Chapter Twenty-One
"I guess you were right," Jimin shouted at Jungkook over the din. "Another drink has definitely helped him focus on something else."
Taehyung sighed as the three watched a drunken Yoongi conversing with an equally drunken Kim Seokjin. Yoongi was laughing loudly, clearly enjoying the attention Seokjin was showering him with.
"Do you think this is a bad thing?" Jungkook nervously asked Taehyung.
Taehyung shrugged. "I certainly don't think it's necessarily a good thing."
Jungkook nodded and Jimin shook his head.
"Should we intervene?" Jimin asked.
Taehyung just shrugged again. Part of him thought that yes, they should. Yoongi was in no state to be getting involved with anyone, especially someone as notorious as Kim Seokjin, tonight. But part of him thought that this might be exactly what he needed after the disturbing incident of rejection he'd just experienced earlier.
"Let's just wait a little longer and see where this goes."
Jimin and Jungkook nodded, silently agreeing with Taehyung.
Everyone was shocked at what had just transpired over the past half hour. Kim Seokjin, the extremely famous idol, had recognized Yoongi from when Yoongi had been his server. This surprised everyone enough on its own, but then he'd invited Yoongi to join him and his entourage over drinks, and the three others were shocked. As they'd both gotten drunker, Seokjin was suddenly treating Yoongi like royalty, as though he was actually interested in him or something.
"I mean, Yoongi's a good looking guy," Jungkook said suddenly. "Why wouldn't he catch someone's eye? Famous people are still people, ya know?"
"You really think he's interested in him, though?" Jimin asked. "I mean, yeah, Yoongi's great. But don't famous people usually stick with other famous people?"
"Maybe he just craves normalcy," Taehyung reasoned.
The three continued watching, still confused and unsure of what to think or do.
Suddenly, Seokjin's phone rang, and he looked at it confusedly. His eyebrows rose and he glanced at Yoongi, who hadn't seemed to notice the distraction. Seokjin leaned over to him, whispered something in his ear, then excused himself. The three friends watched as he exited the bar just as he answered the phone.
They looked back over at Yoongi, who was now chatting with who appeared to be Seokjin's right hand man. The look on Yoongi's face was one of pure joy. He was clearly relishing the attention. For what seemed like the hundredth time that night, Taehyung sighed. He was nervous that his friend would get hurt.
"He'll be fine," Jungkook said. "The attention seems to be a good thing – "
"Yoongs is sensitive," Taehyung interrupted. "We don't know anything about Kim Seokjin. He could be a man whore for all we know! And if Yoongs is just a one night thing for him..."
Jimin's eyebrows rose. "Yoongi wouldn't have a one night stand, would he?"
Taehyung shook his head. "But if he thought it was more serious than that..."
"Like, if he thought Seokjin was genuinely interested..."
Taehyung nodded. "I wouldn't be surprised if he gave in."
Jungkook's eyes widened. "Yeah, I think we should put a stop to this."
Taehyung nodded. "Right now."
The three friends stood and begin to head toward Yoongi. They had almost reached him when the bar door opened again, and Seokjin reentered. He was obviously upset, but had a hard look of determination in his eyes. He sauntered back over to the table, turned the chair Yoongi was sitting in around to face him, and hauled Yoongi up out of it by his arm. Yoongi looked up at him, confused.
"Seokjin – "
Seokjin then grabbed the front of Yoongi's shirt, pulled him toward him, and crashed their lips together.
Taehyung, Jungkook and Jimin all froze.
Yoongi struggled for a moment, but Seokjin didn't relent. Eventually, Yoongi gave in, melting into the kiss as Seokjin deepened it. It didn't take long until it was a full on make-out session, and Seokjin's entourage began cheering, egging it on.
Yoongi's friends watched, eyes wide and mouths agape. None of them knew what to do; even Taehyung, who was so concerned about his best friend's well being. The whole situation was so shocking, none of the three of them could even bring themselves to move.
It only took one quiet whimper, however, to shake Taehyung out of his trance. Yoongi was trying to back off from Seokjin, but Seokjin wasn't letting him. Yoongi began to struggle slightly, and Taehyung sprung into action.
He surged forward and pushed Seokjin as hard as he could. Seokjin stumbled to the side and Yoongi fell to his knees, chest heaving for breath.
Taehyung helped him stand, then pulled him away from the group. He led Yoongi to the door.
"Pay the tab, then come to my place," Taehyung told Jimin quickly, who nodded and immediately scurried toward the bar. Taehyung and Yoongi then hurried out the door.
Jungkook stood stock still, the only one who didn't have a task to do. He simply stared at Seokjin, who met his eyes after Taehyung and Yoongi had disappeared. Seokjin smirked as he wiped his mouth, then turned away from Jungkook. He sat down and immediately began talking to his friend as though nothing had happened.
"C'mon," Jimin said, shaking Jungkook's shoulder. "Let's go."
Jungkook threw once last shocked glance at Seokjin, then followed his friend out the door. They rushed to Jungkook's car and began to head to Taehyung's apartment.
In Taehyung's car, Yoongi was reeling.
"W-What just happened?" he said. "Why..."
"Yoongs, it's okay. That guy's a jerk."
"But he – "
"He doesn't like you, Yoongs. You were obviously upset when he got there, and he knew it. You were an easy target."
"Then why would he – "
"I don't know," Taehyung said.
Yoongi sat there, confused and upset. "H-He gave me his number."
Taehyung's head snapped to the side. "What?"
Yoongi nodded. "I-I don't think he was using me. I think he was inter – "
"He wasn't interested," Taehyung interrupted.
"Who are you to say that?" Yoongi suddenly demanded. "How do you know that? What, am I not good enough for someone famous?"
"What?" Taehyung asked incredulously. "That's not what I mean at all, Yoongs."
"I'm going to call him," Yoongi said, pulling out his phone. "I have to apologize – "
"For what?" Taehyung asked, trying to swipe Yoongi's phone out of his hand. Yoongi held it away from him.
"For your actions! You had no right to do that!"
"You were trying to get away from him!"
Yoongi glared. "I couldn't breathe. But otherwise, I was perfectly fine! I liked it! I wanted to continue!"
Taehyung stared out the windshield in shock. "Yoongs – "
"I want to go back."
"No."
"Then let me out. I'll go back on my own."
"Yoongs! No!"
"Then take me home!" Yoongi suddenly yelled, startling Taehyung.
"Yoongi – "
"At least someone wanted me!"
Taehyung paused. Silence hung in the air. After a few long moments, Taehyung glanced at Yoongi. There were tears in his eyes.
"I like Namjoon!" Yoongi suddenly cried out. "Okay? Fine! I like him! But he doesn't like me, but at least someone does!"
Taehyung shook his head. "Why do you think Namjoon doesn't like you?"
Yoongi snorted. "He was weird all night tonight, and then he just couldn't wait to get away from me! He just up and left me at the bar by myself, with no explanation. Obviously he doesn't even want to be around me!"
"Yoongi, I think – "
"You think a lot of things, and I'm sick of it. You've been going on and on for weeks, saying Namjoon likes me back. But you're wrong! And you were wrong in thinking I wanted Seokjin to stop! So just shut up!"
Taehyung, whose mouth had been hanging open during Yoongi's outburst, snapped his mouth shut. He glanced at Yoongi again, but Yoongi was staring out the window. His arms were crossed over his chest and he was very determinedly not looking at his friend.
"Yoongs, I'm sorry. But – "
Yoongi huffed in interruption, but said nothing further.
"Let's go back to my place and call Hobi," Taehyung said. "I think there's just been a big misunderstanding with Namjoon. And – "
"I don't want to do anything other than go back to the bar."
Taehyung sighed. "Fine. I'll just call Hobi now on my own."
"Fine, and I'll call Seokjin."
Taehyung scoffed, and Yoongi finally threw him a glance. There was fire in his eyes. The two friends were at a stalemate.
"I'm not taking you back to the bar. And I'm not taking you home, because I know you'll just go back to the bar by yourself. I'm taking you to my place and that's final."
"You're not my father," Yoongi spat. "I'm a grown ass man. I can do what I want."
"I only want the best for you, Yoongs. You know that."
"Then why won't you let me have this?!"
"Because Kim Seokjin is not what's best for you!"
"How do you know that?!"
Taehyung said nothing more as they finally arrived at his apartment complex. He parked, then turned to fully face Yoongi.
"Guys like him use people, Yoongi, for their own selfish means."
"You don't know anything about him."
"All due respect, Yoongs, neither do you."
"I know what it's like to have his tongue in my mouth, which is a hell of a lot more than you know!"
Taehyung was shocked into silence. Suddenly, Jungkook's car parked next to Taehyung's and Yoongi looked over. His face lit up at the sight of his other friend in the driver's seat. He quickly jumped out of Taehyung's car and hurried over to the passenger side of Jungkook's, just as Jimin was climbing out.
"Take me back to the bar," Yoongi told Jungkook.
Jungkook stared at him. "But – "
"Take me back," Yoongi reiterated, sitting in Jungkook's car and closing the door.
Jungkook looked out the window at Taehyung, who shook his head.
"I don't think that's a good idea, Yoongs."
"I didn't want to stop kissing him. Tae just made assumptions. I want to go back to see him. Take me back."
"But – "
"Are you going to help me out here or not?!"
Jungkook stared, wholeheartedly confused, at Yoongi. "I..." He then glanced out the window again at Taehyung, who shook his head again.
"No."
Yoongi growled in frustration as he threw his hands up in the air. He got out of Jungkook's car and slammed the door.
"Some friends you are!" he shouted at all of them. He then turned and began walking away from them.
Jungkook slowly got out of the car and turned to Taehyung, who was on the phone. Jungkook furrowed his brow, searching Taehyung's eyes for answers.
"Yoongi!" Jimin shouted. "Wait!"
He ran after him, hoping he'd talk to him since Jimin hadn't actually done anything to make Yoongi mad. Yet.
"Go away, Jimin," Yoongi spat as Jimin caught up to him.
"But why? I'll go back to the bar with you."
Yoongi stopped and turned to him. "You will?"
"Sure, why not?"
A smile spread across Yoongi's face. "Thanks, Jimin."
"Hobi wants to talk to you," Taehyung suddenly shouted at Yoongi. Yoongi's smile twisted into a scowl.
"What makes you think I want to talk to him?" Yoongi shouted back.
Taehyung stopped as Hoseok said something else over the phone. His brow furrowed. "You sure?" He waited for an answer, then looked back over at Yoongi.
"He, uh, wants to talk to you about office romances."
Yoongi sighed, but his interest was obviously piqued. He finally, begrudgingly, headed back toward Taehyung and Jungkook.
Without a word to either of them, Yoongi swiped the phone out of Taehyung's hand. "What?" he asked harshly as he put it up to his ear.
"Yoongi? Hey! Listen, about what I told you the other day... Office romances aren't all bad, okay?" Yoongi's face lit up. "I just – "
"So, you're not going to discourage me from pursuing one?"
"No. I just know someone who had a bad experience with one, and I don't want that for you, you know? But I don't think you should entirely rule out – "
"Thanks, Hobi!"
Yoongi scowled at Taehyung as he pushed the phone back into Taehyung's hand. He then turned and began walking away from him again.
Jimin looked back and forth between Yoongi and Taehyung before ultimately taking off after Yoongi again. Taehyung watched as the two began chatting quietly. He then watched as Jimin pulled his own phone from his pocket and made a call.
"What did you say to him?" he asked Hoseok.
"I told him the other day not to pursue any office romances. Someone at our company had a bad experience with one...with an idol. And I didn't want Yoongi to go through the heartbreak they did. So I discouraged him from dating anyone at work." Hoseok sighed. "But I wasn't thinking about him and Namjoon. Just about the artists and idols we work with."
Suddenly, a cab pulled up in front of Yoongi and Jimin, and they both climbed into it. Before either Taehyung or Jungkook could react, the cab sped away.
"Yoongi said something to Namjoon about it tonight, and Namjoon got really upset with me. Since we've all been trying to push them together, I undid all that work by essentially telling Yoongi not to date Namjoon. But, like I said, I was only thinking about... Anyway, so I told him just now not to rule out all office romances – "
"Hobi," Taehyung said, jumping back into his car. He gestured for Jungkook to get in, too, and he did. "You didn't encourage him to date Namjoon just now," he said as he started the engine. "You just encouraged him to date an idol."
