(13) I Loved You Then...

(Part 1)

Sunoo woke up to an empty room, the moonlight peeking through the window blinds.

Gazing around, he noticed the TV in the room was on the news channel, talking about a story on cats.

"Hoon must have been watching this. Where is he?"

The door to the room opened, and Sunghoon entered with a bag.

"Oh! Sunoo, you're awake. I went to get some food. Everyone was asking about you."

Sunoo smiled, sitting up against the headboard.

"I'm sure they were."

"Are you hungry?"

"I am."

Sunghoon came to sit in the bed and opened the bag.

Sunoo stared at him, a fond feeling in his heart.

"Remind me, how long are we going to stay here?"

"Three days. Why?"

"I'm going to text my mom. I'll have her meet me at my dorm when we get back."

Sunghoon paused mid fry bite.

"Do you want me to talk to her with you? I can be there."

"No need. I'll do this on my own. My mom is the homophobic one."

"But didn't you say we...or our uncles...needed to talk to our parents?"

"Yeah. But that can be after I brief my mom on the situation. I don't want her to potentially be rude to your parents."

Sunghoon held Sunoo's hand.

"I'm just worried about you, not them. I see how you act around your mom."

"I'll be okay."

The pair continued to eat, the silence between them filled with questions yet to be answered.

Or...did they already know the answer?

--------------------------------------------------------

The next morning Jake was scouring the shallows for seashells when Heeseung came running to him, pulling Ni-Ki along.

"Whoa there, why are you speeding towards me like that?", Jake asks.

Heeseung smiles widely, looking at Ni-Ki.

"Tell him what you told me."

Jake looks at Ni-Ki, who shyly looks away before looking back.

"My buddy system partner asked me on a date."

"WHAT?!", Jake yelled.

"I said the same thing! They've known each other for a day!", Heeseung replied.

"He thought I was cute! And we got along well. He said it felt nice to meet someone from the same country as him.", Ni-Ki said shyly.

The three walked to sit at a table together.

"So how did you respond?", Jake asked.

"Well...I told him it would be nice too."

Jake and Heeseung cheered, high-fiving in the air.

"Our little relationship guru is finally in his own kind of relationship!", Heeseung said loudly.

Ni-Ki laughed.

"You guys are so dramatic. We haven't even had the date yet."

Across the beach, sitting together by the water were Jungwon and Sunoo. Their boyfriends were tackling each other in the ocean over the rights to a piece of seaweed.

"Sunoo, can I ask for your advice?"

"Sure Jungwon, what's up?"

"So I have been thinking recently, about what you guys told us at the aquarium."

"What has you thinking about that?"

"After Jay asked me to be his boyfriend, I was super excited. I was happy and couldn't stop thinking about our future...but I was also a bit scared. It's why I need your advice."

"You need my advice because you're scared? There's nothing to be scared about. Jay likes you a lot."

"He's not what I'm worried about. The story you told us about your uncles...it reminds me of how my father acts."

"Oh..."

"He has no idea I like guys, and I'm terrified to tell him."

Sunoo stares out at the water.

"I understand how you feel. In two days I have to come clean to my mom about Sunghoon."

"You're really doing it?"

"I have to. For my sanity and his. I would never feel free to be with him if I didn't say something."

"I feel that way too."

The two men watched their boyfriends kicking water in each other's faces, and smiled.

"I'll try to gain the courage, and tell my dad.", Jungwon stated.

"You don't have to rush, Jungwon."

"I know. But it's only a matter of time before it comes out anyway."

Sunoo put his hands in the sand, feeling slightly calmed by the texture.

"You're right...it's only a matter of time."

He stands up, Jungwon watching him.

"Wonie, if Sunghoon asks where I went...don't tell him."

"But where are you going?"

Sunoo pauses for a second.

"I have a phone call to make. See you at school."

Sunoo begins to walk away.

"Sunoo wait!"

Jungwon runs up and hugs his friend.

"Be safe hyung. Please?"

Sunoo faces him.

"I will."

With that, Sunoo walks off, headed towards his room.

Jungwon sits back down, watching as Jay dumps a handful of sand into Sunghoon's shorts.

"This will be fine...I hope."

--------------------------------------------------------

Sunoo was packing his bag as he talked on the phone.

"What is so urgent sweetie?"

"Mom please. How fast can you get to Seoul?"

"In about two hours. Sunoo is something wrong?"

"Yes. Please come here. I need to talk to you."

"It must be bad since you moved up our meeting. Do you still want to meet at your dorm?"

"Uh...no. I have a different place. I'll send you the location."

"Okay sweetie. See you there in a few hours."

Sunoo hung up, grabbing his bag. He knew if he told Sunghoon that his boyfriend might attempt to stop him. But he needs to get this off his chest.

He left the room, going the opposite direction down the hall to no one would see him leave.

He exited the resorts living area, and saw a line of people and their motorcycles, ready to drive people around if need be.

"Excuse me sir! Could you bring me to the Cafe next to the children's library in downtown Seoul?"

The man, sporting a black muscle shirt, mullet, basketball shorts, and flip-flops, faced Sunoo.

"That's pretty far kid."

"I'll pay as much as you want. Please?"

The man sighed.

"Get on. I drive fast so hold tight."

Sunoo got onto the motorcycle and placed the spare helmet on.

Within a minute the man drove off with Sunoo on the back of his motorcycle.

Meanwhile, Jungwon was being questioned.

"Listen here little man, if you don't tell me where my boyfriend is, so help me I will toss you in the ocean!", Sunghoon yelled.

"Hoon calm down.", Jay said, "Jungwon, please. Tell us where Sunoo went."

"I can't! I promised not too!", Jungwon responded.

Sunghoon put a hand in his hair frustratedly and looked around.

"I'm going to find him."

He walked off, headed to the resort room.

The boys, including Jake, Heeseung, and Ni-Ki, who all had seen Sunoo leave before, watched him walk off.

Jake whispered to Ni-Ki and Heeseung.

"It's about to get bad isn't it?"

"Oh for sure.", they said in unison.

--------------------------------------------------------

Some time had passed and Sunoo sat in the Cafe he asked his mom to meet at.

He had been ignoring his phone, which was blowing up with calls from Sunghoon and Heeseung.

He sat at the table, holding his hands together.

"Sweetie?", a woman said.

"Mama!"

Sunoo saw his mother enter and got up to hug her.

"What is going on honey? I drove like a maniac to get here.", she said.

"Mom...I have something really important to tell you."

"Yes?"

Sunoo took a moment to gather his words.

His eyes wandered around the Cafe, feeling the familiarity of the room he sat in.

He also felt the impending end that occurred moments after their uncles left this very Cafe 30 years ago.

He looked into his mother's eyes.

"Remember Sunghoon? My friend you met at school."

"I do. Why?"

"Mom...Sunghoon and I have been dating."

"What?! Sunoo-"

"I know! But mom, please hear me out-"

"Sunoo you know we can't have that! Look at what happened to your uncle!"

"Mom-"

"He lost his life over loving another man! I will not let that happen to you!"

"He lost his life because people wouldn't let him love another man!"

"He wouldn't have had to worry about that if he never dated Mark!"

Sunoo's eyes started to well with tears.

The memories all flooded his head at once. The beach getaway, the apartment, the birthday celebration...

...the anger.

"It's people like you...it's your fault!", he yelled.

"What?", she said.

Sunoo let the tears fall as he stood up.

The voice that came from him didn't sound like himself...it sounded as if another person was speaking through him.

"You told them about us!", he yelled, "That's why Mark left me! That's why he died! You did this!"

Moms gaze softened, from anger to remorse.

In that moment, she realized exactly what was happening.

"Sweetie..."

"Don't call me sweetie! You...are the reason we didn't get to live! You...are the reason this has to end."

"What has to end? Sunoo-"

"That's not my name..."

As the realization hit Mom, she reached a hand out.

"Haechan...please leave my baby alone. Why hasn't your spirit moved on? Why mess with my child?"

He turned around to face her.

She saw her sons face, yet could hear nothing but her brothers anger.

"You couldn't leave me alone. My boyfriend was taken from me...because of you. So now...I'm taking your love too."

He turned around, walking out of the Cafe.

Mom quickly grabbed her bag, attempting to run after him.

But when she got outside, he had already disappeared.

"Sunoo! Sunoo!", she yelled, "...my baby..."

-------------------------------------------------------

Sunghoon was thoroughly freaking out at this point.

"I'm about to lose my shit. In around twelve seconds."

"Calm down Sunghoon, I'm sure he's okay.", Jungwon said.

"You shut up!"

Jungwon got quiet, hiding behind Jay.

The six boys had gathered in the SunSun resort room, realizing Sunoo was gone.

"I'm going to try again."

He picked up his phone, calling Sunoo one more time.

To his shock, the phone was picked up.

"What?", the voice answered.

Sunghoon immediately recognized the voice, freezing in his place.

"Uh...Sunoo what's wrong with your voice? Are you okay?"

"No. I'm not Sunoo. You should be able to tell."

The voice echoed in his ears, and in the ears of the other men in the room.

Sunghoon felt something take over in his mind, the look in his eyes shifting.

"Haechan? What are you doing?"

The other men noted the change in voice.

"Honey...you...you left me. You left me. We could have been happy but no...you died and I had to watch..."

Jay held Jungwon's hand.

"I always knew something was off with them...but I didn't think they were possessed.", he whispered.

"Be quiet Jay.", Jake said, hitting him on the back of the head.

Sunghoon, his mind overtaken by the spirit of his uncle, Mark, spoke into the phone.

"I'm sorry sweetie. There was no way out...I loved you and they were going to keep us apart."

"They did...they did keep us apart...and now I'm going to keep these two apart."

"What?"

"Our nephews. We couldn't be happy! So why do they get to be happy!"

"Haechan please...don't hurt him."

"I'm at our apartment Mark....remember? The last place we were together. It's going to be the last place he lives too."

The line was hung up, and silence fell over the room.

"He...he's going to kill him...", Ni-Ki said, "What do we do?!"

Sunghoon, now Mark, looked at the boys.

"Tell whoever is over this trip for you all that I have to go. I need to save that boy...for my nephew."

He runs from the room, leaving everyone else standing there.

Heeseung stood at the doorway.

"You think he'll get to him in time?"

"I hope so...", Jake responded, "History can't repeat itself like this."

"Should we follow him?", Ni-Ki asked.

They all looked at him.

"I'll take that as a yes. Come on, I saw a van down the beach."

"But we don't know where the apartment is.", Jungwon said.

"You don't. But my friends, I am Nishimura Riki, relationship guru and research extraordinaire. An event like that had to be in the news back then. Let's look it up on the way there. Go!"

The boys all left the room as quickly as possible.

No one expected the day to pan out as it had so far.

All they could hope is that the day wouldn't end for Sunoo and Sunghoon as it ended for Mark and Haechan 30 years ago.

But time could only tell.

And as the boys would come to realize, they had ran out a long time ago.
