19. It Worked Before...
Blades had never expected to be so grateful to hear the rescue alarm ping through the following morning. He was up and out of his room in a flash, smiling as he saw Boulder and Heatwave exiting theirs. Primus, he was glad to see that red plating up and moving.
"What's the situation?" Heatwave asked as he tapped his comms.
Structure Fire at the Docks. Priscilla answered, Wind's picking up too. Team A, you're up!
"Got it."
"You sure you're up for a rescue so soon, Heatwave?" Boulder asked.
Heatwave nodded, "Systems are saying I'm back to seventy-eight percent functionality. Not fully healed, but enough to do my job... I've missed out on enough rescues. Until we can find Cody and Chase, it's business as usual."
"Alright then."
"What is that noise...!?"
They turned to see the Sodorians stirring from the floor. Though the alarm didn't blare as loudly down in the bunker, it was still quite audible through the ceiling. Gordon had already grabbing a cushion from the couch and was trying to cover his ears with them.
"Emergency alarm." Boulder informed, "We have a job to do."
"Is there a way we can help?" Percy offered.
"Best stay here, kiddo." Heatwave announced, "But you all could watch from the Command Center up there." He pointed to the open door on the second level, "There are screens up there you can watch us from."
"Okay!"
Thomas and Percy were headed for the command center before Sigma Seventeen had even turned back to continue their way to the elevator.
The trio went to the elevator and headed upstairs, and Heatwave grinned. "Those two littles are adorable, wanting to help out. You know that, right?"
Blades and Boulder nodded, "Being useful is in their programming."
The Burnses slid down the fire pole from above, running to their respective partners as they transformed into vehicle mode, with Chief Burns climbing into Heatwave's passenger seat.
Kade seemed to settle into the seat a bit more, giving a grin as he patted the steering wheel. "It's good to have you back, partner."
"Same. Alright Burns Family-"
"Roll to the Rescue!" The rest of the team announced.
"Hey, that's my line."
"And we missed you saying it." Chief Burns replied with a smile.
Guys! Priscilla announced, Fire! Docks! Emergency! I thought the key was to be out in ten seconds or less-
"Alright, alright." Heatwave's engine roared, "Roll to the Rescue!"

Thomas and Percy led the way up into the Command Center, with Edward, James, and Emily all following while the rest just tried to go back to sleep now that the alarm was no longer blaring. "Incredible!" Thomas announced as they entered the room, "Look at all of this...!"
In front of them was a massive console of some sort, adorned with dozens, if not hundreds, of buttons, levers, and switches. Above it was a large screen that showed multiple images that appeared to be moving somehow, showing cars driving, trees bending in the wind, and- most importantly- the image of smoke and flames rising from the Docks.
"Even with knowledge of the technology in this time period," Emily overlooked the console, "How do you know what is what with all of these...?"
"Hmm..." James reached out and touched the moving image of the fire, his eyes widening as it grew larger and more defined from the others. "...Incredible."
Aha!
An image appeared in the bottom, one that showed Priscilla's face as her voice came through a speaker. Cool, I've got remote access to the bunker center!
"Priscilla!" Percy grinned, "How do you make the pictures move?"
"And how are we able to see all of these same places all at once?"
Hmm? Oh! That's just live footage from the security cameras... Right, you're not used to this level of camera. So I'm not like Graham, so the exact stuff about video is still really complicated, but basically there are cameras set up all over the island, and they take dozens of pictures every second and then send them back to the screen here so we can see when and where things move.
"Can you find Boulder, Blades, and Heatwave?" Thomas asked.
Hold on, let me see... Aha! Here we go!
The screen changed in front of them, now focusing on a different street as two vehicles appeared on the screen. Taa daa! Well, there's Boulder and Heatwave, anyway. Blades flies above the cameras usually.
"That's... them? It looks like a tractor and fire truck."
Yeah! They can turn into a bulldozer and fire truck... Have they never shown you before?
The Sodorians hummed slowly, and then shook their heads. "Not that we remember."
Gee, that would be like me going without makeup for a week... Whatever. Yeah, that's them.
They watched as the angles of the images would change when the two would move out of the view of one camera and into the view of another. It then pulled back as they approached the docks, and they watched the humans climb out before the firetruck and bulldozer folded and moved parts aside and back into their bipedal forms.
"Wow..." Percy hummed, leaning a little closer to the screen. "Do you think we could do that?"
I... I'm not sure. You guys weren't cybertronians originally, so it might not be quite the same for you.
"It's impressive, just the same." Edward replied.
Blades then came into view of the camera- now a helicopter that hovered over the docks and appeared to be merely watching rather than helping. Below him were two structures currently ablaze, and while Heatwave unraveled his fire hose, Boulder appeared to be moving other flammable materials out of the range of the flames and sparks...
...Or at least Heatwave would be, if not for something apparently going wrong with his hose. He appeared to be tapping his hose's tip, peering at it.
Hold on a second... Guys? What's going on down there?
Technical difficulties. Graham informed, Heatwave's hose is clogged, looks like.
Clogged. Sure. Heatwave muttered, and then he appeared to give up on using his hose, letting it go limp on the ground and instead raising his hands. The humans and Boulder all stepped back, allowing room for a giant wave of ocean water to rise from the depths behind the firetruck, before it then washed up and over the building. The following plume of steam blinded the camera, before it cleared, allowing them to see the flames out and the building still mostly intact.
Nice work, guys! Priscilla announced.
Thanks, Priss. Kade replied, Though it looks like Heatwave might not have been quite up for physical duty just yet.
Hey. My elemental work did the job, didn't it?
Yeah, but-
We'll discuss this back home. Chief Burns informed, Boulder, Graham, check and make temporary repairs to the hangar until we can get to a proper repair.
Yes, sir.
"Is it always this exciting in the morning?" Emily asked.
Priscilla shrugged, I've only been living with the Burnses for a little bit, but I can say that this island is pretty good at putting itself in danger in one way or another.
"Like Thomas getting into mischief." James teased, tapping the little blue engine on the head.
"Hey! Not my fault I'm curious about things!"
Percy frowned as he looked at the screen, "I hope Heatwave is okay..."
"I'm sure he is, Percy." Edward put a hand to the little green engine's shoulder, "Sometimes... You think you're all repaired, and then something else comes up. Merely a screw loose, you understand."
"I hope so..."

"Hold still."
Heatwave groaned as he was once more sitting on the medical berth, Blades fretting over him. It hadn't even been twenty-four hours since he'd been in here, and now he was back.
"You still put out the fire, Heatwave." Dani encouraged, "The rescue wasn't a complete disaster."
"The rescue isn't what's bothering me..." Heatwave sighed.
Kade patted his partner's leg, "We know. It stinks being stuck on the sidelines."
"Since when do you offer encouraging words, Kade?"
"I can grow...!"
Blades smirked, taking Heatwave's faulty hose and examining it carefully. "Hmm... Seems to be fine on the outside... Hold on."
"GYAH!"
Heatwave cringed as Blades blew a gust of air into the hose, curling up in a reflex to defend his core from some unknown attack. "W-Warn a mech before you do that!"
"Does it tickle?"
"Nnnnrgh...No...!"
"Sure."
Blades' smirk widened a bit, and then he nodded. "Looks like it's not clogged, the interior's collapsed."
"What do you mean?"
"You turned to goop yesterday. Your physical form is still trying to figure out how to be both fluid and solid, I think. So the inner lining of the hose kind of melted a bit on the inside and melded with the other sides."
"So it clogged itself with itself." Kade rolled his eyes, "Great."
Heatwave scrubbed his faceplate with his hands, trying to shake off the feeling he'd gotten yesterday being turned into mush. It had been so weird... He could still feel his body, but there had been a numbness. He could lift his arms, his head, but he couldn't feel his fingers, couldn't pull himself together enough to form fingers. His body had felt like it was slipping on ice, his legs and arms constantly sliding out from under him no matter how hard he tried to keep them under him.
Though he would never admit to it and already knew the others probably already knew, he'd been terrified the whole time... Trying to not just collapse into nothing... to let the numbness win.
"Heatwave."
Blades' fingers snapped in front of his optics, catching the firetruck's attention once more. "You okay? You spaced out."
"F-Fine... Just...thinking."
"I can see that... You wanna talk about it?"
"No."
"Okay..."
"Do you want to talk about that?"
"What?"
"You know what."
"Erm... No, I don't know."
Heatwave looked up to the copter, his brows furrowing. "Do you wanna talk about why you got all weird yesterday when I mentioned Chase?"
Blades' optics widened, and then he rubbed his arm, looking away. "I... I don't."
"Guys. You need to be honest." Dani remarked, "Keeping secrets isn't going to help anybody."
"I know, I know...!"
Blades walked away, covering his own faceplate with his hands. He slumped back against the wall, helm tilted upward to look at the ceiling before the words spilled out rapidly. "...Chase was hearing Arson calling for help and I didn't believe him that it might actually be Arson but then you said you heard Chase, which might mean he really was hearing Arson which means that Arson might be alive out there somewhere and I didn't want to tell you guys anything because I didn't want to get your hopes up 'kay...!?"
Heatwave felt like his energon processor had fallen into his heel struts. Arson... Alive? Was it possible? He gripped the table's edge a little tighter, "...Where was he?"
"That's the problem, I don't know!"
Blades pulled his hands down, "You know Chase had been having nightmares... Well, the morning before the attack, he asked me to put him in one of the stasis pods so he could get a real recharge without being woken up by a nightmare, but when he came out, he was all in a whirl about how Arson was in trouble and we needed to go rescue him, but neither of us know where this supposed Arson was or what was going on." He rubbed his temples as his orange aura from before began to appear. "...I told him to keep it a secret for now until we had more information, and more proof it wasn't just a dream... But then... Everything happened all at once."
Heatwave closed his optics, "I...I heard Chase calling my name... But that was it... He sounded a little frantic, but if he knows what happened to me, then... Maybe he was just desperate to hear me respond so he'd know I was alright."
"He must be calling you the same way you called him, Blades." Dani surmised, "When you, Graham and Cody were all trapped in the cave."
Blades' optics widened, and he smacked his forehead. "Of course...!"
"Blades, you've done it before." Heatwave suggested, "Do you think you could... You know... Call Chase back?"
Blades' brows furrowed, "...I can try."
