?" The captain mocked and I shot him a glare but he just rolled his eyes, totally unbothered.
"I was never in my right mind, thief." The hatter countered, eyes still closed.
"I think it would be best for all of us to stay here tonight. Hunters could be all around Evergreen as of the moment. We couldn't risk getting caught." I declared.
The huntsman nodded as a sign of approval. The captain shrugged his shoulders while the hatter let out a sigh of defeat.
"I'll keep watch for tonight. Some wild animals or even hunters could come at this part of the forest. We should be vigilant at all times." The captain announced, walking towards the dark path where canopies littered the forest grounds.
"I'll join him and keep watch. The two of you could rest for now. We still got a long journey ahead of us." I informed our other two companions.
"Don't you need rest, honey? We can—" I cut him off.
"Hush, now. You need to rest so your injury would get better, hatter. Also, I just woke up from my slumber. My eyes would be wide open for the next few hours." I stated, making the hatter consider my point.
"Just so you know, señorita," The huntsman spoke, shifting in his place in the ground. "I'm a light sleeper. If you feel warry of our surroundings, just tap my shoulder and I'll be ready to do the rescue." The huntsman winked, making me chuckle.
"Alright, Seokjin. I'd be sure to do that." I said, a small smile etched in my lips.
"You could also wake me up, honey." The hatter said, his eyelids slowly closing. "I could still protect you even with this injury."
"Of course, Hoseok. I know." I said, brushing away the hatter's bangs from his forehead.
"Sleep tight." I wished for the both of them before standing up, walking to the place where the captain disappeared to.
Upon arriving at the group of tall trees, I looked around in hopes of finding the captain leaning on a canopy's large root but to no avail. My search for the captain was fruitless not until I saw a bulky man taking predatory steps towards me.
"Seems like my meal for tonight would last for a couple of days." The unknown man laughed, fastening his steps to capture me.
In reflex, I dashed towards where the hatter and huntsman are closely huddled together, sleeping soundly. Yet, before I could go much further away from the unknown man, a loud whistle echoed throughout the area we are in and seconds after that, a shadow passed by me and knocked the bulky man out.
The captain clicked his tongue. "This pervert just ruined my little moment of watching you search for me cluelessly in this forest, lassie."
I turned to the captain, quickly sending him a glare. "You've been watching me this whole time?" I asked to which he confirmed with a brief nod of his head.
"How come I couldn't spot you? Where did you hide?" I asked, curious as to why I didn't even caught a glimpse of his silhouette.
The captain chuckled. "You might've been busy checking from left to right but you missed checking what's above you, lassie." The captain stated, a teasing tone coating his voice.
I shrugged, giving him a death stare. "As I've said, you should have called me so that I didn't end up wandering further in the depths of Evergreen."
The captain turned away from me, seeming unaffected. "And as I've said, I enjoyed watching you clueless to where I went to. It's not an everyday chance, right?"
I scoffed, crossing my arms infront of my chest. "You enjoy seeing me suffer?"
The captain turned again, this time meeting my gaze. "Maybe? Who knows?" He chuckled afterwards.
"You're sick." I muttered, twisting my face in distaste.
"Well, lassie, you just have to find out who's the real sick one at the end." The captain blatantly stated.
Furrowing my brows, I shivered, feeling a chill ran down my spine. 'The real sick one? What does he mean?'
I saw the captain throwing himself into a large branch, then lifting his torso to get ahold of the branch on top of it. He continued repeating those steps until he was atleast 12 feet above the ground. I stared at him and soon noticed that he's binding a rope in one huge branch of the tree. After making sure thst the rope was securely wrapped around the branch, he threw the other end downwards in my direction.
I looked at him confused and he gave me a bored look.
"What?" I asked, switching my eyes to him and to the rope, back and forth.
"Sorry, lassie. I ain't Rapunzel, yeah? I can't bring down my hair for you go climb on. So as alternative, use that rope to come up here." The captain stated, mockery clearly lacing his words.
"Why do you think I'd climb up there then?" I bantered.
"Suit yourself, lassie." The captain snickered and turned away, disappearing from my line of sight.
Rolling my eyes, I grabbed the rope tightly, starting to ascend where the captain is. After a few struggles, I finally was able to step my foot in the branch where I found the captain looking at me, an amused expression present in his face.
"Seriously, lassie? Climbing a 12 feet-high tree using a rope took you almost half an hour? A normal woman could do that in just five minutes." The captain teased once again.
"I've no energy to reply to your childish words, captain. That thirty-minute climbing was hell. I almost fell down a few times." I complained. "By the way, I've never asked how did you come back from your fall? Did you not?"
"I did fall but luckily I fell in a deep water-form and there's no rocks to bang my head to. Drifted to an island nearby and went back by the tying sea turtles on me, savvy?"
"You think I'd believe that sea turtles could do that?" I chuckled, amused.
He snickered, turning away from my view. He gazed up at the skies, his chin propped on one of his hands. I followed his gaze and felt overwhelmed upon seeing the meteor shower taking place at the far horizon of the Evergreen.
"Seems like many promises got broken tonight." The captain spoke to no one in particular. "What a pity, a broken promise looks way more beautiful than the kept one."
Warily, I stood beside the captain, my eyes still focused on the stars falling stunningly. I felt anxious, just by seeing so many stars falling from the skies.
"Do you think your star fell with those other stars too?" The captain asked and I glared at him, offended.
"Why would you think it would fall? How about yours? What if it fell with the others?" I countered, annoyed.
Just the thought of my star with Jungkook falling from the skies, makes my stomach churn in discomfort. I wouldn't even imagine it. It's impossible.
"My star could fall." The captain muttered. "However, I'd make sure that I'm going to bring it back up in the skies. No matter what."
I glanced his way and saw the serious expression painted on his face. He must be very serious about his promise.
"Lassie." The captain said, addressing me.
"Yes?" I asked, arching a brow at his hunched form.
"What if your star falls and mine stays? Would you feel upset?" The captain asked.
"Why are you asking me this? What are you trying to imply, Yoongi?" I asked, astonished at the fact that he's been bringing up a topic that I don't want to even imagine, repeatedly.
"If your star falls, it would be as stunning as those." The captain said, gesturing at the meteor shower taking place infront of us. "Don't you want that?"
My eyes took a brief glance at the meteor shower before settling my gaze once again at my companion. "Would I want that? Would I want to break a promise just to witness a quick zap of a star falling from the skies?" I sarcastically asked, glaring at the captain. "You, out of all the people here in this land, should know that I would loathe myself if I ever break a promise specially the promise that I made with my lover." I stated, irritated at the captain. "You've seen me, Yoongi. You've seen how much I value that star you're talking about when we were under the Milky Way. At this point, I thought you'd know that I could never break that promise."
Silence filled the air once I finished what I have to say. The only prominent sound was the zapping of the stars falling infront of us.
"And if you do break that promise?" He suddenly queries, eyes becoming as dark as the night.
I scoffed, rolling my eyes at the captain. "We're done talking. I don't want to hear any of this anymore."
I turned away, strutting towards the rope I've used to climb up here in the first place. Yet, before I could even grasp the said thing, a hand locked around my wrist, stopping me to take further actions.
"Yoongi what—"
"I'm sorry, Y/N." The captain muttered.
I turned to him and saw him looking at me in a weird way that brought shivers down my spine. His pupils dilated at its full capacity while looking at me.
"It's fine. Just—" He cut me off.
"I'm sorry but I need to do this." He said, silencing me completely as his lips met with mine.
At that moment, the last star falls from the skies.
"Are you breaking our promise, sweetheart?" Jungkook questions while looking up in the skies, witnessing a meteor shower by himself on top of a hill.
He's sitted on the hood of his car, a bottle of whiskey clasped in one of his hands. His hair was longer and was tied into a mini ponytail at the back of his head. Under his eyes are blackish bags as a result of his sleepless nights and dried up tears covered the delicate skin of his face.
He took a big gulped of the whiskey but it was just like water. He didn't even feel its burn in his throat and he scoffed, throwing the bottle on the ground, breaking the bottle glass.
Jungkook clutched his chest, glaring at the meteor shower taking place infront of him.
"Is it all over now for us, sweetheart? You wouldn't come back for me anymore?" He cried out, tears pooling once again from his eyes. "The damned alcohol doesn't even help soothe this pain in my heart." He sobbed.
Wiping his tears harshly, Jungkook closed his eyes, silencing his sobs until it turned into inaudible whimpers.
"I love you, always. I'll do anything for you and would be even better. Just come back to me. I can't live like this, sweetheart. I can't live without you." Jungkook sighed, staring at the broken shards of glass by his feet. "I feel like shit. It's ruining me, sweetheart. I hate this feeling. It feels like I'm losing myself without you, sweetheart."
Another star falls from the skies and Jungkook sighed in defeat.
"Are you going to leave for good, sweetheart?"
