The Living Dead (1)
Loretta's POV
"It's going to be a chore at first but once you've got the hang of it, you will be able to come in the body and leave when the owner is awake. Luckily for you, the owner of the body is a vampire which makes your wish simpler as you will take rein during the day and then at night you have to leave the owner to go on about with his business."
"Why are we here though?" I ask, not liking the height from where we stand.
"Your host." Aurora mumbles and I frown.
"But-"
"Now!" Aurora hiss and when I look around confused, she rolls her eyes and pull my hand so that I follow her. We float downwards until we reach on an empty road where a body is resting. "You should go in now when his soul is weak since he almost died."
"What? That's him? Why did he almost die? What happened to him?"
"This is the easier way for you to get in because once his soul is recovered, it won't allow you to come in. Don't waste time with meaningless questions."
I want to protest but Aurora literally pushes me and I fall on my host's body. I thought I'd crash him, forgetting I was a merely soul, but I don't feel touching him at all. Just then, I feel sucked in by a force and before I know it, I black out.

"Loretta!"
I gasp, sitting up and looking about. Aurora sighs as she offers me her hand to help me up.
"Took you long enough to get yourself acquitted in there, huh?"
"What do you mean? What happened?" I ask and gasp when I see we are in a hospital with the host lying on a bed while two women worry about him.
"You were familiarizing with his soul and that kept him asleep longer than normal. He's all healed now and you can test during the day and this time please don't faint. You have to be awake for all this to work you know."
"Don't worry, Aurora, I'll do my best.
We wait until the host wake up and after the doctor's confirmation of his health being okay, they get discharged and like stalkers, we follow them home. It isn't until we are outside the hospital that I ask if this is even the city I used to live in.
"No, but be patient. It will work out soon."
*****
"How did you even know they will move to my city?"
"I hoped they did." Aurora answers and I frown.
"You mean you weren't sure but you simply hoped?"
"Yes."
I groan in irritation and snarl at her. "I have a limited time and you have to be sure of what to do not hope. I don't want to mess up my second chance and I won't let you mess it for me either."
"I don't care what you think but I'm here to make sure you don't break the rules because there are rules out here! The humans have to do things in their own will and if they don't want to then I can't force them to do something. Did you even read the book I gave you?" Aurora snaps and I look away guiltily.
"No."
"Then we are not doing anything until you finish reading the damn book!"
Aurora throws it at me and I catch the book. I sit on Kai's new bed in his new bedroom since it was night and he was out exploring the new city. I learned of Kai's name a day after he was discharged from the hospital.
"Focus on your reading."
I frown but not reply as I turn the pages one by one. I am not a book reading type of person but by the look Aurora is giving me, I don't voice my thought at all. I focus for her sake and when I start following what the book is saying I find it easier to go by and surprisingly, it doesn't take long for me to finish.
"Does this, my situation, happen often for you to have a book of do and don't s?" I ask as I hand the book back to Aurora.
"You might be the third living dead. This is something the mistress had to produce in order for her to not get in trouble for messing with nature. She doesn't give out second chances when every soul begs for it and trust me, every soul begs. You should treasure your second chance, don't break the rules."
"I won't, I promise."

"Finally!" I exclaim happily as I walk around the room without crashing or stumbling out of the body. It took me a while but today is my first time to actually feel I'm in control of Kai's body. The sun had risen three hours ago and everyone here was asleep except for me or should I say Kai?
Aurora gives me thumbs up as she acknowledges my achievement and I wave at her as I enter the bathroom. Standing by the mirror, I study Kai's appearance and I make all kinds of expression to test things out.
"He's beautiful." I comment on my appearance as I look myself in all angles.
I know I'm in a male's body and that doesn't stop me from taking a bath, cleaning my teeth and shaving where I don't like hair. Thankfully, it doesn't take me long to clean up since Kai seems to be a clean person. What I don't like, however, are the male clothes.
"I need to go shopping." I announce at Aurora who raises a brow at me. "I need girl clothes to wear plus some makeups."
"You do realize that you are temporarily borrowing the body and not a permanent thing right?"
"Yes, but he's beautiful. With make up on the right places, he could pass as a girl anywhere. I need to be a female or I won't feel like myself. Please."
"Fine!"
And that's how I spent my first day as a living dead being; shopping. Aurora gave me a card and I used it to buy everything I needed and I found a hidden space in Kai's bedroom to store my things. As I lie on the bed while the sun was setting, I couldn't wait for the night to be over so that I can start my mission in uniting with my family.

"What should I wear?"
"Well, the plan is for you to be a housemaid not a 'madame', so I suggest you wear something appropriate as to what you will be." Aurora said and I rolled my eyes.
She was right though so I looked around for a dress that wasn't much of a design but it suited me well nonetheless. I wore the dress and had my flat shoes on in record time as I was eager to get moving. I grabbed a bag on my way out and with careful steps to not make noise, I exited the house.
I had already found another way out apart from the main gates as I didn't want to alert anyone of my getting in and out. It would confuse people as to how Kai was walking around in the sun but with the makeup, I doubt if one would even recognize Kai. However, I had to follow the book rules and that was to not attract any unwanted eyes on me.
I took a cab to my house and when I reached there, I wondered how I'd get in. My home was much secured from cameras to guards that never let anything silly through the gates. I had no appointment with anyone but Aurora insisted I would get in today so I had to have faith.
"Who are you?" The question was snarled at me the minute I stood directly before the gate.
"I am Loretta."
"Excuse me?" The guard snarled once again and then that's when I noticed my slip up.
"It's Lora." I collected myself and he looked at me like I was wasting his time.
"What's your business here?"
I opened my mouth to reply but then a voice exclaimed which caught both mine and the guard's attention. We looked at Rhoda, who had been my house maid and then my children's nanny for years. She looked exhausted and frustrated as she approached the guards.
"You are holding her here while things are at a standstill inside. Let her in so she can do what she is supposed to do. Time is running out!" Rhoda yelled and the guard I was talking to scowled but then he motioned for his friend to open the gates without another word.
Rhoda snatched my hand the moment I walked in and dragged me all the way to the house. I had no time to snoop around as I was thrown into chores the second I got inside the house. I barely had time to go for bathroom breaks but somehow it all worked out until it was time to return home.
"I am so tired." I complained when I entered Kai's bedroom and Aurora smiled at me.
"You wanted to come back and here you are."
"But I won't be able to do anything if I will be working every second like this. Can you help me?"
"I am sorry but getting you that job was as far as my help was concerned and unless something pressing comes up, I won't interfere in anyway." Aurora said just as I lied down and closed my eyes. If I wasn't getting any help then I would figure out something myself.
***
It wasn't like I was a spoiled brat because I did know several house chores; therefore it was just a matter of catching up. As the days went by, I honed my skills which helped in lessening the time I had to spend working. I had not even glanced at my kids because I was always stuck with work but today was different.
I finished my work in good time and I was eagerly waiting for my kids to come home so that I could meet them. From my understanding, Jett, my husband, was away for work and he would be coming back today. I could only hope that he comes home while I was still here or else then I'd see him tomorrow.
I began looking around the house at the pictures of my family that were hanged in most of the walls. We looked happy in the pictures and I smiled as my eyes settled on my children beaming faces. Then I took in a big picture frame that had a picture of my husband and I. I smiled instinctively at seeing the face of my beloved husband but as I took him in, my heart began aching. I frowned and tried to figure out what was wrong but my heart ached even more that I gasped and clutched my chest in an attempt to soothe the ache.
"Aurora," I gasped her name and she appeared right away.
"What is wrong with Kai?" I asked her and she scanned me up and down before vanishing.
"Are you okay?" Rhoda asked and helped me stand properly.
She helped me to the kitchen and we walked outside through the door there. By then, the ache was no longer there and I could walk on my own. Rhoda insisted I stayed out to have some fresh air and so she left me there with a glass of cold water. I only took a sip before abandoning the glass and I approached my favorite place.
I peeked through the windows and to my surprise, the glass house was empty. I frowned, wondering where the plants I had in there had gone. I wanted to explore further but a guard stopped me. I felt frustrated but I retreated back to the main house. Unfortunately for me, my kids stopped at a friend's and they were not yet back when I had to leave. I had just exited the gates when Jett's cars entered the premises. I couldn't go back because the sun would set soon and Kai would wake up.
I looked on as the cars disappeared inside and then I ran to Kai's home. I would meet Jett tomorrow and I had to talk to Aurora about the ache in my heart. As I closed my eyes to exit Kai's body, my mind went back to the glass house. What had happened to my plants? Why was it empty? I had no memory of moving anything but then maybe Jett did something to them. If that was the case then I would find out when I see him tomorrow.
