Popularity?
⚠️In this chapter, we go deeper into detail on divorce. Nothing too bad like abuse, in fact, none will be present in this book so far, but still if you're sensitive to this, then I would stop reading.⚠️
//Your POV//
I woke up to see that I was in my own tent.
'David must've put me in here..' I looked over my side to see a piece of paper, 'A note?'
"To Y/n,
Hiya! Glad to see you're awake. Come on down to the mess hall once you're ready, you can have breakfast and I have a big surprise for you!
-David."
'I'm honestly afraid to find out what that surprise is, but since I haven't ate since yesterday, I'm taking the chance,' I thought to myself.
I slowly got up to feel a sharp pain in my arm.
I slowly moved it into my eye range to see it was wrapped in bandages.
Then, a memory flashed and replayed in my head.
Max punching the bear.
'How the hell did he even do that?!' I yelled at myself in conflict, 'Though, he did save my life.'
I sighed and smiled softly.
I looked over to my duffle bag to see my photo of me and parents back when they were still together.
I clearly remember the day that photo was taken, Aunt Stacy holding the camera as still as she could while my mom held me, a 6 year old at the time, as still as she could while my dad couldn't stop gazing at all the flowers in the field.
My parents seemed so happy together..and then they split and it seemed out of nowhere.
I changed out of my clothes from yesterday into a pale blue tank top and jean shorts that weren't as short as you'd think they'd be.
As soon as I changed, I realized my phone was gone.
'Fucking David probably took it,' I thought.
I stepped out of my tent and made my way to the mess hall.
When I walked in everything that seemed normal for a breakfast went quiet all of a sudden. Not a word.
"Uhhhh, Okay?" I shrugged and tried my best to ignore it.
I soon got my breakfast which quite literally looked like it was radioactive waste.
I soon found a seat away from everyone else who were whispering behind my back.
The only thing I found decent enough to eat was the hash brown despite being a bit cold in the middle.
When I was done and threw away my scraps, I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"Oh hey, Max," I greeted him.
"Hey Y/n, Yesterday when I was leaving David's car, I saw you left my phone and I didn't want to wake you up neither have David take your phone, so I held onto it until I saw you this morning," Max explained as he handed me my phone.
"Thanks! How's your hand feeling?" I asked.
"It's alright, not perfect but I'll live. Your arm doing any better?" He asked looking at it.
"Nah, it still hurts like shit as well but it's gonna be fine," I shrugged, "Is everybody usually like this?"
Max looked around at the others staring at us and gave them a dirty look so they'd turn their heads.
"They're just nosy, that's all. It's sorta like you've gotten popular," Max explained.
"Me? No, no, no. Me and the word popularity are most of the time not put in the same sentence," I chuckled.
"Heh. By the way, you said that your parents were divorced, if you don't want to answer that's fine but, why did they get a divorce in the first place and when?" Max asked me.
"Well, when I was 9, that's when the fighting got real' bad. Sometimes I would hide under my bed to avoid it all, as much as they'd yell, they would never hurt each other though. My mom may be the stronger out of the two but she's gentle and has moral. While my dad, being the type of author that's a workaholic and doesn't see the sun until he's finished a book, and is unfit in the strength department but still wouldn't hurt a fly. When they finally couldn't stand it anymore, they split. I used to cry and cry, what kid wouldn't, thinking it's all my fault. My mother told me that this sort of thing happens with grown ups all the time and my father told me that this would be better for me since I didn't have to endure all the fighting any longer and so, I've come to my resolve at my age of 13," (yes as much as you say you want to do what other 14 year olds are doing, you are 13 but close to 14) I explained.
"Wow...I'm sorry for asking," Max apologized looking at the ground.
"Don't apologize, it's fine really. Things have been better since they divorced, My dad was right," I Smiled.
Just all of a sudden, Nikki ran up to me faster than I've seen anyone else.
"Hey Y/n, can we have a girls talk in my tent? You're done with breakfast, right?"
"Yeah, I'm done. Give me a minute," I agreed.
"Nikki, since when were you anything close to a girl-" Max tried to point out before getting interrupted by Nikki.
"Good! Let's go!" Nikki pulled at your arm.
"Uh, Alright! See you later, Max!" I yelled already away from him.
"Later," Max only said quieter.
-In Nikki's Tent-
"So Y/n," Jaiden began, "What happened yesterday?"
"You didn't hear?? Max and Y/n ran away and then a giant bear attacked them and Y/n hit it with a stick, then got bit! Max got so mad and he punched the bear!!" Nikki exclaimed.
"Nikki..could you lower your voice, I have a headache," I rubbed my eyes.
"Sorry,"
"Also, why aren't any other girls in here like Nerris or Ered?" I asked.
"They're boring, I like this circle of girls better," Nikki shrugged.
"Hey Y/n, do you have any crushes yet?" Jaiden Asked as she wiggles her eyebrows.
"Ew, no. Jaiden, we literally just got here yesterday, don't go crazy-"
"I have one!!" Jaiden chirped.
"You've gotta be joking," I facepalmed.
"Nope!" Jaiden beamed.
"*Sigh* You're a hopeless case," I shook my head, "Who?"
"Well, he's tall," Jaiden Started.
"That's a lead," I rolled my eyes.
"He's very smart, too," Jaiden added, "He also has brown hair.
"Wait...Neil?!" Nikki exclaimed.
"...Maybe?" Jaiden put her hands on her cheeks and rolled her eyes in a dreamy matter.
"No way.." I began to stifle a laugh.
"What?" She swiftly turned her head at me.
"You're such a fucking dork!" I laughed.
"*Sigh* Whatever," Jaiden sighed.
Just then, we stopped to hear a snicker that obviously wasn't any of ours.
I looked at Nikki and she just shrugged.
Jaiden raised an eyebrow.
I slowly zipped down the tents zipper to see Max pressing his ear against the tent, not realizing I was right there.
"You motherfucker," I smirked.
"Oh! Uh, Y/n! Fancy seein' you here!" Max skidded across the ground in a panic.
"Cut the act, dude, we know you were spying," Jaiden shook her head.
"Shit," Was all Max could say.
