"A witch ought never to be frightened in the darkest forest because she should be sure in her soul that the most terrifying thing in the forest was her."
~Terry Pratchett, Wintersmith~
"Min Yoongi!"
My loud voice echoed all over the woods of Evergreen as I sprint after the said man whose too kind to welcome me at the other side of the mirror with a triumphant smirk on his face after watching me fall, face planted directly to the ground because of his childish scheme.
"Min Yoongi! Come back here!" I yelled over and over again, my feet trying to reach his fast steps.
He chuckled repeatedly, his head facing sideways so he could take a peek of me. "Oh come on lassie, that's a small fun thing let it go. It's no big deal."
I fumed at his words, bursting out. "Say if I was the one who flipped the mirror upside down and you're the who hurt your nose when your face planted on the ground, would you be happy? No. You'd definitely place a dagger by my neck the next minute!" I huffed, still running after him.
"Guys, we have a long journey stop playing around." The huntsman scolded and the captain stopped abruptly turning to me.
My eyes widened when he suddenly stopped running and before I could dug my feet to the ground to halt my steps, I came crashing with the captain's body, sending the both of us falling to the ground.
My palms found their way to the captain's chest while his found the small of my back. Our eyes are locked, wide in horror for the upcoming event that's gonna happen.
A thud was heard when our bodies connected with the earth's surface. Yet, it felt like I fell unto a cushion, the softest part, hugging my lips.
Wait- My lips?!
Like I'm being electrocuted, I abruptly pulled away from the captain, rubbing my lips in the process. The captain laid there, looking at me with a look that I'm very familiar to.
His gaze travelled to my eyes down to my lips and I don't know if he subconsciously did it or he's doing it on purpose when he licked his lips after.
I gulped, feeling my heart skipping a beat and the knots in my stomach doing back flips at his sensual gesture.
I froze, seeing him do that, covering my lips, still feeling the subtle softness I felt when our lips touched.
He suddenly lift himself forward, our noses bumping in the process, lips just a breath away. His raven eyes pierced mine as our breaths mingled against each other.
"You should know when to stop, lassie." The captain's chuckle resonated in the air once again. "I could catch you when you fall but you don't want to be falling again and again don't you? It'd be hard to get up then." He remarked and I disguised the flutter I felt with a scoff.
"Of course I'd fall for you- I mean into you! You suddenly stopped running and you didn't even give a heads up." I reasoned, rolling my eyes as if it would keep my raging heartbeat from going for another sprint.
"Well, you should have fast reflexes. You'd need it, lassie." The captain snickered. "Now, get off of me."
I gulped realizing that I was sitting on the captain's lap this whole time that we're arguing. Blood rushed to my cheeks, heating it up in shame. I got up and when I looked up, I noticed the huntsman and hatter looking intently at us two.
"Are we interrupting your moment?" The huntsman sarcastically asked, head cocked to the side. "Actually I thought not to interrupt but we have a long journey ahead and if you really want to get back to your homeland, señorita, I thought we should go now, am I right?"
"Yes." I muttered still flustered from the events that occurred between the captain and I earlier, prior.
"Anyway, let's get going!" The hatter intervened, pulling me away from the other two men and walking ahead the both of them.
The hatter interlocked our hands and skipped away a few meters from the huntsman and the captain.
"Honey, tell me, do you fancy the captain?" Hoseok asked and I choke in the air, my cheeks heating up itself once again.
"N-no. Why would you think that?" I hissed, glancing at Yoongi and Seokjin behind us to see them quietly walking, eyes darted to their surroundings.
"Hmm, I don't know? I just think that the captain fancies you from the way he looks at you. Just wondering if you are fancying him too." The hatter shrugged.
My eyebrows furrowed, feeling butterflies make a presence in my stomach. "Y-you think Yoongi l-likes me?"
The hatter laughed heartily, leaning into my ear. "Why are you stuttering? Do you not meant what you said earlier? Do you like the captain too?"
I opened my mouth to utter words of protest but the hatter beat me to it.
"Well, honey, if you would just try to look at all the captain's actions other than his eyes that are confusing as it's onyx black, you'd see that he has taken a great liking for you." The hatter mused. "Your little moment earlier just made my hunch that he likes you a fact."
"I don't think that's it hatter." I said, refusing to acknowledge the hatter's words. "Yoongi and I are just-"
"Friends? Companions?" The hatter teased. "If you label yourselves with those two words, I don't agree. Friends just don't kiss each other without a reason."
"That was an accident!" I whisper-yelled.
"Well it lasted for atleast five seconds." The hatter pressed on.
"Hoseok, what are you trying to imply here?" I asked, having enough of the banter.
The hatter sighed, pouting his lips in the process. "You know you're my special person right?" He asked and I nodded. "I just think that if you really want to get out of our land, you shouldn't catch feelings for anyone. Not that I'm going to stop you and if you catch some for me I know where that would lead us. Of course, I'd be happy. But, you once told me that you have a lover waiting for you back there. I just think things would get complicated and if it continues, there would be hearts that would get tattered in the end." The hatter explained, squeezing my hands. "Also, I remember, that time when we came to visit the Mystic Lagoon, it showed the captain. I don't know if he resembles your lover a lot but the lagoon showed what it knew. The captain sure is a lover to you."
Upon hearing the hatter's words, my mind recalled the moment when we first met the huntsman back in the Mystic Lagoon. It was true. The lagoon showed Yoongi instead of Jungkook. I decided to not take it seriously back then because of the sudden turn of events from the huntsman abducting me to meeting the two royals of the land and all the other things connected to each event. I decided to ignore all the small details that proved that Yoongi did have feelings for me. Now, I could just think about the promise that he swore on the star he chose when the two of us were under the milky way. He asked me to swear on the star with him but I refused. I refused for I think it's wrong of me to swear on a star with a man I just met and it might or may not hurt Jungkook's feelings once he learned about it. Sighing, I pinched the bridge of my nose feeling my head weighing on me all of a sudden.
"Honey, don't stress yourself about it. I'm just reminding you. You don't have to focus on it. Our main worry right now should be how can we get the magical lamp so that you could get back to where you came from." The hatter reminded.
"I know." I meekly muttered.
"Lassie, stop." I heard the voice of the captain from behind.
The hatter and I stopped walking and turned towards the captain and the huntsman. They were standing in a defensive stance, eyes vigilantly observing the area we are in.
"What's happening?" The hatter asked, baffled from the sudden stop.
"Did you hear that?" The huntsman asked, his eyes never leaving the perimeter of land he is watching.
"What?" I asked but the huntsman shushed me and started walking towards a certain bush. We followed behind him closely and watched as he sliced the bush into halves with his sharp dagger, revealing a barely living cat that I seem to know.
"Narnia!" The hatter screamed, immediately scooping the cat on his arms.
From the hatter's actions, I recognized the cat as the one he owns. The heterochromatic-eyed cat that helped me to escape from the witch that tried to make me her dinner and also the one who tried to help me to hide from the huntsman when we first met.
The cat looked like it just have a few moments before it would be taken away by death. Its heterochromatic eyes are barely opened and it was covered in dark red blood. It has so many stabs in its body and its tail and one of its ears was no longer present. It let out long breaths. Eyes starting to droop and be enclosed with darkness.
"W-who did t-this to you?" The hatter asked the cat.
"Ah-A-Alice." The cat answered before breathing heavily, it let out a small howl of pain its eyes rolling to the back.
"C-caref-ful h-hatt-er." The cat said before its eyes finally closed, taking its last breath.
"No, no, no, no. Narnia! W-wake up. D-don't leave me." The hatter cried out. "Please, don't l-leave."
Approaching the hatter's miserable form, I wrapped my arms around his shoulders letting him burry his head in my shoulder as well. He cried harder when the cat suddenly powdered in the air, getting swept by the wind. He grasp on the fabric of my dress and snuggled himself deeper in my embrace as the two men before us just stood, hanging their heads low as a sign of condolences.
"N-Narnia is a part of me, h-honey. She's my sixth sense. Without her, I'm weaker. My sight is bad. Everything was colored differently from the others. She's my ears. I learn almost all the things I knew because of her. I grew up with her, honey." The hatter sniffed. "Without her, I felt like a disabled person. I should've known that she's in danger the moment I failed to hear what the huntsman was pertaining to. I should've known better. Maybe, I could've saved her before she was taken by the wind." The hatter cried, his tears wetting the exposed skin of my arm. "It's my fault. I should've brought her with me to the castle. I should've never even left her alone here in Evergreen. It's all my fault." He sobbed again and again.
"It's not your fault, Hoseok." I said trying to be his source of comfort. "You didn't know. We didn't know. It's not your fault that she was killed. You're not her killer. It was Alice." I reasoned and the hatter stopped crying out of the blue.
He removed my arms that are wrapped around him and stood up, walking towards a direction we don't knew off. I exchanged looks of worry with the huntsman and the captain before we followed the hatters trail.
He stopped in an open area in the forest and took a deep breath. "Alice! Come out you heartless witch! I would never forgive you for killing Narnia!"
Fear crawled itself in my system as I dashed towards the hatter. "What are you trying to do?"
The hatter spared me a glance, his multicolored eyes dimming its brightness. "I'll make Alice pay the price. She killed Narnia. She should known better than to mess with me. She knew what would come for her after she did the deed. It's all her fault." The hatter growled, turning to the open area of the forest once again.
"Alice! Come out! If you don't, I swear that I will not make you die an easy death! I will make you suffer like Narnia did!" The hatter shouted furiously.
A chuckled resonated in the air before Alice appeared before us.
"Looking for me, hatter?" Alice asked, her voice scarier than we first met. A menacing smirk is painted on her lips where little drops of blood ooze down to her chin.
Her appearance was less hideous than it was when I escaped from her grasps last time. As far as I could remember, her face was melted when the hatter saved me from being her meal. Now, her eyes are present but they are multicolored like the hatter's. Her face also looked more of a middle aged woman than an old shabby lady.
"Alice." The hatter growled her name. "You will pay for what you've done to Narnia!"
The hatter charged at the witch and Alice's smirk grew bigger, an evil glint shining in her eyes. Once the hatter took a hold of her wrist, she raised her other hand and a black bolt of power was released from her palm, colliding with the hatter's aggressive form, sending the hatter the opposite direction, hitting a tall canopy.
The hatter looked taken aback for a second but he quickly stood up on his feet, charging to Alice's direction once again. Alice snorted seeing the hatter try to charge at her once again and flick her fingers at the hatter's direction sending Hoseok to the tall canopy once again. She moved her forefinger back and forth repeatedly and the motion resulted to the hatter getting smashed on the tree repeatedly.
"This is fun. We should've done it before, my sisters." Alice laughed, seeing the hatter having a difficulty in standing up.
"W-when did y-you get so s-strong?" The hatter stuttered out, hissing at the pain his body received from the continuous torture from the witch.
"Oh, you can't sense why now? You make me feel so piteous, hatter. You can't really guess it? Is your eyesight that bad? You can't hear voices from a meter away now? Is it that bad for you when you lose your cat?" Alice mocked, but the hatter's face remained contorted in pain.
'He can't hear her' a sudden realization struck me.
Alice continued to walk towards the hatter until she's a feet away from him, the hatter tried to get away but the roots of the tree he was thrown to suddenly took ahold of him, restraining his movements. Alice then held his neck before taking his hat off, throwing it away.
"You know what, hatter?" Alice snickered. "We're done watching you do the things you like without any restraint. We're done seeing you get women have tea parties with you only to turn them into cannibals. We're done seeing you laugh at us whenever we failed in making a potion that would make us normal again. All of us are so done with you." Alice growled, her voice sounding different from each sentence she spoke. "You, shall disappear for all the things you've done!"
Alice squeezed the hatter's neck, choking him. Raising her unoccupied hand, a black bolt of energy was starting to appear once again but before it could struck the hatter, I shot into action.
I rushed to where they are and twisted the hand that's about to release the black power bolt making the bolt hit the branch of the tree instead.
That made Alice turn her attention towards me. She left the restrained and powerless hatter and chuckled, raising her chin while scanning my form.
"Oh, so you're here too, sweetie." Alice chirped. "Didn't know I would be having a revenge with you and the hatter today." She smiled, her multicolored eyes glinting with excitement.
"You're not going to get your revenge to anyone today." I scoffed, backing away as she took steps forwards.
"You think?" Alice chuckled before she raised her hand making me fly forward towards her.
I tried to get away from whatever invisible thing was holding me but it was to no use. It's black magic nd I knew nothing on how to protect myself from it.
Alice stood infront of me and grinned, the oozing blood on her lips staining her teeth. "The hatter must've taken a liking for you seeing that you're still normal 'til now." Alice stated, scrutinizing me from head to toe. "Too bad because what he likes is what we hate. Now, goodbye sweetie. Hope you feel so much pain while you die." Alice stated raising her hand once again to shoot a power bolt but once again interrupted, this time by the huntsman.
Seokjin delivered a harsh punch into the witch face sending her falling to the ground. Her grasp on me was released and the huntsman caught me before I fall with her.
He immediately guided me towards a large rock but before we could take shelter, a loud scream of frustration was heard and the two of us got frozen on our place.
"I've enough! You're all going to die!" Alice screamed, her open hands closing slowly. In sync to the motion her hands was making is the shortage of respiration the hatter, huntsman and I was feeling.
I felt my lungs giving up on me and saw dark spots clouding my vision. The huntsman on the other hand was already unconscious, his face paling.
Before I succumbed into the darkness of what I seemed is my death, I heard an ear-splitting scream and the painful choking was stopped. I fall to the ground and was able to make out the silhouette of the captain, his daggers stained with blood, pierced into Alice's eyes.
That's when I lost consciousness. Not hearing the words the captain uttered afterwards.
"Y/N, stays with me."
