18. Pillows and Blankets
They were in the hospital walking to Patton's room. As they were about to reach the door Logan froze.
"Shoot!" He turned on his heels but Roman grabbed him.
"What?" Janus asked.
Virgil smirked. "Do you hear that?"
Remus and and Janus listened and heard talking coming from Patton's room. Each voice was very different though they could only identify Patton's.
"I've got to get out of here," Logan struggled to free himself from Roman.
"What's the matter?" Remus and Janus were equally confused.
"I cannot stand those men," Logan said as Roman began to push him forward. Logan dug his heels into the ground, creating a cartoonish scene of Logan being slid in front of the much stronger Roman in a rather undignified manner.
They all entered the room. Dr Emile Picani looked up from an ongoing card game and beamed at everyone. "Hi, guys!"
Remy took a swig of coffee from his canteen and placed it on the card table that had been positioned by Patton's bed. Logan had seen many alcohol addicted people but this man defied description. Logan had reason to believe Remy no longer slept or ate, just drank iced coffee (cause, y'know, gay).
"Hey, morons, wassup?" Remy smirked at them from behind his tinted glasses. Another reason Logan didn't like him, those glasses were, for lack of a better word, shady. And the way he talked could drive any man mad.
Remy was an old friend of Patton's. Did I mention Logan couldn't stand him? He was going to give himself a heart attack on all that coffee! Yet did Remy listen when Logan told him that? No!
"Emile," Logan greeted stiffly. "Remy."
"Hey, nerd, what's poppin?"
Your neck if you ever call me nerd again.
Remus laughed and Logan sent him a look that read Don't read my mind. Remus shrugged and laughed a little more.
"Who are these two weirdos?"
Janus wasn't sure if he should take offense to that so he looked at Roman. Roman closed one eye and titled his head. He's okay. He didn't mean any harm.
"This is Janus and-," Virgil started.
"No wait," Picani interrupted. "You look familiar. I think I've met you?"
He leaned forward and scrutinized Remus's face. Remus blinked and then contorted his face up in a silly way.
"Oh, you look like Roman! Are you two related?"
"My twin," Roman frowned as he side-eyed his brother, ever so slightly annoyed Emile had only found the resemblance when Remus had made the face.
"Oh! That's so cool!" Emile smiled again.
"Yeah, that's Remus," Logan said. "When did you two get here?"
"About half an hour ago," Patton replied. "Thank you for calling Emile so that he would know I couldn't come into work." Logan nodded. "But, what are you all doing here? It has not been two hours."
"We were worried and decided to come and hang here," Virgil shrugged. "We brought pillows and blankets in case anyone gets too tired."
"I can totally get some more coffee, love," Remy offered.
"No thank you," the corners of Logan's mouth were turned down. "We all need sleep."
"Sleep is for the weak," Remy put down a card and Patton sighed in disappointment as the game was lost.
"And you, my dear man, are weak," Logan interjected.
"As are we all," Virgil interrupted. "We should probably get a nap. Oh, Patton, Mz Lark and Lily Water are still at the flat."
Patton nodded. "Thank you. I was about to ask."
"Oh, shoot," Emile looked at the clock. "I need to get home."
"Like, same," Remy stood.
"Thank you for visiting, kiddos!" Patton bubbled.
"Yep."
"Our pleasure!"
They left.
"Is everyone doing alright?" Patton queried.
"Yeah. How are you doing?" Roman quizzed.
"I have been sliced open in the past day and am ever so slightly drunk as a pain killer, take a guess." Patton smiled.
Logan had noticed Patton's unfocused and glazed over eyes.
"You should sleep."
"You should too."
Logan sighed. "Alright, let's set up the blankets, everyone."
A nurse came in as they spread out the blankets. She gave Patton a dose of medicine and positioned him into a laying position. He instantly feel asleep. She brought a chair for Janus, who wasn't exactly jazzed about the idea of sleeping on the floor with everyone. Logan had gotten used to doing stuff like this so he didn't care.
After everyone had gotten comfortable Remus was the first to fall asleep, snoring quietly. Roman's arm became a makeshift pillow for Remus's head, even though there were plenty of pillows. Next to slip into sleep was Logan, his eyes half-open, giving to the illusion he was still awake, but his slow and even breathing gave him away as he lay curled up on a blanket. Then Virgil, his head propped up on the wall in a way that was going to give him a neck cramp later.
Roman carefully slid his arm from under Remus's head and replaced it with a pillow. Roman rubbed his arm, it had fallen asleep. He positioned a pillow under Virgil's neck and then grabbed his ankles. He slid him down the wall and on to the pillow. Virgil woke up and glared but then turned on his side and fell back asleep.
Roman looked at Janus. He was slouched in the chair with a blanket covering his knees. He was slightly turned to the side to relieve the pressure from his bandaged arm and hurt ribs. His eyes were closed and his hat balanced on the back of the chair.
Roman parted his lips, deciding what to whisper, then settled for "Thank you for taking care of my brother."
Janus opened his eyes a crack. "How did you know I wasn't asleep?" He whispered back.
"I don't know. I've always been able to feel if someone is awake, asleep, or dead."
"How'd you find this out?"
Roman shrugged. "I've been to where Virgil works. The dead bodies all feel similar to when I found my mother had passed away in her sleep a few years ago. They had a feel about them that's somewhat similar but sorta different from sleeping people."
Janus smiled thinly. "And here I thought the only similar thing between you and Remus were your looks." Then he furrowed his brow. "Virgil works with dead bodies?"
"Yeah, in a mortuary."
"Why?" Janus was absolutely baffled.
Roman shrugged again. "When Logan and Patton were trying to find him a job he was still testing them. He kept suggesting morbid jobs and refusing all the good ones. Finally they settled on mortician."
"And he enjoys it?"
"No. He's been looking for a new job."
"Oh. Alright."
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"While we were in my room Remus asked me a question I didn't understand. He asked what he had done."
"What he had done." Janus repeated.
It wasn't a question but that's how Roman took it. "Yeah, what he had done. He wouldn't further explain, just asked me the question. Do you know what he meant?"
Janus blinked slowly and looked at the ceiling. "From what I understand he believes he did something terrible and that's why he was sent to the mental institution."
"I don't think he did."
"His only crime is that he's different. He's not "high functioning"."
"Oh. But shouldn't he know that's not his fault?"
"Ever since I've known Remus he has had a tendency to blame himself for everything." Janus's eyes drifted to Remus's sleeping figure. "He blamed himself when Virgil left. I don't think I'll ever forget that look in his eyes when he said to me "What's the matter with me? Are you going to abandon me too?""
"That's... depressing."
"Mhm."
They sat in silence for a moment. Then both at once they spoke.
"I think I can-"
"Maybe there's a way-"
They stopped and looked at each other.
"You first," Janus offered.
"Maybe there's a way he could stay. I could find him a job and he could live with me."
"People tend to attack what they don't understand," Janus recalled his earlier conversation with Logan.
"So?"
"It's so very hard to understand you brother. I don't want to see him getting hurt. But... if you think you can take care of him..."
"I can."
"Alright then."
Roman eventually lay down and fell fast asleep.
Janus glanced over everyone, making sure they were all asleep. He rose quietly and placed his hat on his head. As noiselessly as he could, he limped out of the room and into the dark silence of the hospital. He made his way to the exit and stepped out into the frigid night air.
Everything was still, like the world had been paused. But it hadn't, really. The stars hung in the sky high above the world. Janus could almost feel the judgement from them. Do you really think this is the best decision?
I don't know. He replied. He walked farther into the tangle of streets.
After a few minutes of walking he paused. He could already feel himself start to disappear, and a headache threatened to attack. He looked up at the stars.
Do you really think this is the best choice? It repeated condescendingly.
"I don't know," Janus replied aloud.
"I do," Janus whirled around to face green eyes. "It's not."
"I can't stay in London, Remus. I can't keep my facade up."
"I know."
"I have to... leave you."
"No, you don't."
"I don't think you understand-."
"I do. I'm going with you."
Janus blinked. "What?"
"I heard the conversations you had with Logan and Roman and I understand. People attack what's different than them. And I am way different."
The corner of Janus's mouth turned up. "Who am I to disagree?"
***
Roman woke with a paper in his hand. In messy handwriting a message was scrawled out.
Going with Janus.
Roman looked around and found that both Remus and Janus were gone. He sat up as a nurse walked in.
"Sorry," he whispered, so as to not wake the others. "I was told to give someone in this room this." He handed Roman another note and left.
Roman glanced around. Logan's eyes were open and Virgil was beginning to stir.
"What does it say?" Patton asked groggily.
Roman opened it.
Everyone,
We're leaving the country. Europe is no place for us. We've heard of shows that showcase weird people like us in America. Might as well go see.
Don't worry, we'll try to keep in touch and Remus wants to return for the holidays.
Roman,
Don't worry, Remus is safe. I intend to keep it that way. I know you wished to take care of your brother, that's very noble, but this isn't a battle that needs to be fought.
Virgil,
We'd be sorry to leave without asking you to go with us but we both already know you've made up your mind to stay. We also know you haven't forgiven yourself. We both forgive you and so does Patton, we're sure. Don't stuff down your "curse". You'll only make it worse and you'll explode under moments of intense emotion. Accept it and forgive yourself. Don't expect either to happen right away.
Remember your breathing exercises.
Patton,
I think it would profit you to see a therapist of your own. It's going to be hard balancing being selfish and selfless enough- for the both of us.
Logan,
Yeah, we're talking to you, specks. As I'm sure you've already realized, feeling emotions can be painful and hard but they're worth it. Most people struggle with feeling too many emotions. You're going to have to struggle to get there. I'm sure character development emo will help.
~Janus
On the back was scrawled: Tell Lily Water I'll send her something from America. -Remus.
Roman looked up at everyone. They all sat quietly.
"What the heck do you do after something like this?" Logan suddenly demanded.
Everyone laughed.
"Carry on, I suppose. Remember what we've learned," Patton mused.
Virgil laughed. "What? Are we in some sort of a story?" He rose and started to the door.
"Where are you going?" Roman asked.
"I'm going to find a new job," Virgil curled his nose. "And quitting my old one.
Peace out, everyone!"
The End
Stick around for an epilogue that I'm semi proud of.
