"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits, necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.
To quote from Whitman, 'O me! O life! Of the questions of these recurring. Of the endless trains of the faithless. Of cities filled with the foolish... what good amid these? O me! O life!?'
Answer: That you are here. That life exists – and identity. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?"
This quote is from my favourite movie called Dead Poets Society, and for me it embodies the meaning and purpose of poetry itself. –

A 20 year old poet, pursuing a degree (and hopefully a fruitful career, too) in Genetics.
Although I envision a lifelong career in research for myself, I believe I will always retain my passion for poetry.
There is no specific time that I can pinpoint to when I started writing poetry. It started with me rhyming words and eventually using those words to write about things that bother my brain.
I wasn't always into reading poetry but I must credit my teacher from college, who introduced me to some great poets like Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, and many more. She also instilled in me a life-long love of reading poetry and finding meaning in it. I have a huge list of favourite poets, which would be too long to post here, but my favourite poem is Separation by W. S. Merwin, and it goes like this:
You absence has gone through me
Like thread through a needle.
Everything I do is stitched with its colour.
I am very selective in my music choice, and because I draw inspiration from the songs I listen to, I don't really like mainstream pop music (but I'm not a hater so I don't mind it if it's playing). My current favourites to listen to while I write are Ben Howard, Daughter, Hozier, and Bon Iver.
I find my head buzzing at night with words collected in my head throughout the day, so I mostly end up writing at night-time. I write a lot whilst travelling as well, simply because I love the changing scenery. I don't have any particularly favourite genres to write in, but I like experimenting with themes of life and death in general.
The idea of collaborating for a poem unnerves me a little, mainly because I have never done it and somewhat because of the fact that I mostly write poetry for myself, so the idea of sharing the experience of writing a personal poem unsettles me. However, I wouldn't be averse to the idea if it was for a good cause.
I haven't been published, but I would definitely like to be some day. I am in no rush for that, yet. I do, however, love the idea of Poets Pub, and would like to take this opportunity to thank Bella and Bill for giving poets a platform to share their work. It's providing great exposure to young and upcoming poets, and I am absolutely in love with the Theme Challenges.
Lastly I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read, if you have gotten this far, and also if you have checked out any of my poems on Poets Pub or at my own profile. I really appreciate it. If you want to ask anything about me or my poetry, feel free to drop me a line!
