17. Truce

They caught a taxi back to the apartment. It was later in the afternoon. That time of day where the sun becomes the brightest, as if giving the day it's last hoorah before fading.

No one really paid attention to Janus. Everything was mostly focused on Lily Water who was loving the attention from all her (as Bonnie Lark dubbed it) new uncles. Which was good. It gave Janus time to contemplate what to do. Virgil had forgotten his jacket so Janus had tucked it under his arm after he had put on his own cloak.

As they bounced along in carriage. Janus stared at Logan's knees. He was sitting directly in front of him and Janus had spaced out and was just thinking. He barely noticed when Logan shifted his legs, but it caught Janus's attention and he looked up.

Logan raised an eyebrow at him, silently asking Are you okay?

Janus slightly smiled, tilted his head, and slowly blinked. I'm fine.

Logan raised both his eyebrows and tilted his head down. Bull.

Janus looked away and out the window, electing to ignore Logan.

When they arrived at the flat Logan showed Bonnie Lark to Patton's room. Thankfully it had been recently cleaned. Lily Water had fallen asleep in the carriage so Remus carried her in and tucked her into Patton's bed. Logan went to his room and instantly fell asleep in his bed with the clothes he had been wearing since the day before still on. Virgil went into his own room and Roman and Remus went to (surprise) Roman's.

Everyone was too exhausted to realize Janus was the only one that didn't really have a place to go. But he held his peace and sat on the couch in the living room. He observed his surroundings, listening to the tick tock of the clock. The room was nice. Lived in. There was still the overturned table and broken vase on the floor. He noticed a lemon lying out on the counter and decided no one would mind so he peeled and ate it. Then he returned to the couch to think.

An hour later he heard someone quietly walking down the stairs. Logan pushed his glasses into place as he reached the bottom step and headed for the door.

"There is no way it's been two hours."

Logan jumped and turned to face Janus. He hadn't noticed him.

"Oh, Janus. If you wish you may use my room-."

"No skirting around it, four eyes, it hasn't been two hours."

Logan checked the clock. "Think Patton will notice?"

"I think he'll scold you if you don't get another few hours of sleep before you return to the hospital."

"I can sleep there."

"Surely you've learned that even the truly desperate regret sleeping in hospital chairs."

"It's fine. Erm, can I ask you something?"

"Gives you a real pain in the neck," Janus went on.

"Janus."

"Though I suppose it's better than nothing," Janus mused.

"You may be stubborn but I'm even more stubborn when it comes to a quest for knowledge."

"What does that even mean?"

"I want to know what you and Remus plan on doing after this is all over."

"Remus will probably stay-."

"As much as I enjoy seeing Roman with his twin, I'm not sure that that's the best option."

"Care to elaborate?"

"We all know of Remus's lack of mental stability," Logan glanced away and back at Janus. Janus nodded. "It wouldn't be safe, not to just others, but him as well. People tend to attack what they don't understand... But I'm sure you know that."

Janus resisted the urge to touch his scales. "Yes, I suppose."

"People would hurt him and, without you, he may loose control."

"What makes you think I'm going anywhere?"

"Excuse my assumption," Logan straightened his glasses. "But you didn't seem to feel that was right. It would be hard keeping up your facade constantly and it may slip."

Janus stayed silent, confirming it.

"But we know Remus might never go with me." Janus pushed away some hair that had fallen in his eye. "He reacted very negatively when he learned I had been lying to him."

"Wouldn't you?"

Janus shrugged.

They were quiet.

"If," Janus said. "You don't mind me asking, what happened to your father?"

"He died four years ago. There was not really any cause but I know it's because he lost his will to live." Logan pushed his glasses into place. He didn't bear any emotions in his voice.

"A will to live can be that powerful?"

"Ask Patton, he's the therapist."

Janus chuckled. Patton would be the person to ask. But not because he was a therapist.

"Well, I'll be going."

"You wish to risk Dr Lovegood's wrath?"

"Didn't we just have a lengthy discussion about how comfortable a chair is?"

Janus lifted the corner of his mouth and stood.

"You don't have to come."

"Two fifths of the people in this flat have tried to kill me. I think I do."

They headed to the door.

"Janus?"

They both stopped and faced Virgil. They both hadn't seen him slip down the stairs and into the shadows while they were talking.

"Virgil. I didn't mean-."

"I'm sorry... For trying to kill you... Not just then, but the other time."

"HEY!" Janus snapped.

Both Logan and Virgil jumped at the suddenness and intensity in Janus's voice.

Virgil glared. "What the heck?!"

Janus smiled. "There you are. I didn't recognize you for a second." No one knew how to react so he continued. "You don't need to apologize. I do. I'm-."

"No," Logan stopped him. "You both need to apologize and accept each other's apologies before I officially loose my marbles."

Janus and Virgil laughed stiffly and looked at each other, unsure how to go about this.

Suddenly an extra hand slipped from Janus's cloak. One from his torso. He extended it to Virgil.

Virgil stared at it, then glanced at Janus's other two hands. Virgil took a deep breath and sprouted his six misty spider legs from his back. He reach it forward and into Janus's open hand. They shook and smiled at each other, awkwardly avoiding eye contact.

"FRICK (no, that is not the word he used) YEAH!" Remus screamed as he dove down the stairs and barreled into Virgil. Virgil'smiat disappeared in a quick poof.

"SHHHHHHH," Bonnie Lark hissed from upstairs. "There is a sleeping- innocent- child up here!"

"Sorry!" Everyone whispered in unison, sounding rather like scolded children. They looked at each other and quietly laughed.

"Is this a truce then?" Janus asked.

"Truce," the two echoed as Virgil pushed Remus off him.

"Are you going back to Patton?" Roman asked Logan.

"Mhm."

"May I come too?"

"And the rest of us?" Remus inquired.

"You guys barely got any sleep." Logan frowned.

"Neither did you," Virgil pointed out.

"Sleep over at the hospital!" Roman declared. "I'll get the pillows and blankets!"

"I'll help!" Remus volunteered.

They quietly (well as quietly as a Roman and Remus can be) tiptoed up the stairs.

"Virgil," Logan said quietly once the twins had gone. "What about you?"

Janus realized what Logan meant. Virgil lost control once. Would he do it again?

Virgil chewed on his cheek, thinking.

"I... I've kept this secret for so long. Rarely using the mist. I... Janus, what do you think?"

Despite having made up a minute before, Janus was surprised Virgil was coming to him for advice.

"I think that you shouldn't risk it."

Virgil looked at the ground.

"But," Janus continued. "I think it's your choice. No one knows you better than you. No one has gone through the same things as you so they shouldn't decide what is best for you."

Virgil laughed. "Okay, snake man."

Janus smiled thinly as the twins came back down the stairs carrying two bags of blankets and pillows. Logan quickly packed another bag with food (he also put in a few cookies when Janus mentioned Patton's "secret" stash).

They hailed a taxi and the five men piled in.

A/n: Okay, next chapter will be the last chapter. Then there will be an epilogue that is gonna be really cool.
