Before we get into the actual story, I'd like to give you guys a heads-up. Those of you familiar with my writing know that I'm awfully fond of giving Sheik a leading role. Due to this, I think it's only fair that I clear up any confusion about Sheik's gender right away just so I don't get any debates in the comments. 

Sheik is separate from Zelda and is male. Please respect my decision and don't make nasty comments regarding this topic, okay? Okay. Cool.
