"Sparing" The Heartbreak
2 days left..
//Max's POV//
"Well shit. That was easy."
I looked down at my own duffel bag, now packed for tomorrow.
I sighed, as I remembered as I had to leave
Y/n.
"So, Max, When are you planning to tell Y/n that you like her? Today or tomorrow?" Neil asked.
"Shut up Neil, I lost my chance with the Lake Lilac social being cancelled."
"Don't be like that. I asked Jaiden, so I think you can ask Y/n."
"I'm serious, Neil. It isn't going to happen," I denied.
"Max, listen. You have to do this. For your sake, and hers," Neil pointed to me.
I stared at him for a minute, then to the ground.
I went to leave the tent, "I can't, Neil. I just can't."
So I left him, dumbfounded and frustrated.
I didn't care though, Y/n was the only one on my brain.
I couldn't live without her, she gave me a will to keep going.
I needed her like a drug, yet I couldn't spout out the three words "I love you" to her the day before we leave and most likely never see each other again.
I sighed again, looking up to the sky, shoving my hands into my pockets.
Suddenly, hands covered my eyes and her familiar, sweet voice spoke, "Guess who?"
"Hmm...Emma Watson?" I guessed sarcastically.
"Nope."
"Jerry Seinfeld?"
"Nah."
"David Schwimmer?"
"Gee, I wish."
"Meghan Trainor?"
"Again, I wish, but no."
"Okay I'm stumped, who are you, mysterious person?" I asked jokingly.
"C'mon, wasn't it obvious? It's me, Miley Cyrus," She removed her hands, revealing her smiling face.
"Christ, I hope not," I made an exaggerated face of disgust, causing her laugh hysterically.
She nudged me with her elbow, "Wanna hang out, dum-dum?"
"Sure thing, Kitty."
—Time Skip—
We were just laying on the floor of Y/n's tent together.
I looked over to Y/n, who was just staring at the ceiling.
"Y/n? You good?" I tapped her on the shoulder.
"Yeah, Yeah, I'm fine. Just Spacin' out, ya know?"
"Yeah.." I looked down, "I'm gonna miss you."
"Me too, Max," She took my hand, "I can't wait to see you again."
That last sentence made my heart jump.
She wants to see me again.
When I said it, it was only something to at least try to make myself feel better but with her saying it, it made me jitter with excitement, despite still being melancholy that I'm leaving my Kitty.
"Max, you're one of the best people I've ever met."
"You really mean that?" I asked.
"Of course! But remember Jaiden is always my number one though," Y/n held up her finger.
"Heh, Of course."
"I'm..glad we met and ran into the forest and fought that bear together," She blushed.
"Me too. I wish we can just relive this summer all over again, even if I fucking hate it here, you make it better."
"Thanks. Can I show you something?"
"Sure," I sat up.
Y/n went under her cot and grabbed a piece of notebook paper, "I want you to read this."
"What..is it?"
"Lyrics. It's for a song that I wrote," She explained.
I read the words carefully, then noticing small reminders of notes for the chord under the words.
"I love it, Y/n. It reminds me of all we did this past summer."
"That's why I wanted you to read it. I had a feeling that you'd like it."
I looked to my wrist, the friendship bracelet and Y/n followed my gaze to the small, woven item.
"I'm never taking it off," I nodded.
"That means a lot to me, Max."
I squeezed her hand, "I want to remember you."
"Same for me."
"How about we go look at the stars tonight?"
"Or maybe take a walk in the woods?"
"Sit by the lake?"
"Run away into the night?"
"Punch another bear?"
We went on and on with suggestions from the past.
This all proved my point that I loved this girl, but I couldn't tell her that night.
It would just be too wrong, and would make tomorrow even more heartbreaking for Y/n and myself.
I swore that I wouldn't tell her and not let her heart hurt even more than it needed to.
I loved her too much to hurt her like that.
I loved her too much.
//David's POV//
"Max is making a mistake, Gwen."
"I know. He'll end up just like you if he doesn't speak up," Gwen sighed.
I gave her the look, saying "you know what you did", earning an eye roll.
"I have a feeling that he's doing this because he thinks he's protecting her," I speculated.
"Could you clarify?"
"He doesn't want to be a heart breaker, especially to her. His solution is to not even tell her so she won't know," I explained.
"But the problem with that is that he doesn't know that she likes him back, and is waiting for him to make a move. He'll break her heart anyways."
I stared out the window, sighing, "Our Campers sure have grown up, huh?"
"Hell yeah. And now we have to say goodbye to all of them tomorrow. It sucks," Gwen clicked her tongue.
"Gwen?"
"Yeah?"
"Thanks for always being there."
She looked at me for a full minute.
"Sure, David."
