5: Souvenir
Vladimir's POV
(Years ago)
I was running through the woods blindly, enjoying the feeling. My surroundings were blurred but I knew where I was going, so nothing else didn't matter.
There was this beautiful place that captured my interest the minute I stumbled upon it. It was during one of my running sprees that I came upon this place. It was near a werewolf pack, which meant I should stay clear of it but I couldn't convince myself to and even backed myself up that it was not in their territory.
Not all werewolves were enemies with my kind but unfortunately, there were a huge werewolf population that didn't want to associate with my kind. I wasn't sure if this pack was an enemy or friend and I wasn't in the mood to find out.
The place might have not been in their territory but being this close to a werewolf pack meant there were likely rogues around. It's not like I couldn't handle a rogue, but that it took too much to handle one and where there is one, more was to be expected around.
So far, in the three years I've been coming here, I haven't encountered a single rogue, so I didn't mind coming again and again.
I slowed down as I arrived to my destination before stopping completely when I reached my entry. Before me was a wall of vines that covered a huge rock. The vines produced beautiful purple flowers. The vines successfully hid an opening of which I deemed myself lucky to have found it.
I had been chasing a hare when it dived through the vines, out of my reach. I couldn't believe my eyes since I was certain there wasn't a way through but after prodding around, I found the opening.
I was too curious for my own good which has got me in trouble countless times, fortunately in this case the outcome was positive. The opening wasn't that big and instead of letting it be, I managed to get myself through and that's how I came upon this breathtaking place.
I stood still as I took in my surroundings, a habit, as I made sure there was no one watching or following me. After confirming my safety, I bent down to part the vines so I could go through but just as I took a step forward, I heard growls and shouts.
I hastily stood tall and turned in the direction the noise was coming from. The growls and shouts continued and without a second thought, I ran in that direction. I saw the battle ahead, wolves engaged in a bloody fight. I could have went away away but a certain cry was what made me push forward.
As I approached, a wolf leaped at me and having seen it on time, I slid beneath it barely avoiding its claws. I had scarcely came to a stop before another wolf came at me. With my speed, I managed to hold my own; dodging, kicking and throwing punches. I had four wolves coming at me again and again so as to not tire myself, I started fighting with the intent to kill.
**
Throwing a heart out of the now dead wolf, I scanned my surroundings. More than ten wolves laid on the ground lifeless. If they weren't rogues I would have been in trouble but rogues had no one coming after me, so I was safe. Besides-
"Dad, please get up." A sob sounded and I turned in its direction.
The voice sounded like the one I heard before. Wolves fighting, I wouldn't have bothered but a child had been crying for help and that's what got me running.
I walked several steps forward until I stood before a boy who was shaking a very injured wolf. He kept on crying, not acknowledging me but the wolf seemed to have as it changed forms.
"P-please, my s-son.,.."said the injured naked man before me.
I kneeled down and helped him sit up against a fallen tree trunk. I tore my shirt off my body and pressed it on his gushing stomach injuries to lessen the rate of blood falling out.
"It's no u-use," he coughed before continuing with a pleading voice. "Take him away, they w-will be coming s-soon. Here." The man handed me a card with an address on it.
"No, I won't go without you dad!" The boy cried.
I had so many questions but I knew this man wouldn't be able to give me answers. He was dying and there was nothing else I could do about it. I pocketed the card and stood up when I sensed several wolves coming our way. I didn't want to kill any more wolves and to avoid that I had to leave.
"Son, I l-love y-you." Was the last words from the man as I quickly took his son in my arms and run for it.
"Dad!"
The boy kept on screaming so I knocked him out. Fortunately, I knew where the pack address on the card was and I headed straight there. I only took a step on the pack's territory before wolves surrounded me.
When their alpha came, I explained my encounter with the man in the woods and after confirming I was supposed to leave the kid there, they took him from me and I left.

"Good morning, sir. " A guard greeted me as I pulled up to Jett's gate. I simply nodded at him as another opened the gate for me.
Jett was a very successful business man and it was only necessary to have such a tight security at his home.
"Alright boss." I heard the guard who greeted me speak and I looked at him. "Boss say to meet him at his late wife's sanctuary."
I felt warm at the word "sanctuary". I wondered what Jett was doing there and why he thought it to be a good place for us to meet. Once the gate was fully opened, I drove off toward the place. I passed the mansion and ventured further on. It was a huge property, enough to build 7 big mansions but only one was present.
I parked my car and got out but paused a bit before making my way up a few steps then entered the greenhouse. Loretta's sanctuary was a huge glass house where she cultivated plants and flowers. When she wasn't working at the office or bonding with her kids, she was working in the greenhouse.
"Took you long enough to get here." Jett's voice greeted me when I closed the glass door.
"What do you want, Jett?"
"Wow. No greetings?"
I had enough of Jett already,so I used my vampire speed held him by the collars and pinned him on a wall. I snarled in his face just so he got that I wasn't there to chit-chat with him. Unfortunately, Jett wasn't phased by my display as he only smirked at me. If only I could manage to break his neck, I would have done it in an instant but I couldn't harm Jett.
I released him and thought it best to just leave. I turned to leave but Jett's words stopped me.
"I found a box, addressed with your name on it. Seems like Loretta was about to send it to you before the accident."
That really got me curious as I faced Jett once again. He smiled, knowing he had got my attention. He pointed to a huge box in a corner and I made my way to it. It was sealed shut with tapes, a paper with my name on it taped on it as well. Along side my name was the word 'Souvenir' with a smiley face.
"You should be thankful I didn't tear that down and see what my wife was sending you. For the past months, you had been getting awfully too close to her and I really didn't like it. "
"Didn't like or didn't care?" I asked Jett who shrugged and picked up a jacket that he dropped when I pinned him earlier. I braced myself for Jett's nasty reply but surprisingly, he began leaving.
Why did you leave your children all alone the second your wife's funeral came to an end? Why didn't you shed a single tear as they lowered her body? Why didn't you care?
That was what I wanted to ask Jett but I let him walk out the door. I had a long night and tonight's events seemed to affect me more than necessary. I glanced around the house and I frowned, noticing several plants were missing in the room. I wondered what happened to those plants.
My phone beeped and I took it out to check the message.
'Sunrise in an hour, get home now.'
The sun couldn't do much damage to me but Ray still thought to send me that text. I pocketed my phone and lifted the box then made my way out of the glass house.
The drive home didn't take long and I smiled when I saw Ray waiting for me at the lobby. We took an elevator together and wished each other nice rest as he got off on his floor. When I entered my home, I took the box to my room and dropped it in my walk-in closet.
I was tempted to check what it contained but I was too tired to go through it. I stripped to my boxers and crawled on bed. I stared at the ceiling as Loretta came to my mind once again, a specific memory dancing in it.
I had been away for business when suddenly while I was in meeting, I received a call from Loretta. She was then in labor with her first child. It was a new experience which she couldn't share with her husband because then, Jett was away in another country for business.
I had never been grateful for my speed as I was that day. I kept talking to Loretta on phone which was the most weirdest conversation I ever had with a person. She was shouting and cursing one moment then she was all smiles the next. I reached their home just as the labor pains intensified and I took her to the hospital.
I never understood why she couldn't call an ambulance like I insisted but waited for me. I was the first to carry her child, as a guardian since she gave birth through caesarian delivery and was incapable to carry the child herself.
It was a wonderful memory and I found myself slowly fading away as sleep caught up to me.
