1: Packing & Moving On
(Lucky Blue Smith As Kai)
Kai's POV
"Oh my god! He's awake, my baby is awake." A woman's voice cried, the sound hurting my fragile ears.
I groaned and tried to move my body but someone stopped me. "Don't get up yet, Kai." Another voice called out as they successfully laid me back down.
I felt so tired and my whole body ached as if I'd been run over by a car. Even so, that wasn't far from the truth. It's not like falling from the sixth floor was any better than being ran over by a vehicle.
I tried several times to pry my eyes open but they remained shut. Sudden panic overcame me at the thought of being blind and never to see light again. I almost regretted my suicide attempt but before my mind could dive deeper on it, I felt something being removed on my face and I could actually make out some light. I didn't waste any time further as I quickly threw my eyes open.
I could have smiled in relief if it wasn't the angry face of my mother that greeted my sight. I hastily averted my eyes away from her but the sight there wasn't any better because a teary but smiling face of my mum greeted me.
I had a mother and a mum, which meant I had two females for parents. I usually called my mother 'mama' when I was drunk or when I was too sleepy to say mother or when I was grovelling at her feet to get my way or when I was too emotional. She was the strict parent and I witnessed just how good she was at it.
"Oh my baby! Are you alright? Are you feeling pain anywhere at all?" Mum threw the questions at me and I grimaced, not wanting to answer any of it.
"Leticia, he's not responding! What if something is wrong? What if-"
"For fucks sake, Amber! He is fine."
"But-"
"Go get the doctor to check on him and then we are getting the hell out of this place." It was an order and mum was wise enough to follow it.
I couldn't gaze in my mother's direction even after we were left alone. I knew what was coming and honestly, I didn't want to face it. Thankfully, the doctor didn't took too long to come tend to me and I could finally breathe knowing there were other people in the room.
"He's passed the critical stage now. Like I said before, fresh blood will heal him faster than this hospital blood. I strongly suggest you give him some for fast recovery." The doctor said after checking me up. I was now seated on the hospital bed.
"Don't fret too much on it doctor. If he was brave enough to jump that floor, I'm sure he is strong enough to shoulder the consequences." My mother replied and I saw my mum biting back a retort as she pressed her lips.
The doctor glanced at my mother and decides to not argue with her on the matter. "If you say so, Mrs Cruise. But if you change your-"
"I'm not changing my mind, Owen. Now, are we done or not?"
"You are good to go." The doctor sighed.
"Thank you."

A week passed by and home wasn't the same anymore. Unfortunately for me, mother still refused to give me her blood and she made sure mum wouldn't either. My body repaired itself slowly and yes, I regretted the stupid, childish act I had done. So what if I got dumped? It wasn't a reason enough to throw myself down that height. Well, I thought he wouldn't let me fall to my death. I had so much faith in our love but look what that got me.
I almost died for love.
I believed too much in all the romantic books I've read in past years that when I got old enough to get a boyfriend, I thought it would just be like it. I'd learned the hard way that the love in books and that of real life were two different things. You couldn't blame me for still trying even after almost a hundred trials at love. I really wanted to find it and cherish it for the rest of my long life. My brother and sisters were all happily married and very much in love, so why wouldn't I? I told myself it wasn't too late and kept trying. But I was done this time.
No more love.
"Kai!" I heard mum call, when she entered the house.
"I'm in my room!" I replied as I slowly sat up.
I smelled the blood before she entered my bedroom and I got a bit giddy. The blood we had ended yesterday and I had to wait for either mum or mother to bring me some before sunrise tomorrow but now it was two hours after sunset. I wasn't expecting them to come anytime soon.
"You are home early." I voiced my thoughts and mum nodded.
"I got a call from your mother and thankfully I was a second before checking in work. She said her father will be visiting this evening, so I had to come early in order to prepare dinner in time." She handed me one blood bag and I immediately gulped it down. I moaned in pleasure and mum smiled proudly.
"I made sure to get your favourite type of blood."
"Thank you, mum." I sighed and throw myself back down on the bed. I felt ready to take a long nap even though I'd just woken up an hour ago.
"Oh no, you don't." Mum removed the duvet off me, leaving me bare with just my shorts on. "You are helping me cook. Now get up and get your cute butt in my kitchen."
"I'll come only because you called my ass cute." I winked at her and she scoffed then marched out of the room.
I laughed as I got up and put on a T-shirt before following her to the kitchen. We worked side by side while she told me stories. There was no end to my mum's stories and by how old she was, I knew we weren't even halfway there.
"You should go freshen up, I'll finish here and hopefully freshen up as well before they arrive."
"I can't wait to meet grandpa. It's been twenty years since I saw him last." I dried my hands then removed the apron I was wearing.
"I know, honey. But you will be seeing him frequently soon." Mum said with a ghost smile on her face.
"What do you mean?" I frowned.
My grandpa lived in a coven miles and miles away from here. Mother said we weren't supposed to live in one and that left us in a boring human rural town. There were other vampires here, like the doctor that treated me, but still, it was different than living in a coven.
"Go and take a shower, Kai. You know how your grandpa is, so remember to dress appropriate."
"Fine." I sighed, deciding not to push it. I'll eventually know about whatever she's keeping from me soon.
Taking a shower wasn't a problem but the problem was dressing well enough for my grandpa. The last time he saw me in ripped jeans, things didn't go well. I planned not to upset him any longer so I made sure to keep my eyes and hands off the offending jeans. After a while, I was finally checking myself on the mirror and I was sure this was it.
"Kai! Your mother is home!" Mum shouted and I grinned and made my way downstairs.
"Grandpa!"
"There's my favorite grandson." Grandpa smiled and he welcomed me in his arms.
"I missed you, grandpa." I murmured and he sighed, hugging me tighter.
"I missed you too." He said and just then, mum called us to the dining room.
There wasn't any words exchanged since that's how grandpa liked to have his dinner. I wanted to finish eating and then seat with grandpa in the sitting room. His stories were twice interesting than those of my mum and I always looked forward to hear from him. I loved hearing about vampire covens, mostly the coven that he came from. He wouldn't take me with him no matter how many times I asked and neither did he tell me why I couldn't go but I still asked and that's what I planned to do. I'd make sure he takes me this time because I was so done with this town and it's unsuccessful relationships.
After desert, I didn't waste any time charting it up with my grandpa. After listening to countless stories, I decided it was time to try my luck.
"How is that boyfriend of yours?" Grandpa asked and my mother choked on her drink. Grandpa didn't spare her a look while mum came to her aid immediately.
"He's, er, fine." I answered but then added, "we broke up."
"That's bad. I hope you find someone soon and maybe settle down with them." Grandpa said and mum choked on her drink too. I looked at her and then put my drink on the table to avoid choking. Was something wrong with the blood? I frowned at the cup and then looked up to my grandpa.
"I think you are right, grandpa. I want to find someone and settle down with them but I think I'm out of options right now. Can you take me with you to your coven and then maybe I can find that someone?" I threw it out there and I actually wasn't surprised when both my parents started coughing violently, probably liquid going were it wasn't supposed to go.....again.
Grandpa ignored them and smiled at me. "I agree with you, I should probably take you with me."
"Dad." My mother called and we both looked at her. "Remember the meeting you have? It's almost time now."
"Oh, right. That meeting." Grandpa drawled and I wondered what they were on about. He stood up and I stood with him. "I'll see you, later."
"But-" I started to protest but the look my mother gave me made me change my mind. "I'll see you later then."
My mother walked my grandpa to the door and I ran upstairs. I was finally happy that grandpa was allowing me to go to his coven but it seemed mother had a different opinion. I locked myself in my room and watched as my grandpa drove off in the night. I then heard shouting and yelling from downstairs which made me cringe. The yelling have been going on every night since I got back from the hospital. I blamed myself that my parents were fighting because of me and I wanted to end it somehow.
Tonight's shouting seemed to go on and on until I couldn't take it anymore and decided to join in.
"-needs it more and you know it but you keep denying him." Mum said and I turned to my mother a few steps away from her. She was pacing she looked frustrated.
"He's nothing but a child and I'll continue doing things in my way. Amber, he stupidly threw himself down, trying to kill himself because of silly reasons. He's not going to survive in a coven with that fucking way of thinking."
"Mama," I whispered but they perfectly heard me. Mother sighed, looking away from me while mum came to me.
"You should be sleeping, Kai." Mum lightly scolded but I barely paid attention to her.
"Mama, I'm sorry. I'll never do that again." I pleaded.
"You are fucking right. You are never doing that again, Kai. What were you thinking?"
I didn't say anything and we all remained silent. A few minutes passed and my mother came to us, pulling us all in an embrace. For now, I knew it has passed but she would still be bringing it up now and then. I was thankful she didn't disclose what happened to grandpa because he wouldn't let me come with him.
"Can I go with grandpa? Please."
"Of course we are all going with father. He's not taking my baby boy anywhere without me." Mother grumbled and I jumped on her.
"Thank you, mama."
"Just go and get packing. We'll leave at dawn." She dismissed me and I ran up the stairs still shouting my gratitude. I couldn't wait to leave this place because it had nothing for me here. No friends, no boyfriends and no life. It was time to set my eyes on new sights.
