XIX. How To Save A Life

~Elizabeth Warner~

When Louis stopped moving, everyone and everything fell silent. We didn't know how to react to the whole thing.

Harry recovered from the initial shock first, then collapsed on Louis' body, screaming in pain. He hugged him tightly, fearing crushing his relatively tiny body. It hurt... His heart ached terribly for his love.

Zayn didn't even try to get closer to him or calm him down. We all knew it wouldn't work out or he would just push us away.

Hugging the body of the already lifeless boy lying on the ground, he screamed for him. He would do anything, just bring him back.

It was a harrowing scene.

The motionless soldiers stood in front of the door, frozen in their current movement. The lieutenant was still clutching his weapon aimed at us, and the rest stood either facing the door or preparing to draw their sword.

Until I paid attention to what was happening, it was likely that something had happened, as all I could feel was Niall gently pulling me to him, and then I saw Harry walking towards the motionless soldiers.

"W-what is he doing?" I asked, looking at him over my shoulder in surprise.

"The red mist has descended on his mind. He wants revenge. We cannot stop him, since it is unlikely that he will be able to distinguish friend from enemy."

He held me in his arms hugging my waist from behind, stepping back a little from where blood will soon flow.

As we stood back and I had a better view of the area, I noticed that where Louis had been lying lifeless, only the red liquid was dried on the marble floor.

"Zayn took him up to his room. Until we do anything about him, let him rest in peace." Hearing Niall's voice from beside my ear, I nodded.

I caught my gaze from the point, not wanting to remember what happened a few minutes ago.

I wanted to hope that it was all just a bad dream and that as soon as I woke up Louis again calling me princess and messing with us. As he did until now.

Until now.

Because one of the insignificant lieutenants shot him...

Because my father sent these dozens of soldiers here to take me back on time so I wouldn't miss the wedding.

Because my vile father can't exist without power. He would die if he could not rule.

The red mist and anger at my father descended on my mind too, but Zayn stepped next to us and gently rested his palm on my shoulder. What he did was perfectly legitimate; There is no need for me to rush forward seeking revenge.

"Harry. Niall and Zayn can't hold them for long," Liam informed him, and he just shook his head.

"You don't have to have anyone holding them back. I want to hold them back so that they don't really go anywhere else anymore." The look in his eyes was terrifying.

His anger took so much control over his thinking that his eyes shone like stars in the sky never before. His eyes began to darken, but he seemed to sway between emerald green and ink-black.

"Anger does this," Niall whispered in my ear. I was glad he explained to me what was happening, as I wouldn't have figured it out. I don't understand this demonic stuff that's in them. "You can't think straight and your demon wants to break out to wreak havoc. It's good as long as it has enough presence of mind to at least hold it back."

I just nodded at the information, acknowledging the worst-case scenario.

Harry had acted in the meantime, and the murder weapon was already half under the couch.

He knew that Zayn and Niall could not control the invaders for long, but he was still ahead of the lieutenant.

As if everything had stopped, including for us, the next moment the soldiers moved, and as soon as they realized their position, they drew their swords.

While Harry was busy with their current controller, James conjured up some beautiful scenery before their eyes, and then, being half-conscious, he and Zayn directed them to the horses - or whatever they came with.

Niall, Liam, and I stayed. Plus Harry, who so far has unobtrusively managed to push the lieutenant against a wall.

Two hands on either side of the man's head, ruling out any escape routes or possibilities. Moreover, man against vampire; There wouldn't be too many chances for the soldier.

Looking closely at the scene, I could see that Harry had dog trouble, but the other half was standing hunched over and his nose was a little swollen.

This probably isn't the best day of his life.

Liam and I saw that Hazz wasn't on top, and we both knew it wasn't going to end with just a few punches.

As soon as we saw him pinning him against the wall and then the soldier getting three more right hooks in his stomach, we knew he was planning much more. It seemed that he was not satisfied with that.

'Cover Beth's eyes,' Liam warned thoughtfully. I didn't react right away because, like everyone else, I was watching what was happening, but when Liam spoke again, I recovered a bit. 'Niall! I told you to cover Elizabeth's eyes. She don't have to see what Harry is going to do. You shouldn't necessarily see it either... I know what he's up to,' he looked at me. 'I hear what he's up to. You don't want to be a witness.'

Looking deep into his eyes, I nodded and raised my right palm to Beth's eyes. She would have objected immediately, but when I assured her of the situation by whispering in her ear, she lowered her hands so they hung by her side again.

"Nearby there is a small lake under the trees. The water is cold if you put it in it cools your feet. It may calm us down a bit. Can I take you there?" I asked her, gently embracing her tiny, frivolous form.

She just nodded, and I turned her around in my embrace and, lifting her into a bride pose, ran to the water with vampire speed.

"Here we are. You can open your eyes," I told her when I had laid her down, but she still kept her beautiful turquoise eyes closed.

After less than two seconds, she glanced at me and then looked at the little blue lake.

I could see in her eyes that nature had calmed her down a little, and her heart wasn't beating so fast with nervousness. It was as if she had forgotten for a few moments the horror that had happened in the house.

"This is a beautiful place... Thank you for bringing me here." Turning to me, she looked deeply into my eyes and then walked towards the small dock with a faint smile.

My lips curved slightly upwards at the sight of her lowering her bare feet into warmer water because of the beginning of summer, and sitting at the end of the wood dock looking at the multi-colored water lilies.

As I approached her and slowly took a seat next to her, I tried to put away memories of what had happened in the house, but I couldn't. I stared blankly at a point when I heard Beth's jingling voice.

"Sorry about..." Looking at her, I saw that she swallowed, and I already knew what she was trying to say.

"It's not your fault, do you know that?" I asked her, turning completely towards her.

She just looked down and started playing with her thin fingers. She didn't believe me.

"Honey," I picked her hands up. "why would it all be your fault?? I asked again, knowing what she meant now.

"The soldiers came because of me," she looked into my eyes, sad and confused, not understanding why I didn't understand that it was her fault.

But it wasn't me who was wrong, it was her. None of this whole situation was her fault. Nothing.

"They would have come anyway... Don't worry about it," I looked at her, my voice involuntarily becoming softer as I glanced at her cherry-red, full lips once or twice. "Your father certainly misses you, so he urges you to return home." I knew that what I was saying was completely different from reality, but it still felt right.

Beth just shook her head with an amused roll of her eyes, knowing full well that I wasn't serious about what I was talking about either, while her gaze slipped from my eyes to my mouth.

I still held her hands with my left hand, sometimes stroking my thumb over the back of her soft hand, while with the other I leaned a little closer to her body.

We looked deeply into each other's eyes for a few seconds, but then my gaze redirected me to her slightly opened lips. I couldn't get enough of the view... She's just... She's just...

I don't even know what the perfect word is for that.

Beautiful? Attractive? No... It is not.

Irresistible.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant.

One or two glances turned into stares, and then I realized that I was finding my face closer and closer to hers.

I knew what I was about to do wasn't right, because she was a princess, the future monarch, for heaven's sake. I'm just a banished vampire who has had nothing to do in the country for nearly a week now. Who practically kidnapped her along with his four other friends to have the law changed by blackmail.

When we came up with this whole thing, we thought of her as just a tool... I confess that I also thought of her as an object that we sink into a box as soon as we reached our goal with it. But in the end, I didn't.

After a while... The way I looked at her changed...

Sure, I know exactly that a couple of days have passed, but somehow... I don't even know, but...

I fell in love with her.

I was torn out of my thoughts as I felt Beth's breaths on my face. We were close. Very close. Like never before.

There wasn't even a big space, between us when she closed his eyes.

It was beautiful, like an angel sitting next to me...

A beautiful angel who fell from heaven, whose filthy world broke her wings. The ones she would have been able to go home with. But now she's stuck here. On a filthy, evil, sin-filled Earth where there are hardly any pure hearts left, who might help her fit in, maybe get home. She is alone, yet the universe is with her. After all, she is an angel. If Heaven willing, she can get a happy ending on Earth too.

This angel, believe it or not, is now sitting next to me. I hold her hand and soon I claim her beautiful, heart-shaped, cherry-red, full lips as mine.

After all, I fell helplessly in love with her, I can't deny it anymore.

I want to own his whole being so I can save him.

From what?

From monsters mocking people on a filthy, evil, sin-filled Earth.

To be able to give her a home.

To give her family and protection.

To give her back her wings, with which she will fly so high that she will no longer feel the troubles of the world.

She will be free and happy.

After all, everyone has a chance for a happy life.

Anyone can be the one who saves a life.

We could feel each other's breath in our mouths, and just as time stood still and we could only feel her and me, a voice spoke in my head.

'Hey, Ni. You could come back. The lieutenant was almost flattened by Harry in anger, so they walked away as fast as they could. The king won't be thrilled, but this team will definitely not set foot here again. Bring back Beth, she should stay here for a while while we take Hazz to ventilate his head. He's not so on top,' Liam's voice came through my head and I froze in my motion.

Beth probably felt the change too, as she opened her eyes and pulled back as soon as she saw my confused expression.

"Everything's... OK?" she asked with a worried look.

"I- yes" I had to clear my throat to avoid disappointment in my voice that I could not taste her beautiful lips. "It's all right," I smiled forcefully at her. "Liam said we should go back to the house."

Beth just nodded and we both stood up and walked side by side, keeping a greater distance from each other.

Finally, I held out my hands and she stepped closer and, lifting her into a bride pose again, we hurried back to the house.

Liam was right, the traces of blood disappeared from the floor.

They were sitting on the couch with James in the living room talking when we walked through the door.

"Where are Harry and Zayn?" I asked softly as Beth and I sat down in the two armchairs opposite each other.

"In Louis's room... They can't believe what happened. Although... "Neither do we," Li replied, and James just nodded.

Not in vain, yet he talked to Louis for an entire night.

Beth just stared sadly at the carpet and I knew what she meant, but Liam was faster than me.

"It's not your fault, Elizabeth," he said, using her full name directly so Beth could see it; He means it.

She just caught his gaze and nodded faintly, then Payno sighed.

"Listen, Beth," he said again, hesitating a little. "We... We'd like to go breathe a little... If you know what I mean. We all need it to ventilate our heads a little. Especially Harry," he looked away. "Would it be okay if you were left alone for a bit?" - glanced back at her.

Beth just shook her head, giving us as much time as we needed. After all, she had felt the storm in her heart before, so she knows how we feel, much, much stronger.

Not too long after, all five boys left, once again, convinced for the last time that I was all right.

My first and, for now, only trip was to Louis' room. There he laid on the bed, completely motionless. I admit it was a scary sight.

His clothes were changed so there was no blood on the T-shirt or bedding.

At first I froze motionless in the doorway, but then, taking strength on myself, I walked beside him and knelt beside the furniture, grasping his cold hand with my hand.

"Hi Louis," I said after a while. My low voice cut into the gravely silence of the room. "I miss you," I admitted. "I know we got to know each other a few days ago, but you were my best friend. I haven't felt anything like what I did when I was talking to you or just plain teasing me" I smiled faintly at the memory of him scaring me down the stairs out of nowhere. "You know, I never had a bestfriend... I always had to focus on my reputation, so I couldn't focus on the other kids... if there were other kids of course. You were the first to show me what it's like to have a really good friend. I miss you, little elf..."

I felt myself weaken and my eyes filled with tears, but I just wiped them away and continued.

"You know, I was very happy when I saw that Harry and you were doing well. Even at the beginning, when you were just explaining the whole situation, I saw how you looked at each other. You were created for each other by Heaven... He's really broken, you know?" I told him, making myself believe he could hear my words. "You shouldn't have left so soon. After all, you have only just found the meaning of life. It shouldn't have ended like this..." I saw it more and more dimly from the tears I withheld.

"Come back... Please," I pleaded, squeezing his hand harder and harder in pain. "We can't do without you, Louis. Your absence kills everyone. Harry's broken, Louis," I told him again. "He can't live without you... No one can live without you... You brought light and happiness into the house," I said softly.

Finally, I couldn't take it any longer, laying my head on his wrist and releasing a few tears.

"I'm so sorry," I sniffed, then decided to put an end to this.

Slowly getting up from the floor, I walked towards the door, but from there I looked back once more at Louis, who was lying peacefully.

"I will miss you, little elf. You were my best friend," I said, then hurried to the room diagonally opposite.

I will put an end to this. No one gets hurt because of me anymore.

It may not be the best decision, but it is the best thing I can do for them.

No matter what, everyone has a chance for a happy life.

Anyone can be the one who saves a life.
