Baby, Baby

Annabeth would like to say she felt calm and prepared when she went into labour with their first baby. There had been months of planning and they had a hospital bag fully packed a month in advance so, in theory, she should have felt fine when the time finally did arrive to go to the hospital. In reality, that was not what happened.

To be fair, it was two weeks early and they were at Camp for the weekend. The last thing either of them had expected was for Annabeth's water to break during breakfast or for her labour to progress so quickly.

Despite having spoken to Will about not wanting to go to the medical ward until absolutely necessary, Annabeth was taken into the Big House just before lunch.

"This is stupid," she grumbled. "It's only been a few hours."

"And you're about ready to start pushing," Will said, handing her another glass of nectar. "Drink up and get ready."

Now, if Will hadn't said something as stupid as that, Annabeth probably would have felt ready. However, she'd only been in labour for five hours and she was still two weeks early.

"Absolutely not," she argued. She pushed away the glass of nectar and scowled at Will. "I still have two weeks."

To his credit, Will didn't try to argue with her. It was just unfortunate timing that was the moment her baby decided it wanted out and the medical ward turned into a fully-prepped delivery room.

After what felt like an eternity of arguing with Will and screaming in pain, Annabeth was being handed a very tiny baby girl.

"She may have been early," Will muttered, passing her daughter over, "but she's just as strong as she should be."

"Get out."

Will did as he was told.

With Will no longer beside her, Percy slid onto the side of the bed and stared down at Annabeth and their baby. There was a long moment of silence where both of them just smiled and watched her sleep.

"So, um, this might be bad timing," Percy whispered, still staring at their baby, "but we don't have a name for her."

Annabeth frowned. That didn't seem right. They had prepared everything ahead of time so surely they'd thought of a name.

"I thought we did," she whispered back.

Percy shook his head. "Piper gave us a list, but we never actually decided."

"Well, where's the list?"

After some searching, Percy finally found it stuffed at the bottom of the hospital bag. It was a bit of a miracle they had brought it with them to Camp at all, but it was always kept in the backseat of their car just in case.

Not to Annabeth's surprise, none of the name's Piper had written down seemed right. Perhaps for Piper's daughter they would fit, but Annabeth didn't particularly like any of her suggestions. At least, not until she reached the end of the list.

"Zoe?" she read. Glancing up at Percy, she asked, "Did you tell Piper about her?"

"No, I thought you did," Percy muttered, frowning down at the list. "It doesn't seem like a name she would suggest."

"It fits," Annabeth murmured, looking back down at their daughter. "She has the same dark hair."

"Hey, that dark hair is all mine," Percy argued fiercely. When she looked up at him though, he was smiling. "I think it fits too."

"Then Zoe it is."
