17) Changing of the Guards

6th January 2118

A few days after New Year's, I get a phone call from Asgore.

"Asgore! Hi! I haven't heard from you since-" I start, before he cuts me off, a serious tone in his voice.

"Since the 'timeline' discussion. I know. Tyler, we have an important matter to discuss, about the human ambassadors." He sighs.

"Oh? What do they want?"

"They want to have a meeting, to discuss some new policies they've created, and the issue of monster citisenship...in the city of humans."

I stop for a moment, taking in this information. Glancing out the window towards the city skyline in the distance, I reply.

"Do you think they've decided that monsters should live in the city?" I chirp excitedly.

"Perhaps. We shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet, my child." I blush slightly at the last comment, and chuckle.

"So when's the meeting?"

I hear the phone being passed over to someone.

"Asgore?"

A voice I've never heard before speaks through the phone.

"This is the monster ambassador, correct?"

I raise an eyebrow.
"Uh, yes? Tyler Dreemurr, at your service."

"The meeting will be in a few minutes, if that's convenient." They mumble, although their tone of voice doesn't suggest I have a choice anyway.

"Oh, okay-" I respond, before they hang up on me abruptly.

"What was their problem?" I mumble, fishing out my shirt from the wardrobe.

-----

As I reach the town hall, I see Asgore gazing expectantly out of a window. He jumps up as he sees me, and waves cheerfully. He greets me as I enter through the door.

"Howdy Tyler! Allow me to introduce you to today's ambassadors..." He greets, as he nervously ushers me towards his office.

Neat piles of paper are stacked on his desk in an orderly fashion. Two humans - a boy and a girl - sit expectantly at opposite sides of the wall near the desk. The female, who looks like she's in her late 30s, taps a pen against a clipboard irritably.

"Uh...Tyler Dreemurr. Nice to meet you. We spoke on the phone?" I offer, stretching out a hand for them to shake. The man shakes back quickly, but the woman holds it for a second.

"I believe you spoke to me. Robyn Altava." She introduces, softening her strong grip to push her glasses up her nose. As I walk backwards slightly, I watch her scribble something down.

Human child living with monsters?

Her surname sounds familiar...

"Would you mind introducing yourself?" The man asks, as I sit on Asgore lap, earning another scribble from Robyn.

"I'm Jesse Tyler McRey. But friends call me Tyler!" I chirp, the woman still taking notes.

"I'm 12, identify as transgender...and I live with a nice goat girl called Guidea! You?" I giggle, asking polietely.

"Me? Ha ha. My name is Paul Discord. More commonly known as Mr. D to my students. I'm...old enough to have this job. Male, and I live with my wife and two kids." He chuckles polietly.

"Uh..before we start, can I ask a few questions?" I mumble nervously. Robyn looks up from her notes, and glances over at Paul. He nods, and she looks back at me, shrugging.

"Did you two know some people? They were both children that disappeared. I think you may know them."

The woman pauses for a moment, then responds.

"Well yes, over the past 100 years, eight children have gone missing due to 'mysterious causes'. Evidence suggests they all died on Mt. Ebott. Who are these people you are talking about?"

I sigh, and mumble their names.

"Coral Discord and the Altava twins, Timothy and Justin?"

At this remark, they both look at me in shock, Asgore glancing away in remorse at the names.

"Why yes... Coral was my grand-aunt on my father's side. But.. she ran away from home when she was only 13, never to return..." Paul reminisces.

"And the Altava twins...they were my uncles on my mother's side. They disappeared too, in their youth. Justin two years after Timothy..." Robyn mumbles, before jolting up in suspicion.

"Wait a second...how do you know those names, Msk. McRey?" She spits, as I slowly allow myself to be engulfed in Asgore's arms.

"Sorry, Mrs. Altava. You see...my daught- I mean, Tyler, is a very curious child! They're not afraid to speak their mind!" Asgore chuckles nervously, covering for me.

"...Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Msk. McRey, please assess the new policies we have created with your...cohort." Robyn interrupts, passing me a few papers and her pen. I move off of Dad's lap, and slide into my own chair, putting on my reading glasses.

After a few minutes, I pass the papers to Asgore, who raises an eyebrow at the few lines I have circled. Finally, he gives them back to the ambassadors.

"I see that...you have allowed monsters to reside in the city. I am forever grateful to you for that. Besides from a few things, it seems monsters will be treated equally, correct?" Asgore assures, recapping what he had read.

"That is the issue on the table. There is one condition." Paul explains, allowing his partner to take over.

"We want you to gather a group of, let's say a dozen monsters, to test to see if monsters really are worthy citizens of our city. If they can prove themselves, we will consider letting the rest of them move in, too. Temporary accommodation will be offered to volunteers." Robyn continues, as I suddenly light up.

"So does that mean humans and monsters can live in peace?" I gasp excitedly, leaning across the desk.

She simply chuckles, as she beckons for Paul to rise up.

"We best be going now. I'll ring when we want you to bring the volunteers. If anything else arises, Asgore, just give us a call. You know where to find me." She dismisses, giving a backhand wave, Paul stumbling behind her with her toppling pile of papers in his arms.

As soon as they close the door behind them, I squeal in joy, and hug Asgore.

[Robyn's POV]

"We're going to be free, Dad!" Tyler chirps, muffled by the wall. I turn quickly, and stare at the closed door.

Slowly, I grin.
"What did the kid just call Asgore now, Paul?" I ask to confirm, in case my ears were decieving me.
"Tyler called him Dad?"
I nod, and chuckle a little.

"C'mon, Paul, let's get going." I dismiss the thought to the back of my mind, beckoning my cohort towards the exit.
"I think we have some files to find."

And thus begins the start of my hiatus. Be back after New Year!
