Chapter Fourteen
Namjoon left his apartment and hurried to the bus stop closest to it. Since he was headed to the bar, he figured maybe he'd indulge a bit this time, seeing as how it was a Saturday night. So there was no point in driving his car there.
As he sat down in a seat on the bus, he wondered if Yoongi was drunk again. He wouldn't judge him if he was. He just wondered what it would be like to be drunk around drunk Yoongi. Then he thought himself a bit odd for thinking that. He shook his head to clear his strange thoughts.
The minute Namjoon walked into the bar and spotted his new friends, he could tell immediately that Yoongi was already drunk. He smirked slightly. Looks like he had some catching up to do.
He decided to hit the bar before he joined the others. He ordered the strongest drink on the menu, then downed it in one go. He quickly ordered another, then headed to the table.
"Namjooooooon!" Jimin exclaimed as he walked up.
"Hey!" Yoongi said excitedly.
Namjoon glanced at Taehyung, who looked a bit defeated. "Hey," he said exasperatedly.
"Hi, guys," Namjoon greeted them all. "Thanks for inviting me," he told Yoongi.
"Yeah, of course!"
Namjoon looked over at Taehyung again. "You need some help here, or are you okay if I indulge a bit, too?"
Taehyung waved his hand. "It doesn't matter," he said. "I can drive you home, too, if need be."
"Do you work tomorrow?" Namjoon asked. Taehyung shook his head.
"Nah, I have a nine to five."
Namjoon nodded. "Okay, well, if you're sure you don't mind."
"No worries."
"I can invite Hobi to come and keep you company in sober solidarity if you'd like."
Taehyung considered this. "I mean, that might be nice."
But Namjoon quickly found out that Hoseok wasn't able to join them. "Sorry," he offered Taehyung. Taehyung sighed only slightly.
"It's okay."
"Let me know if you need me to stop drinking to help you reel these two in," Namjoon insisted. Taehyung smiled.
"Thanks," he said. "But I can handle them."
Namjoon nodded as he took a swig of his drink. "So, how's everyone doing?" he asked Yoongi and Jimin.
"Great now that you're here!" Yoongi said excitedly.
Three very different reactions then occurred at once. Namjoon raised an eyebrow, Jimin gasped with a slight giggle, and Taehyung once again hung his head.
"Thanks," Namjoon told him. "I'm glad you invited me. I needed to get out of the house."
"Anytime!"
"Namjoon, what have you been doing today?" Jimin asked.
"Work, actually," Namjoon said. "I had to take some home with me that I didn't finish yesterday. It's been a difficult song, really trying my patience. I think I finally got it perfected, though."
"Can I hear it?" Yoongi asked.
"Sure, on Monday. Just remind me and I'll play it for you."
Yoongi grinned. "Cool."
Jimin watched their interaction with a grin. "You guys are cute," he suddenly said.
"Jimin," Taehyung warned.
"What? You disagree?"
Taehyung shook his head. "Watch your words, Jimin."
Namjoon looked between them with a furrowed brow. "What's going on?" he asked.
"Oh, Tae's just being a buzzkill tonight," Jimin said. "He's been lame since we got here."
"Gee, thanks, friend."
Namjoon chuckled. "Sounds like you need a drink," he said to Taehyung. "Let me buy one for you."
"Nah, I shouldn't..."
"One drink won't impair your driving."
Taehyung sighed. "Okay," he relented. Namjoon smiled. He then finished his drink in one gulp in order to order another one for himself when he got Taehyung's.
"He's so sweet," Jimin sighed as soon as Namjoon was out of earshot. "Isn't he sweet, Yoongs?"
"Yeah!" Yoongi agreed immediately.
Taehyung nodded in agreeance, but said nothing. He simply waited, saving his voice for when his friends' got them in trouble.
"Here ya go," Namjoon said as he returned, handing a drink to Taehyung. "So, what have you guys been talking about tonight?"
"You're sweet!" Jimin said. Namjoon smiled.
"Thanks," he said earnestly.
"Yoongs agrees," Jimin continued.
"Okay," Namjoon said.
Yoongi nodded fervently, and Namjoon chuckled. "Thanks," he said again. "It's nice to know you don't think I'm an asshole or something."
Yoongi gasped. "I'd never think that!"
"Good to know," Namjoon repeated with another smile.
Namjoon looked over at Taehyung. "I've got some catching up to do, huh?"
Taehyung chuckled dryly. "Yep."
"Well, bottoms up," Namjoon said, finishing up the drink he'd just gotten. "I'll be right back."
Taehyung gaped at him as he walked away. How did he have so many friends that were all experienced drinkers?
When Namjoon returned, he looked at Taehyung again. "I'll slow down," he promised. "I'll take it easy with this one. Let the others start work their magic."
Taehyung shrugged. "You do you," he said. "I'm up for whatever comes our way."
Namjoon smiled. He then turned to Yoongi. "You excited for Monday?"
Yoongi's smile faltered. "Uh, yeah," he said quietly.
Namjoon's brow furrowed. "What's wrong?"
"He's nervous," Jimin interrupted.
"Jimin, let them talk," Taehyung admonished. Jimin scowled at Taehyung.
"No need to be nervous!" Namjoon said to Yoongi. "You'll fit right in, I just know it!"
"Why do I get my own studio?" Yoongi suddenly asked.
Namjoon blinked. "How did you – "
"Tae told me," Yoongi said. Namjoon looked at Taehyung, who shrugged.
"Hobi told me."
Namjoon sighed. "Well, that was kind of supposed to be a surprise," he said, turning to Yoongi again. "But oh well. Yeah, you're getting your own studio. Mr. Seong doesn't want anything to hinder you. He thinks you'll move up quickly. He's really excited about you."
Yoongi blushed. "Yeah?"
"Yeah," Namjoon said with a smile.
"I hope so," Yoongi admitted. "I mean, I want to prove myself, you know? I feel like I can do a good job and – "
"Oh, I know you can," Namjoon interrupted. "Based on the work you've done at home, I think you'll find yourself right at home in a studio."
"I'm so excited," Yoongi blurted. His cheeks flushed again at his admission. "I mean, I've never worked with professional equipment, and I can't wait to try. You know?"
Namjoon nodded. He did know. He used to be just like Yoongi.
Namjoon suddenly started feeling warm, and he realized he was getting tipsy. Perhaps that's why he divulged the next bit of information to Yoongi even though he wasn't really supposed to.
"Can I tell you something else?"
"Sure," Yoongi said.
"It's a secret, so don't tell anyone else at work, okay?"
At the word secret, Yoongi's eyebrows rose. He moved closer to Namjoon. "I won't tell!"
"They've already started building a new studio on my floor for you."
Jimin gasped. "Hobi was right!"
Namjoon looked at him questioningly. "Hobi said he thought the new studio would be for Yoongs!"
Namjoon slapped a hand to his forehead. "Hobi wasn't supposed to know anything about that."
"Oh, he was just guessing," Jimin explained. "But now we know he was right!"
"Well, please don't confirm it for him," Namjoon said. "No one at work is supposed to know. Especially not you, Yoon. So, seriously don't say anything."
"I don't wanna get you in trouble," Yoongi said. "I'll keep it to myself!"
"Thanks," Namjoon said with a sigh of relief.
"So, that's super exciting!" Jimin exclaimed. "See, Yoongs, you're gonna do great there!"
Yoongi smiled shyly. "I guess so."
"Well, I know so," Namjoon told him. "I believe in you!"
"Thanks," Yoongi said, still feeling shy. "As long as you do, I know I'll do well."
Jimin grinned at Taehyung, who silently sighed. While he wanted Yoongi to have conversations like this with Namjoon - where they complimented each other and said cute things - he worried that it might not be so great for those conversations to happen while Yoongi was drunk. But, based on the way Namjoon was beginning to act, Taehyung knew he would soon be just as far gone as Yoongi. So, maybe his friend wouldn't find himself to be as embarrassed if he ever learned he was saying such things to Namjoon tonight.
"I'm gonna get us some more drinks," Jimin suddenly said as he stood. "Talk amongst yourselves!"
He flitted off toward the bar and Taehyung suddenly stood as well. "I'm gonna go make sure he doesn't get into any trouble," he explained before taking off after Jimin.
Namjoon chuckled at Jimin's antics and Taehyung's obvious annoyance. He turned to Yoongi again.
"So, are you – "
The look on Yoongi's face cut him off. Yoongi was sitting there, chin in his hand, staring at Namjoon with a small smile on his face.
"Um, everything okay, Yoon?"
Yoongi blinked. "Oh, uh, yeah," he said, seemingly shaken from a trance. He quickly fell back into it, however, and his small smile returned.
"You have a nice smile, Joonie."
"T-Thanks," Namjoon stuttered a bit, surprised at the compliment.
"I can't stand those dimples," Yoongi continued. Namjoon furrowed his brow and Yoongi quickly explained. "I mean that in a good way!" he insisted. "Like, they get to me, you know?" Namjoon didn't reply. "Fuck, I'm not making any sense, am I?"
Namjoon laughed. "No worries, I know you're not being rude."
Yoongi sighed with relief. "I'd never be rude about those dimples," he said. "They're just really great."
Namjoon felt his cheeks beginning to flush at the compliment. "W-Well, I think you have a great smile, too."
Yoongi's eyebrows rose. "Yeah?"
"Yeah," Namjoon continued. His suddenly felt emboldened as the alcohol continued to make its way through his system. "When you smile really big and your gums show...it gives me goosebumps."
"Goosebumps? Really?"
"Uh, yeah," Namjoon said, feeling suddenly shy about his admission. "It's a good thing, though, you know?"
Yoongi nodded. "Thanks," he said. "I don't have anything cute like dimples, but it's nice to know someone likes my smile regardless."
"It's great," Namjoon insisted. "You don't need dimples. Your smile is radiant on its own."
Yoongi's cheeks flushed. "Thanks," was all he could think of to say again.
The two stared at each other after that, neither knowing what more to say. Both smiled, however, and then their smiles widened when they realized the other was admiring theirs.
"We're baaaack!" Jimin interrupted the staring as he passed a drink to Namjoon. Yoongi felt again as though he'd been shaken from a trance.
"Hey," he said to Jimin.
"Here you go, Yoongs," Taehyung said, placing another whiskey in front of his friend.
"Thanks!"
"So what did you two talk about while we were gone?" Jimin asked.
Namjoon and Yoongi looked at each other. "Um, not much," Namjoon said quickly. "Just, you know, random stuff."
"Yeah, really random," Yoongi agreed.
"Sounds boring," Jimin said. Namjoon chuckled.
"It wasn't actually," he admitted. "It was nice."
"Yeah, really nice," Yoongi again echoed.
Jimin raised an eyebrow and looked at Taehyung, who shrugged. "That's good," Taehyung said.
"So let's get right to it," Jimin suddenly said, and though he didn't know what his friend was about to say, Taehyung somehow knew it wasn't going to be good.
"Jimin," he interrupted. "Remember what I said earlier about watching your words?"
Jimin waved his hand in Taehyung's face. Taehyung slapped it away. "I'm serious, Jimin."
"What do you think about the nickname Joonie?" Jimin blurted out, looking at Namjoon.
Namjoon's cheeks flushed. "Um, well..."
Yoongi had sat up straight at Jimin's question, remembering that he was embarrassed about calling Namjoon that, even though he'd just done it again a moment before. Yoongi looked over at Jimin and narrowed his eyes.
"It's nice," Namjoon admitted. "I...like it."
"See," Jimin said, turning his attention to Yoongi. "I knew he'd be fine with it."
"Jimin," Taehyung warned.
Yoongi looked down, still embarrassed. "I don't know why I called you that," he admitted quietly.
Namjoon shrugged. "It's okay. Like I said, I like it."
Yoongi finally looked up and met his eyes again. "You sure?"
"Yeah."
Yoongi smiled a small smile. "O-Okay," he said. "I-I guess I'll keep calling you that."
"I'd like that," Namjoon said.
Unbeknownst to Yoongi and Namjoon, who didn't tear their eyes from each other, Jimin looked over at Taehyung with a self-satisfied grin. Taehyung just shook his head.
"Say it," Jimin stage whispered to Taehyung.
"Say what?"
"Say I win!"
"Win?" Taehyung asked with a furrowed brow. "What do you mean by win?"
"I won because I knew it would be okay to ask, even though you wanted to stop me."
Taehyung rolled his eyes. "Sure, Jimin, you win."
Jimin grinned. Then he turned his attention back to his other two friends.
"What else should we talk about?" he asked, interrupting Namjoon and Yoongi staring at each other again.
Namjoon shrugged. "What do you want to talk about, Jimin?"
"Let's talk about the two of you!"
Taehyung facepalmed. "Jimin!"
But Jimin pressed on. "You like each other, right?"
Namjoon and Yoongi glanced at each other.
"I mean, yeah," Yoongi spoke first. "He's a nice guy."
"Yeah, exactly," Namjoon agreed.
"Ugh, just kiss already!"
Namjoon choked on his drink. "What?" he asked incredulously.
Jimin grinned at the looks on both Yoongi's and Namjoon's faces. "You two are funny."
"You know what?" Taehyung interrupted. "Maybe it's time to call it a night."
Yoongi looked over at Taehyung. "Already? I'm having a good time, though."
"Yeah!" Jimin exclaimed. "Don't ruin our good time. You're having a good time, too, right, Namjoon?"
"Y-Yeah," Namjoon coughed, still reeling from choking on his drink. "Maybe you should stop drinking, though," he suggested.
"I agree with Namjoon," Taehyung said.
"Well, I don't!" Jimin said defiantly. "In fact, I need another."
"Jimin," Yoongi warned. "You've had enough."
"Well then so have you!"
Yoongi shook his head. "I've had as many as you, but I'm still not drunk enough for your stupid comments."
Jimin gasped indignantly. "Rude!"
Namjoon suddenly burst into laughter. The other three all looked over at him with questioning looks.
"You guys are funny," Namjoon said with a shake of his head. As soon as he did that, though, his eyes widened. "Whoa," he said. "I'm drunker than I thought I was."
"Sounds like you need another one!" Jimin said jovially. "I'll go get it – "
"Nope," Taehyung interrupted, knowing Jimin would sneak one for himself. "I'll get it. You stay here and let these two babysit you."
"Babysit me? They're drunk, too!"
"Compared to you, we're practically sober," Yoongi said. Namjoon burst into laughter again.
"When did this become make fun of Jimin time?"
"Since you started saying stupid shit," Yoongi told him.
"I said no such things!"
Yoongi rolled his eyes. "Whatever you say, Jimin."
"If whatever I say is right, then you two should kiss each other," Jimin said slyly. Yoongi's head snapped up to look at his friend. His eyes were narrowed.
"Shut up, Jimin."
"Yeah," Namjoon suddenly agreed. "I think you've said enough."
Jimin gasped. "Not everyone ganging up on me!"
"Yep," Taehyung said, returning with drinks for both Namjoon and Yoongi. "Everyone."
Jimin crossed his arms over his chest and began to pout like a child. "Whatever," he muttered. "Rude."
Namjoon and Yoongi looked at each other over their drinks and laughed. They then clinked their glasses together before each taking a long sip.
"I'm glad you came out tonight," Yoongi said.
"Me, too," Namjoon agreed. "It's been a while since I've been able to really let loose. This has been a lot of fun."
Yoongi smiled, and Namjoon's heart fluttered. Little did he know that as he smiled back, Yoongi's heart was doing the same.
Taehyung looked between them from his seat off to the side. He smiled to himself, glad that they both seemed to maybe finally be seeing what all the rest of their friends saw; that Yoongi and Namjoon were a great match.
"'M not ready to leave yet," Yoongi said, as the conversation died down.
"Me either," Namjoon admitted.
"That's fine," Taehyung said. "We don't have to go now."
"Well, if I'm not allowed to talk, then I'm bored and wanna go home," Jimin suddenly piped up again.
"You can talk if you stop saying stupid shit," Yoongi told him.
"I don't even know what you're talking about," Jimin said. "I never say stupid shit."
The other three all rolled their eyes. "C'mon, Jimin," Taehyung suddenly said. "Let's go take a look at the jukebox."
"But I wanna – "
"C'mon, Jimin," Taehyung said more forcefully, pulling his friend out of his chair.
As they walked away, Yoongi and Namjoon looked at each other again. "Joonie?"
"Yeah, Yoon?"
"Work won't be too hard, will it?"
"With your skills, not at all."
Yoongi smiled. "You really think so?"
"Definitely."
Suddenly, Namjoon's phone began to ring from inside his pocket. He took it out quickly and looked at it.
"It's Hobi," he said, surprised. He then answered the phone. "What's up, Hobi?"
"Are you drunk?"
"All I said was, 'what's up, Hobi?' You can tell I'm drunk just from that?"
"You're my best friend, Joon. I know you too well."
Namjoon scowled. "What do you want?"
"Just wanted to check on you. Everything okay?"
Namjoon glanced over at Yoongi, who was looking around the room as he sipped his drink. Namjoon smiled. "Yeah, everything's great."
"Sorry I couldn't come out tonight. I had a family thing, and – "
"It's okay, I understand."
"How's Taehyung holding up?"
Namjoon chuckled. "He's a bit exasperated, but otherwise fine."
"You guys aren't giving him a hard time, are you?"
"Yoongi and I aren't," Namjoon said and Yoongi looked over at him. "Can't say the same for Jimin, though."
"Poor guy."
Namjoon chuckled again. "I think he'll live."
He met eyes with Yoongi and winked at him. Yoongi's cheeks immediately flushed, and he looked away.
"Well, don't keep drinking too much, Joon. You don't wanna go wild."
"You mean like you did?"
"Oh hush."
"I promise I won't, Hobi. I better let you go, though. I'm being rude to Yoongi by being on the phone while he's just sitting here."
"How is Yoongi?"
"Good," Namjoon said.
"Just good?"
"Okay, great."
"Has he called you Joonie again?"
"Bye, Hobi," Namjoon said before cutting the call. "Sorry about that," he said to Yoongi.
Yoongi shrugged. "No worries."
"Can I ask you something?" Namjoon suddenly said, feeling braver by the second as he consumed more of his current drink.
"Sure," Yoongi replied.
"Are you seeing anyone?"
Yoongi stared at him, surprised at the random question. "Uh, no," he said. Then he didn't know what to say, and he just blurted out, "Are you?"
"No," Namjoon said.
"W-Why do you ask?" Yoongi asked.
Namjoon shrugged. "Just wondering."
"Okay."
Namjoon internally cursed himself. 'Great going,' he thought. 'Now you've made it awkward.'
"Can I ask you something?" Yoongi asked.
Namjoon was grateful the awkwardness didn't last. "Yeah," he answered.
"Um," Yoongi said, suddenly second guessing whether or not he should ask. "Whatever happened with the guy you were supposed to meet at my restaurant?"
"The guy that stood me up?" Namjoon asked bitterly.
"Um, yeah," Yoongi said. Then, "Nevermind. I shouldn't have asked. That was rude of me."
"It's fine," Namjoon said hurriedly. "The truth is nothing happened. I've never heard from him again."
Yoongi shook his head. "What a loser."
Namjoon stared at him. "Why do you say that?"
"He missed a great opportunity to be with a great guy."
Namjoon felt his cheeks begin to heat up. "Thanks," he said quietly.
Yoongi nodded. "You're better than that guy."
Namjoon smiled. "Thanks," he repeated.
"I mean it," Yoongi said earnestly. "If he can't see how great you are, he's an idiot."
Namjoon suddenly felt a bit embarrassed. "That's...really nice of you to say, Yoon. I appreciate that. Really."
Yoongi smiled, happy he'd made Namjoon happy.
Silence fell over them, but it wasn't uncomfortable. They kept looking over at each other, then looking away when their eyes would meet. Namjoon eventually smiled.
"We're being awkward, aren't we?"
"What do you mean?" Yoongi asked.
Before Namjoon could answer, Taehyung and Jimin suddenly appeared at the table again. "Did you guys hear all my songs?" Jimin asked excitedly.
"Um, no," Yoongi said honestly. "We weren't really paying attention to the music."
"Too engrossed in each other?" Jimin wiggled his eyebrows. Taehyung sighed and pulled him away from the table yet again.
Namjoon laughed. "Jimin is something else."
Yoongi rolled his eyes. "Yeah, something like that."
"What do you think he means by all this suggestive stuff he keeps saying?" Namjoon asked.
Yoongi shrugged, though he knew exactly what Jimin meant. "He's just a weird guy."
Namjoon laughed again. "I think he means well."
"Maybe," Yoongi said, unconvinced.
"Well, do you think maybe we should wrap it up here?" Namjoon asked. "Poor Tae is probably tearing his hair out in his mind."
Yoongi looked at Namjoon regretfully. "I suppose we should because you're probably right."
They both then paused, looking into each others eyes. "I don't really wanna go," Namjoon admitted.
"Me neither," Yoongi replied quietly.
Suddenly, their heads began moving closer to each other, but it didn't last long enough for either of them to register it, because Jimin popped up between them.
"Tae is giving me another chance to sit at the table!"
"It's probably a bad idea, but I'm having trouble wrangling him," Taehyung said as he joined the others.
Namjoon and Yoongi both looked as though they'd been shaken from a trance. "Uh, that's okay," Namjoon said quickly. "We were just saying that maybe we should head out."
"You sure?" Taehyung asked.
"Yeah," Yoongi agreed.
"Boo!" Jimin slurred at the other three. "No fun!"
"You've had your fun, Jimin," Taehyung said exasperatedly. "Let's get going."
The four of them then headed out, with Yoongi and Namjoon falling behind the other two.
"Thanks again for inviting me," Namjoon said.
Yoongi smiled. "Of course."
"We haven't talked a lot this past week," Namjoon continued. "Let's do better about keeping in touch."
Yoongi nodded. "We'll be seeing a lot more of each other come Monday, though."
"Yeah, but I mean beyond work. I'd like to talk to you just to talk, you know?"
Yoongi nodded again. "I'd like that."
"Hey, slow pokes!" Jimin suddenly yelled out the window of Taehyung's car. "Get a move on!"
Namjoon and Yoongi both laughed. "We're coming," Yoongi shouted as the two of them made their way to the car.
