4: The Sun
Vladimir's POV
I study the young man sitting before me. I've been in this room for more than ten minutes and he doesn't acknowledge me. His head is bent, looking at whatever it is that is interesting on his lap. He hasn't lifted his head, not even when I entered the room earlier.
He is afraid, that, I can tell. There is something about him, but I can't pinpoint exactly what it is but there is something, a strange aura.
"What did you want me to see?" I ask Charon and he just smiles before standing up. I move to stand too but he stops me.
"You stay here. The room is clean, whatever you discuss stays between you two. I'll give you some privacy to talk it out."
I sit back down, frowning as I look back at the kid. I wondered why Charon wanted to leave me alone with him. A thought of this being some kind of trap came to mind but it was shot down immediately. I trusted Charon enough and if there was any mischief, I could have known it all along before I got here.
The door close and then it's just as two. The kid, Oliver, still hasn't moved in his position and it kind of irritates me.
"I knew this was a waste of time. I will personally ask some friends of mine to take you in their coven. I told Charon I couldn't take you in but he insisted I come, to do what I'm not sure."
Oliver remain silence, not saying a word to all that I've said. I sigh and get up to leave.
"Please, don't go." A small voice cries and I look at Oliver.
The moment our eyes meet, I know exactly what it was about him that was prickling my senses. Oliver is a mind reader, a very powerful one that is able to go through my mind. No one has ever entered my mind except of my father. I panic and try to push him out but nothing works.
Instinct has me moving and grabbing Oliver's neck, pinning him to the wall. Our eyes no longer locked, he pathetically crawls at my hand that's squeezing his neck. I release my hold on him and move away.
"What the fuck!" I curse Charon for not warning me about him. Now the brat had entered my mind and who knows what he has seen.
"I didn't.......see ....much. I just saw.....about....a girl......"
"Shut up!" I shout, knowing exactly who he is talking about.
"She's gone, Vladimir. You have to move on."
In an instant I stand before Oliver and a slap has him turning his head to the side. I'm so angry at him, at Charon and at myself. Why would I let him enter my mind? Who's he to tell me what to do? I am going to punch Charon's face the minute I see him.
"She was a taker. You need a giver, Vladimir, not someone who only took and never returned the favour."
His words stun me, and I gape at him. He was afraid earlier but now he's full of confidence to talk however he likes to me? I definitely will not take this one in.
"Please, don't go." Oliver pleads when I walk away from him. "You know how powerful I am and I know enough about vampires to figure out what some people can do with someone like me. I only trusted Charon when I saw the type of person he is through his mind. Not all coven leaders are like you, I understood this from Charon's mind too. You are the only person that can keep me safe."
I pause at his words and I know he's right. If he can pass through my mind shields without breaking a sweat then he could go through many people's mind. Not everyone can use this gift innocently and if someone can use Oliver with bad intentions, many things could go wrong.
I sigh and turn around to look at Oliver who I find already looking at his feet. He's young and he's only recently turned. He will need someone to look after him, someone to help him control that gift.
"Fine, you can come live with me. But you have to promise to never go through my mind again."
"I promise." Oliver reply hastily.
I hope I'll not regret this decision and as I leave the room, I find myself calling a number on my phone. I had to take care of the eyes first before I take him to meet the family.

"Vlad?"
I opened my eyes and looked at Ray. I raised a brow and he shrugged before typing something on his phone.
"I thought you might want to know that Oliver is in the building." Ray said and I sat up in alarm.
"How did he knew to find us here? Didn't we discuss to not tell him about our jobs until later on?" I asked annoyed at whoever snitched. A sudden thought has me standing up and walking to the door of my office where Ray is still busy typing something on his phone.
"He's fucking supposed to be in school!" I yelled and matched to the elevator. Ray chuckled and pocketed his phone.
"Did I mention he's not here for us but for the place?" Ray winked at me and I cursed silently.
Oliver was working me up more than necessary. He was shy, innocent and sweet one moment then out of nowhere he was rude, troublemaker and over confident, just like a child. Apparently, I was acting just like a father and Ray enjoyed it very much.
He had this smug smile on his face as we neared the first floor. Once the elevator opened, I rushed out of there and Ray wasn't far behind. He pointed me in a direction without me asking and I took off.
-is not fake. Please, just let us go." A voice sounded as I got closer to our head of security's office.
"You are free to go but your friend is who we are holding here." I recognized Henry's voice, who was the head of the building's security.
"I'm not going anywhere without him! And since when do you take in people with fake IDs, don't you just turn them away?" The first voice yelled.
Henry remained silent and when I opened the door of the office, he looked relieved I was finally there. He excused himself and left us quickly.
I looked at Oliver who was staring at us with wide eyes and I sensed his fear. I gave him a nasty glare before my eyes settled on the person beside him. It was a familiar face and I recalled where I had met this person.
"What? They even called the rents? I hope they didn't call mine." The young man with Oliver scoffed and rolled his eyes.
"Kai, I told you Vlad is not my father just my guardian." Oliver hushed his friend but apparently this 'Kai' didn't care.
"You sure he's not your father? He's old enough to be." Kai looked me up and down. I was offended and it didn't help that Ray was chuckling behind me.
"Kai-"
"Don't bother, Oli. I'm out of here."
"Wait a moment." I held Kai's arm and the look he gave me made me drop his arm. Why was he mad at me? I cleared my throat and prepared my stern voice.
"You two just met and you are already ditching classes and going to clubs. Do you have any idea what happens in clubs? Especially a club like this? You-"
"Oh my goodness! Can you not be my father right now? I don't need your opinion on how I go about my life. You don't know me, so buzz off." Kai jabbed his finger on my chest repeatedly as he said the last words.
"Excuse me? You don't-"
"Look," Kai interrupted me and I stopped talking. "I'm friends with him and not you. Stay away from me and whatever issues you have, settle them with Oli. I'm out."
Kai pushed his way out of the office and then we were three. I was speechless. I didn't know what I did wrong to offend Kai and when I looked at Oliver he was glaring at me.
"Oliver, I won't tolerate you ditching school. I put you in there for a reason. But you still ended up here anyway." I sighed.
"The professor had to travel out of town after an emergency call and since they couldn't get a substitute, we left school earlier." I opened my mouth to talk when he paused but Oliver beat me. "Before you go on about how I'm not supposed to be here, I'm big enough to go clubbing and I got the contacts on. I'm safe."
I got Oliver special contacts that concealed his gift, preventing him entering minds of people unintentional just because of eye contact. No one would know he had the mind gift, with the contacts on, he was just a regular vampire. He really was safe and I had nothing to worry about but still, I felt like we should not let our guard down.
"Your friend," I paused, trying to word my thoughts better so I don't offend Oliver.
"Please leave Kai alone. He's my friend and there's nothing harmful about him. He has unpleasant past just like anyone and he wants to stay away from trouble, just like me."
I narrowed my eyes at him, wondering if he had used his gift on Kai. I sighed, deciding to leave things here at the moment. My phone buzzed in my pants pocket signaling a text message. I took it out and read the text:
Can we meet?
I deleted the message and pocketed my phone. I gave Ray a look and he nodded. I glanced at Oliver for a moment then turned around to walk out without a word.
"Can I stay?" Oliver's question stopped me. "Charon told me you owned a club, just not which one. I figured it's your club that's why you guys are here. So, can I?"
I didn't reply and just continued on my way. Ray was going to see what to do with Oliver. I had somewhere important to go.
On my way, I greeted some friends that were just arriving. I made sure to keep our greetings as short as possible so they won't hold me back. I made it to my car a few minutes later just as as my phone buzzed again. I didn't bother checking it this time as I started my car and drove away from the club.
Jett has been out of town since the day of Loretta's funeral. I wanted to see him and I was glad he had reached out to me. Something wasn't adding up and only him could explain to me about it. Jett has been sort of my friend and family from the day we met but even though he could go as far as call me his best friend, Jett kept to himself so many things.
Things meant to share, he bottled them up.
I slowed the car when I saw someone familiar. He was walking like a slug and I wondered where he was going this late night. I debated with myself on stopping and when I did stop, I pondered on how to approach him. I exited the car and leaned on it with my eyes locked on him.
Kai kept walking, if his movement was even to be called that, an when he passed me by, I thought he was doing it deliberately. Only when he continued on was when I was certain he didn't see me at all.
I got back in the car and drove on to catch up to him. This time when I got out, I proceeded to block his way. He stopped and looked me up and down before sighing.
"What do you want?" He asked.
"Why are you walking? Where are you going?" I asked, ignoring his question.
"I'm walking home, dad." He replied, somehow making me smile. Dad, huh?
"Are you sure you are okay? If you want to do that why not just speed walk there. You know, using your vampire speed. It would be better than the slug walking style you are doing."
"I can't, I tried. I'm just walking until I reach the college and then I'll call mum to pick me up."
I frowned. Why couldn't he use his speed. "Did you drink something at the club?"
"I met this friend, my neighbor and he gave me a drink to loosen up after I stormed out on you guys."
I move closer and felt his forehead. He was burning up already which confirmed what I thought. Someone had gave him 'the sun', a strong drink specially served to certain vampires. It was banned in all my clubs, so how did this friend of his got it in my club? It seemed to be Kai's first time to take it, and it wasn't a good experience to first timers.
"Let me drive you home." I offered.
"No." The response was immediate and he even glared at me. "I don't want to be anywhere near an asshole."
"I'm not an asshole." I defended myself.
"Your not? Then you are the worst kind of asshole." He exclaimed and I mentally face palmed.
"Look, I can just drop you at the college then you can call your mum. That way, I'll save you a long walk and Oliver won't be mad at me for leaving his stranded friend. How about that?" I negotiated.
He looked to be thinking about it and just when I thought he might refuse, he nodded. I led him to the car and got him on his seat, securing a seat belt as well. I went to get in on the drivers side and when I sat down he was already asleep.
I paused and glanced at him for a moment before reaching out to feel his skin. I cursed when I felt how hot he was. Instinct had me biting my wrist and brought my arm to his mouth. Once again I paused and looked between my arm and his mouth.
"What am I doing giving him my blood?" I mumbled to myself. Kai needed my blood to help rid the toxic drink in his system or else who knew what damage it might do on him. But I wasn't supposed to give just anyone my blood, father advised against that. Kai would be the first.
Without another thought, I bit my wrist again and gave him a few drops. After that I began driving the car, now going in the college's direction. By the time we reached the college gates, Kai was awake and calling his mother. Thankfully, she was ten minutes away from the school doing some shopping when Kai called.
I offered to wait until his mother arrived and surprisingly I wasn't shot down. We remained in silence though, no words were exchanged between us only the sound of someone speaking on the radio could be heard.
I received another message from Jett just as his mother arrived. I ignored it like the rest and glanced at Kai who was getting ready to exit my car.
"Thanks for the ride, dad." He smirked and I chuckled. "Seriously, I mean it."
"Alright, you're welcome kid."
He smiled and left the car. I immediately turned it on and drove away but I was able to still catch his mother's question of 'who's that'.
No one but me would know I gave Kai my blood, which was a good thing. 'The sun' was banned centuries ago and whoever is making that again needs to be confronted. I'd look into that later, now I had to face Jett.
