Chapter Seventeen
The next morning, Yoongi was up early, wanting to get to the company early. He wasn't sure what time Namjoon got to work, but he had been told to be there at 8 AM. At the rate he was going, he'd get there at about 7:45, however.
Yoongi entered the building and headed to the elevators. He'd be meeting with Mr. Seong briefly before he began his day. Butterflies fluttered in his stomach as the elevator stopped on the third floor.
The floor receptionist smiled brightly at him. "Mr. Min?"
Yoongi nodded. "Please, call me Yoongi."
"Yoongi," she corrected herself. "Nice to meet you. I'm Iseul."
"Nice to meet you, as well."
"I'll let Mr. Seong know you're here," she said.
"Thank you."
A few minutes later, Mr. Seong appeared. "Yoongi!" he exclaimed. "Good to see you!"
"You, too, sir."
"Come, let's get some last minute paperwork completed before Namjoon comes to collect you."
Mr. Seong led Yoongi to his office, and Yoongi signed some necessary forms to finalize his employment. After some idle chatting with Mr. Seong, there was a knock at the office's door. Namjoon then peeked his head in.
He grinned at Yoongi before addressing Mr. Seong. "Excuse me, sir. Is Yoongi ready?"
"He is!" Mr. Seong replied. "Have a great first day, Yoongi!"
"Thank you, sir."
Namjoon led Yoongi to the elevators. "Your studio is ready," Namjoon said excitedly. "I can't wait for you to see it!"
Yoongi smiled. "Me either."
They took the elevator to the fourth floor, and Namjoon led Yoongi down the hall. They stopped outside of a simple white door. Namjoon opened it and stepped aside for Yoongi to enter. He did and looked around in awe at all of the equipment.
"Have a seat, take it all in," Namjoon said excitedly. "Now, this studio isn't the greatest in the building, but – "
"But it's mine," Yoongi said quietly.
Namjoon smiled. "Exactly."
Yoongi sat in the rotating office chair and spun around a couple of times. He then stopped in front of the mixing boards and MIDI on the desk. His fingers grazed over all of the switches and knobs. He took a deep breath, then released it with a smile.
"Wow."
Namjoon smiled again. "You like it?"
Yoongi nodded. "This is amazing."
"You won't be assigned any solo projects for probably about a week," Namjoon told him. "You're going to shadow me before that. But don't worry, you'll get to do your own thing soon!"
Yoongi turned to him and smiled. "So, what do we do now?"
"We can go to my studio and you can look over some stuff I've been working on."
Yoongi nodded. "Okay."
Namjoon smiled. "C'mon," he said. "One more elevator ride."
Yoongi followed him, more excitement bubbling up inside. He'd be assisting in projects, starting today. He was borderline giddy.
"So," Namjoon said, making conversation as they headed to his studio. "How did your last shift at the restaurant go?"
"Oh my gosh, you'll never believe what happened!" Yoongi said excitedly. "An idol came in, and I got to serve him."
"Yeah? That is exciting! Who was it?"
"Kim Seokjin!" Yoongi said. Namjoon turned to look at him. "He was so nice, and left me a huge tip!"
"Wow," Namjoon said, a bit flatly. "That's great."
Yoongi beamed at him. "It was awesome. I told him I was going to work for a music company starting today, and he said maybe our paths would cross again, being in the same industry!"
Namjoon nodded. "He's actually an artist here."
Yoongi's head snapped to the side and he gaped at Namjoon. "What?"
"Yeah, he's signed with us. I've worked with him before."
"No way," Yoongi breathed. "So...maybe I will see him again!"
"You likely will," Namjoon confirmed.
"He'd probably never remember me, though," Yoongi sighed. "An idol as famous as him...no way he remembers the little guys."
"Well, if you're ever assigned to work with his songs, he'll get to know you. He actually likes being a part of the production process. Writes some of his own stuff, too."
Yoongi grinned dreamily and never noticed the slight scowl on Namjoon's face. "Anyway," Namjoon abruptly changed the subject. "Here we are."
Yoongi looked up at the door they'd stopped in front of. He remembered the "Rkive" written on a small sign hanging on it. Namjoon then opened the door and let Yoongi get a look inside this time.
"Whoa," he said, genuinely impressed. "Yeah, this place is a hell of a lot fancier than my studio."
"You'll have one like this eventually."
"You think so?"
"Definitely."
Yoongi beamed at Namjoon, and Namjoon's mood suddenly improved. "Come on in," he said, stepping aside for Yoongi to enter. He did, turning in a circle to take everything in. He then settled on the couch along one of the walls.
"This place is unbelievable," Yoongi said. "It's so cool to see all of the tech one needs to mix and compose. I never dreamed I'd see so much, let alone get to work with it." He smiled. "My own little set up at home is severely lacking," he then said with a chuckle.
Namjoon smiled at him. "Well, you've done wonders with that little set up," he said. "Imagine what you're gonna be able to do now. We're all excited to hear it!"
Yoongi blushed. "I hope no one's building it up too much. I don't wanna not be able to live up to it."
Namjoon shook his head. "We all believe in you."
"Yo!" A voice sounded from outside the door, followed by a knock. "Is Yoongi here yet?"
"Come on in, Hobi," Namjoon called. "We're both in here."
The door opened and Hoseok entered. "Hey, Yoongi! How ya doing?"
"Good," Yoongi said. "Just trying to take it all in."
"It's all pretty great, right?"
"So great."
"Well, I know it can also sometimes be overwhelming, so if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to let me know. I'm just down the hall."
"Thanks," Yoongi said earnestly. "I'll definitely keep that in mind."
Hoseok smiled. "Well, I'm gonna head that way," he told them. "Wanna join me for a few minutes so you can see where my studio is, Yoongi?"
"Um, sure," Yoongi agreed. Namjoon turned and smiled at him.
"Go ahead," he said. "I'll wait for you."
Yoongi nodded, then followed Hoseok out the door.
"Here's where the brilliance happens!" Hoseok exclaimed as they approached another door a ways down the hall. This one looked just like Namjoon's except the little sign on the door said, "Hope World".
Hoseok opened the door and Yoongi peeked in. He sighed dreamily. "So cool, just like Namjoon's."
Hoseok smiled. "You'll get yours soon enough."
"Oh, I already have mine. It's just down on the four – "
"No, I mean up here," Hoseok said knowingly. Yoongi smiled.
"I certainly hope so."
"So now you know where I live," Hoseok said as they turned to head back to Namjoon's studio. "Now, let me give you a little bit of advice."
"Okay..."
Hoseok slung an arm around Yoongi's shoulders. "Don't get involved in any office romances."
Yoongi furrowed his brow. "What? You think I would?"
Hoseok shrugged. "This company doesn't just work with musical people behind the scenes. They have artists signed here, too."
"I know that," Yoongi said.
"Idols," Hoseok continued. "Pretty people, in other words. And it can be very distracting when their world collides with ours."
"I still don't understand."
"You will," Hoseok said. "You'll be assigned artists and their songs. And you'll have to work closely with some of them. Just, stayed grounded. Don't get distracted or you'll end up like..." Hoseok abruptly cut himself off. Yoongi furrowed his brow.
"Like...?"
Hoseok sighed. "Listen, just trust me on this, okay?"
"I do. I mean, I guess it makes sense. But who are you – ?"
"I shouldn't have said anything about that in particular," Hoseok said. "Look, it's not my business to tell. Just know there's a cautionary tale here. And just trust me on that."
Yoongi nodded, still curious, but he could tell Hoseok wasn't going to divulge any further. Maybe he could ask Namjoon if he knew who Hoseok was talking about.
"Here he is!" Hoseok chirped, opening Namjoon's door and gently pushing Yoongi over the threshold. "Hey, maybe we can all get lunch together later!"
"Sounds like a plan," Namjoon said. "Bye for now, Hobi."
Hoseok waved as he closed the door. Yoongi turned back to Namjoon. He really wanted to ask him to elaborate on what Hoseok had said, but he noticed Namjoon already had all of his music programs pulled up on his various computer screens, and he got distracted by them. "So, what do you want me to do?" he asked.
Namjoon and Yoongi spent the morning working on a song Namjoon was almost finished with. Yoongi was able to provide a bit of insight and a couple of suggestions. Once lunch time finally rolled around, Namjoon had completed the song.
They met up with Hoseok in a small cafe just outside the building. The lunch hour went by fast, but Yoongi was okay with that. He was excited to get to work again. He'd never been around the type of equipment the studios had, and he was eager to learn how it all worked.
Namjoon decided to take the rest of the day off from his projects and spend time with Yoongi in Yoongi's studio. He helped Yoongi get accustomed to the equipment there, and answered any questions he had. By the end of the day, Yoongi had learned a lot, and Namjoon could tell he was a natural.
"Thanks for everything today," Yoongi said to Namjoon as they both headed out of the building. "I'm really glad to be working with you. You're a wealth of knowledge, and a big help."
Namjoon smiled. "You're a natural, Yoongi. Soon enough, you're not even gonna need me."
Yoongi smiled shyly. "Thanks," he said. "But I doubt that."
Namjoon shook his head. "Maybe some day, you'll be coming after my job."
Yoongi laughed. "I'd never."
"You need a ride home?" Namjoon asked.
"No, I'm fine to take the bus. My place is actually just a couple stops away from here; not far at all."
Namjoon nodded. "If you're sure..."
"I am," Yoongi said with a smile as they parted ways. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"See ya," Namjoon said.
