Chapter 5 - Spaces

Mae's head was throbbing in pain when she woke up the next morning. She scanned her surroundings and immediately sat up when she figured out that she was in an unfamiliar place. When she looked at herself, she was wearing somebody else's clothes.

"Shit." Mae muttered to herself. Panic started to build up inside her and her headache was not helping at all. She couldn't think straight and she was getting dizzier by the second.

"Just lie down first. I'll bring up the porridge that I made for you." June said as he entered the room. Mae looked at him with a puzzled expression.

"You collapsed on the bar last night. I didn't want your parents to be worried about you getting drunk so I told them that you spent the night here."

"I could have stayed with Monica." Mae answered without even looking at June. He didn't want to admit it but he was hurt with what Mae has said. It was as if a wall was getting in between them and he didn't know how to bring it down.

"Both of you were drunk. I can't let you go home like that during the wee hours in the morning."

"Whatever." Mae whispered to herself. She wanted to get this over with. She can't stand being on the same room with June who has seemed to forget what her role in his life is.

When June went back to his room, Mae was wearing her own clothes already. She was slipping on her stilettos and stopped when June cleared his throat. Mae looked up at him but didn't say anything.

"Eat first before you leave. You need to drink the medicine for your headache as well." June told Mae as he placed the tray on his bed.

"It's okay. I can manage." Mae answered.

"Damn it Mae. Could you stop being so stubborn right now?"

"I need space, June." Mae said, almost whispering.

"What did you just say?" June asked since he wasn't sure if he heard Mae correctly.

"I need space, June! I'm so fed up with this situation. I don't know where I stand in your life right now. I tried to understand it June but it's so damn difficult already." Mae said and tears rolled down from her eyes. He wanted to wipe her tears away but he was too stunned to even move from where he was standing.

"You don't mean that, right?" June was shaking when he asked Mae. He couldn't believe what he just heard. He thought that everything was okay between them and that Mae understood the situation. It seemed like he got it wrong all along.

"Do I look like I'm joking? I'm not even sure why I'm still putting up with you and this bullshit anymore. June, let's stop it here before we even hurt each other more." Mae said and she walked past June. She was already out of the room when everything sank in on June.

There goes the space that Mae had wanted.
