Meeting Mr Wayne
" PERCY! Did you get a job? Did you make money? Did you bring us anything home?" Hal chirped, jumping up and down excitedly as a young kid can do.
Percy dragged himself over the railing, and in to their hideout, a smile on his face.
" I didn't get a new job, but I did make money for us," Percy sighed tiredly.
He was exhausted, but out of his satchel pulled a ten dollars, and a bag of half eaten carrot sticks.
Hal's eyes widened and he reverently stroked the money Percy brought in.
" Jason! Nico, Percy brought home ten whole dollars!" Hal yelled excitedly.
Instantly, the other young boys came running, eager to see the money. Percy barely made more than five dollars on a good day, ten dollars was a pure miracle.
" That isn't all I brought home. Because you three have been so good holding down the fort for us, I brought you some things," Percy said with a smile.
From his trusty satchel, he brought out a small, slightly broken and dirty wooden boat and handed it to Hal. He then produced a small, cracked and dirty red bikers helmet for Jason, and finally a small skull ring for Nico.
The three kids grinned manically and eagerly started playing with their three toys, all loving their new things. Percy smiled at their antics, at least those three could be kids a little longer before they had to get jobs in the cruel world of Gotham.
" Hey Percy, I see you've made the boys hyper again," Will joked as he and Dick climbed in to their hideout and handed him their days earnings.
All three boys had managed to make a small amount of money, and Will proudly presented the small half eaten loaf of bread he'd gotten.
Putting the bread with the carrot sticks bag, the boys tucked in to dinner. Percy, Will, and Dick let the boys take most of the food as usual, and barely took anything. The younger kids had to eat more so they could stay healthy.
" Anything interesting happen today?" Dick asked as he chewed half heartedly on a carrot stick.
" All was quiet here, no gang activity," Jason informed in a bored tone.
" I bumped in to Bruce Wayne by accident today," Percy murmured.
Five pairs of eyes locked on to him in disbelief.
" No way," Will stated adamantly.
" It really happened little bro, I bumped in to him and we actually talked! He's even taller in real life than he is in the billboards and photos," Percy retold with a small grin.
" Woah, Percy totally gets to do the coolest stuff," Nico whispered in awe.
Percy smirked at him, but remembered it wasn't so cool when he'd flinched away from the older man. To get his mind off it he started another train of thought.
" Okay, now Nico, Jason, Hal, you three need to go to sleep. Dick, Will, make sure they get there and then Will, it's your turn for lookout tonight," Percy ordered.
The three youngest groaned at being sent to bed, but obeyed orders anyway. Dick laughed at Jason as his ' brother ' flopped on to his space on the carpet.
" Another lookout night," Will sighed as he settled in to position at the edge of the fire escape. His uncanny ability to blend in to the darkness almost made Percy shiver. That kid could hide in the dark almost as well as Nico could, and he didn't even have powers!
It was mid morning, when Percy saw the small, well placed advertisement on the local billboard. He'd almost missed it, but the sight of a flyer that had no graffiti or swear words on it was something Percy had to check out.
" Wanted, a young gardener with experience," Percy read out loud to himself, taking a while to figure out the English with his dyslexia, but getting the general gist of it.
Percy's eyes lit up excitedly, he was young, and he was a good gardener! For some reason he had always been able to garden well, he and his mother had had the most beautiful garden before she had been murdered. Because he could control water, he knew just how much water to give a plant to make it grow vibrant and colorful. Maybe they would hire him?
Then his heart sunk at the address the interviews would be taking place. Wayne Manor. He would never be able to get a job there....
But maybe he could? It would certainly pay well, and his gang of misfit orphans needed money desperately. Just maybe it would work out?
So when he finished his letter delivering rounds, he made his way to Wayne Manor. It was a long walk to reach it on the outskirts of Gotham, but he was fit and strong, and the heavy rain didn't bother him in the slightest.
When it finally came in to sight, his breath was taken away by the sheer size of the place! It was massive, dark and foreboding, but amazing! He allowed water to soak in to his clothes so he wouldn't appear suspicious, and his dark raven hair flopped in to his eyes.
Steeling himself, he used the iron rapper to bang on the door loudly. Hopefully he could get a job here.
When the door opened, an old man stood there with Snow White hair that was balding slightly. He was dressed in a perfectly straightened and ironed suit, with petit white gloves and a perfectly tied tie.
" Good heavens young man, you'll catch your death of cold out there. Come inside," The old man exclaimed, ushering a bewildered Percy in to the huge house.
Percy stared around at his surroundings in awe before the purpose for his visit came back to him.
The old man returned with a large blanket which he handed to a grateful, and shivering Percy.
" Thanks, I'm here for the gardening job interview," Percy said politely, standing as tall as he could, in an effort to look capable.
The old man's eyebrows raised in surprise, and he stared down at Percy.
" Aren't you a little young?" The old man answered gently.
Percy held his ground, and squared his shoulders.
" I need a job, and I have the experience. I know just how to garden, and if you hire me you won't be sorry," Percy vowed.
Now all he had to wait for, was the verdict from the old man.
