Melody was sprinting around the diner when I put my phone away and clocked on for the night shift. She passed me several times on her mission to deliver food to customers.

Amused, I watched her from behind the counter. Though the most clumsy and ditzy of the entire crew, Melody worked the hardest. She was the reason we had so many customers return.

After at least five straight minutes of flying around, Melody stopped in front of me with a blank expression on her face.

"I want to pass the hell out," Melody groaned, resting her head against the counter.

"What's wrong, sunshine?" I teased, patting her head.

"Ronnie put me on dining room tonight," she said, popping upright. "Switch with me?"

I shook my head. "No way I'm giving up front counter."

She pursed her lips at me. "You suck."

I blew her a kiss. "Good luck!"

She looked over her shoulder at the elderly couple that walked in. "Kill me now . . . Hi! There's an open table right over here."

Front counter truly was the easiest position. All I had to do for two hours was hand Melody the food to give out with the correct tags.

Once those two hours were up, however, I was set to train two new hires. Ronnie wasted no time in trying to replace the three that walked out on him. Unfortunately for me, that meant twice the work.

I started with a tour of the diner, from Ronnie's office to the dining room. Both of them were quiet, asking very few questions and hardly saying anything in general.

I introduced them to Melody when things slowed down for her. I expected her to be in a sour mood after the rush she worked through, but the bright smile on her face said otherwise.

The second she spoke to them, both girls perked up.

I smiled as she talked about clueless customers and frustrating encounters. She had a way of commanding a room and diverting all attention to her.

She reminded me of Brook, but in a different way.

When it was time for my break, I handed the girls over to Melody, who gave them the rundown of how to run the dining room. I shuffled through the kitchen to the office, weaving between our other coworkers.

Ronnie gave me a look when I sat in the fold-up chair beside him.

"Break," I said, holding a biscuit.

"Weirdo," he laughed, shaking his head. "Want to help me with something?"

"Hmm?"

He stared at me, more specifically the biscuit hanging out of my mouth. "You sure you're twenty?"

"Twenty-one!" I protested, swallowing most of it. "Twenty-two next month."

Ronnie rolled his eyes. "Anyway, I'm doing the schedule for next week. Who of the new hires should get another training shift?"

"Definitely Cassie." I sat up to hang over his shoulder. "Julia seems like she'll turn into another Alexis."

His nose scrunched up. "Nope, never again."

Put simply, she was the worst employee Ronnie had ever hired.

"Can I have Saturday off?"

He looked up at me, eyes narrowed. "This Saturday or next?"

I smiled sweetly. "This?"

"Lani, I already did this week and you know that."

"Please?"

"What could you possibly need to do that night?" he asked.

"Go clubbing . . ." I hid my face in my hands, feeling his disappointment burn into my head.

Ronnie let out a long sigh. "Only because I know you never go out."

My head whipped up. "Really?"

"Yes," he groaned, reaching for a sharpie on his desk. "You know this messes my night crew up, right?"

"Thank you!" I danced around the cramped office, swinging his chair back and forth with me.

"Let go," he muttered, but I knew he wasn't angry. If anything, Ronnie liked being bothered because he didn't have younger siblings. Melody and I were the closest he had to little sisters.

I watched Ronnie switch my Saturday shift with Melody's Sunday. She was definitely going to complain when she saw the change, but she never said no to Ronnie. Not seriously, anyway.

"Have fun telling her!" I ducked out of the office.

"Nalani!" he called after me, but I was already sprinting through the kitchen.

I finished out the last few minutes of my break by the lockers. I quickly responded to messages, mainly Brook's. There were at least six asking about Saturday, and another three about random things.

I shut off my phone and didn't check it again until my shift was over. But that didn't stop Brook from practically slide tackling me when I came home. Ignoring her released a beast known as pettiness.

I spent at least ten minutes listening to her speech on "thou shalt always text back." I tuned her out after the first minute — the only thing I learned how to do from boring lectures.

The entire time, Rye and Major sat at the kitchen table snickering. It was usually one of them on the receiving end of her endless rambles.

"Do you understand now?" she concluded, hands on her hips.

I blinked a few times, trying to clear the haze from my eyes. "Yes."

She grinned, clapping her hands together. "Boys!"

Both Major and Rye startled, staring at her blankly.

"Will you be joining us on Saturday?" she asked, but her tone made it clear that it wasn't a question.

"I'm working Saturday," Rye said, which made Brook squeal.

"Great! You can watch the drinks while Lani and I get absolutely shitfaced!"

Major and I shared a concerned look.

"I only agreed to go out—"

She whirled to face me. "Well, you're getting drunk now. No exceptions or excuses."

"Umm . . ." I glanced at Major again. He only jutted his chin at her, eyes screaming. "No?"

Brook's eyes widened. "What?"

"I don't want to get drunk . . ."

Rye whooped with laughter, earning a hard nudge from Major.

Brook recovered quickly, flicking her hair and giggling sweetly. "But you will. You have to! I want to have a great night with my best friend."

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

She squealed in excitement, throwing her arms around me. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Major shaking his head.

I told him I wasn't ready.
