Chapter 2 - More Than This
Friends turned lovers. It was a situation that could be described best as a cliché. Mae and June knew each other since they were in college. They were taking up the same course and were even blockmates on their first year in the university. After some time, the two of them became close. They were in the same college barkada and decided to take up the same subjects at the same time until they graduate.
After graduation, Mae and June decided to apply at the same company. Fortunately, both of them got accepted as management trainees. Instead of battling out for a position that a lot of them wants, they became each other's support. They helped each other out in every task that was given to them and spent sleepless nights in the office together. They even had countless lunch and dinner "dates" that no one else knew.
"Mae, can I ask you as question?" June asked while they were having dinner at a restaurant near their office.
"What is it?" Mae asked back. It was obvious that June was nervous was Mae didn't point it out. She just waited for whatever it is that June wanted to ask.
"For the past years that we have known each other, I have always stopped myself from doing stupid things because I didn't want to ruin our friendship. But after spending every single day with you, I know it would be more stupid of me if I would not do something about how I feel. Even if work is stressful as hell, I always look forward to every single day because I get to spend more time with you. Mae, what I'm trying to say is can you be my girlfriend?"

They dropped the bomb during their barkada trip in Subic. Everyone was busy putting on sun block and taking pictures when June decided to break the ice.
"Guys, we have something to say." June started. When he made sure that he got everyone's attention he continued, "Mae and I are together."
"We're together right now aren't we?" Chris asked and everyone started to laugh because of that.
"Oh my god, Chris. You're unbelievable! Are you drunk?" Monica bickered and then she focused on June.
"What do you mean when you said together, June? As in together-together?" Monica asked and this time, it was June's turn to laugh.
"I really don't know what you mean with together-together but to make things simple, Mae is now my girlfriend."
"What the freakin' fuck?! Are you for fuckin' real?" Monica asked again, her hands slamming on the table. Mae and June were taken aback with what they have witnessed from Monica. They knew it wasn't going to easy but does it really have to be like this?
"Chill out Mons. Don't act as if they have committed a crime." Tristan said as he tried to calm Monica down. It's very rare for them to see Monica act this way. When she starts throwing cusses like they are a part of the alphabet, then it means that she has reached her limits.
"Both of you – follow me. Now." Monica ordered and the new couple followed her while holding hands. Mae and June were nervous and they did not know what to expect.
The three of them kept on walking until they were far enough from everyone. Mae and June didn't even bother to start explaining when Monica stopped walking. They kept their mouths shut and waited for her usual dramatic speech.
"When did this happen? Why didn't you even tell me?! Of all the people in the barkada, you know that you could tell me everything right?" Monica kept on talking but Mae didn't hear anything. Her mind was floating and she was brought back to reality when June held her hand.
"We didn't know it would lead to this Mons. Believe me when I say that we didn't plan this out." June answered which caused Monica to explode.
"That's bullshit June! Don't tell me that one day, you just woke up and you realized that you wanted to be more than friends with Mae. No one falls for that cliché anymore."
"Maybe some people still do. Mons, when you fall for someone, you wouldn't be able to determine the whys or hows. I know it's crazy but could you just please be happy for us?" June countered as he squeezed Mae's hand. Mae looked at him and he gave her a small smile. It might be a simple gesture but Mae got the courage that she needed at that time from his smile. She then looked at Monica and told her part of the story.
"Mons, this is the first time that I felt something like this. You may think that this is bullshit but we are happy. Isn't that what's important here?"
"You know what? I'm out of here." Monica said as she walked away from them. June then pulled Mae closer to him and whispered "I love you Mae... and that's what matters."
