Chapter 8 So It Begins

Your body shifted feeling warmth against your skin as your arms laid lazily around something. Your mind was foggy last night not quite playing in your mind as you peeled your eyes open from the fact that there was a light burning your lids. You looked around wondering where you were until last night, at long last, washed into your mind.

You flushed realizing you were holding Phoenix nested at his side your limbs almost all tangled together. He snored a bit his chest rising and falling with rhythm and you almost wanted to watch. You sighed a bit looking to the window he had in his room your eyes focusing on the building that reflected the sun onto it. You wanted to sleep again, stay here curled up to his side, but with the sun shining like that and being too lazy to get up you were content in the fact you couldn't sleep again. Your eyes closed a bit just wanting to focus on Phoenix's gently breaths and slight snores until your mind clicked.

"COURT!" You shot up with a cry trying to untangle your limbs from Phoenix's. Phoenix opened his eyes groggily confusion written on his tired face.

"Huh?..." his voice was slow as you finally unlatched trying to scurry to the end of the, huge, bed. "What's going on..." he rubbed his eyes wincing at the bright sun reflected against a building's windows into his room.

"Court! Court!" You didn't have time to use an actual sentence just saying court to him as you tried to rush to the door nearly falling on a book and slipping on some paper as you threw the door open hastily. Phoenix didn't seem to register the words just yet sitting up slowly with his mind turning its gears until finally he understood.

"COURT!!" He shouted after you and to anyone else you both looked almost crazy dashing around. You tried your best to get your routine done as fast as you could taking the fastest shower you could think of drying your hair as fast too. You threw on a suit buttoning up your blouse as you rushed out of your room brief case in one hand as you started to button your suit jacket. Phoenix was now fully dressed hair fixed the way he liked it now rushing about getting all his papers together.

What a morning this was turning out to be, you both were rushing around like maniacs and you just hoped you'd make it to the court house on time.

"Forget your papers I've got everything let's just go!" You grabbed Phoenix's arm as he still attempted to stuff papers into his own brief case.

"But!-" he wanted to complain but found no time to as you pulled him out of there apartment making sure you had your key and then ran as fast as you could in heels. You laughed unable to help it as you raced down the steps, instead of waiting for the elevator, Phoenix hot on your heels a laugh leaving him as well.

You felt like a kid who was late to school rushing to get to the bus as you hastily rushed to the apartments lobby and out the door to the street. Phoenix panted a bit laughing breathlessly even still as you tried to flag down a cab laughing with him. You were thankful you were able to get a cab sliding in as fast as you could trying not to shout your location to the poor driver who just nodded and drove off. You panted relaxing against the back of the seat panting more after relaxing and took one look at Phoenix who looked just as breathless as you had. And then suddenly you both laughed again.

It was a nice feeling laughing with him, even if you didn't like being late it was worth it in a way. You hadn't gotten a call from maya yet which was good it meant she wasn't there yet and there was a chance you still had time to get there. The laughter died down both you and Phoenix gasping for air still slightly snickering at how both of you rushed around.

"Hey-um-" you decided to speak finally turning to face him as he looked at you. "Thanks again...for last night.." you trailed off blushing a bit unaware he was too. Phoenix looked at you with a beating heart his eyes looking away while he took the opportunity to rub the nape of his neck again.

"Ah! Don't mention it! Happy to help.." he trailed off to look out the window and then there was a silence between you both. You stared at him after looking away your self looking over his expression until finally smiling a little, gathering your courage you pressed a kiss to his cheek making it hasty so he didn't have time to react. Phoenix jumped shivering as a deeper blush crossed his face nearly reaching the tips of his ears. "W-wha-what was that-that for?"

"For being sweet obviously" you smiled at him trying not to play with your fingers nervous, or twist the fabric of your dress (pants/skirt) in your hands.

"O-oh.." Phoenix pressed his lips together like he was trying not to say something stupid. You felt your heart skip in your chest and opened your mouth to say something else only to have the cab come to a stop in front of the grand court house. You paid for the fare letting your self slide against the cushions of the seats to get out taking Phoenix's hand standing to your feet wobbling from your heels against the pavement. The door closed behind you and you walked into the court house with Phoenix. It was always bristling with life, but today it was different.

The press were here snapping pictures of everything they could for the news trying to find powers amongst the crowd. Security pushed the press back as you and Phoenix slipped through in an attempt to get the the waiting lobby.

"Mr.Wright Mr.Wright!"

"Ms.(L/N) Ms.(L/N)! Answer some of our questions!"

"As Will Powers lawyers do you think he did it?"

Suddenly you and Phoenix were swarmed by reporters trying to push your way through to get at least to the empty hall the police officers were  keeping them all away from. It was hard to navigate people pushing you shouting in your ear but you kept moving.

"No comment!" You spoke loudly for the both of you trying to be free of this ocean of bodies. Some how you lost Phoenix your eyes wide as his hand suddenly slipped from yours and you heard him shout your name. But where he was you couldn't tell. You just hoped he at least made it to the hallway with so many people it was hard to navigate. You struggled to push through until jumping feeling a hand on your lower back as the press parting from you and some one else.

"Ms.(L/N) will be taking no more questions. Save them for after the trail" the voice was familiar but you didn't dare look just taking the opportunity to slip to the front and get to the hall seeing Phoenix looking at you relived. Then he looked to your side and you feared the worst from his expression. You bit your lip moving from the touch to stand by Phoenix to see Edgeworth staring down at you with narrowed eyes.

Gumshoe was right he had been crying, they were a tad bit red and you found your breathing catching in your throat.

"Thank you" you didn't want to speak too much, you felt tears wanting to weld in your eyes now.

"You're...welcome..." Edgeworth looked away clutching his hands into fists. He looked like he wanted to say something but was holding back, from Phoenix's hard stare or from the fact that he was just there you weren't sure. But you don't think you wanted to hear him speak. Your fears had been confirmed edgeworth was prosecution, and you didn't want to face him again.

"If you'll excuse us we have to wait for our client" You wanted to turn away after you spoke but your feet were glued to the floor staring into the familiar eyes.

"Yes...go right ahead...good luck" Edgeworth shifted on his feet and you looked away. Neither of you move, that was until Phoenix took your hand gently making you turn.

"Yeah, thanks" Phoenix spoke for you pulling you with him down the hall leaving your eyes lingering on Edgeworth before you looked away with a deep breath. Stay strong stay strong. Court would be starting soon.

"The court is now in session for the trial of Mr. Will Powers" the judge talked finally banging his gavel down to cease the chatter that filled the court room. You stood beside Phoenix while he stood at the desk Powers sitting in a chair close to you both and maya not too far watching with excitement lighting up in her eyes.(After all this time she got to watch you and Phoenix fight with out either of you being in danger!).

"The prosecution is ready, your honor" Edgeworth spoke from across the way his eyes looking at the judge until they looked at you. You refused to meet his stare.

"The defense is ready, your honor" Phoenix spoke up pressing a hand to the desk with the other on his hip parting his blue suit jacket.

"Very well. Mr. Edgeworth, your opening statement, please." The judge looked to Edgeworth who cleared his throat in response.

"The prosecution will show the court that at 2:30 PM on October 15, the defendant, Mr. Will Powers, killed fellow actor Jack Hammer at Studio One of Global Studios. It is impossible for anyone else to have committed this heinous crime. The evidence presented during the trial will all point to this fact." Edgeworth pressed his hands against the table after speaking.

"Hmm. I see. Very well, I would like to move on to your testimony. Mr. Edgeworth, the prosecution may call its first witness." The judge nodded approvingly.

"First, I would like to call a familiar face, Detective Gumshoe, to the stand." Edgeworth directed his attention to the witness stand as Gumshoe walked up smiling broadly at the court. He seemed so pleased with himself. "Detective, if you would briefly describe this case to the court?"

"Yes sir! I'll explain with the guidemap here. To understand this case, it's important to grasp the layout of the studios, see? This here is the Employee Area. The actors did a run-through of their action scenes during the morning here. This is the main gate to the studios. The security lady that works at the studios was here at 1:00 PM on that day. Past the security station there is a gate, see? Past that are the studios. And here it is... Studio One." Gumshoe was showing around the map pointing to everywhere he spoke of before continuing. "This is the scene of the murder, where the body was found! Now, on the day of the murder, October 15, there were only three people here. The victim, Jack Hammer, the defendant, Will Powers, and a young woman, the production assistant. All the production staff were in the Employee Area until noon. Then after lunch, the victim, Jack Hammer, went to Studio One. Right after that, at 1:00 PM, the security lady got to the guard station." There was a pause like he was taking a breath. "Now, jump ahead to later that day... 5:00 PM. The production staff came to Studio One to perform a rehearsal. Needless to say, the rehearsal was cancelled... The time of death was 2:30 PM. The "Samurai Spear" found lodged in the victim's chest was the murder weapon. That's the case, in brief. Anyone like to hear that again?"

You paused looking at Phoenix raising a brow to see if he wanted to hear it again, he didn't seem like he wanted to just faintly nodding to himself.

"So the murder weapon was a "spear"? How... medieval!" The judge seemed shocked, but honestly you figured it was a bit of an act, things like this must happen in all sorts of cases.

"Your Honor. This case is quite simple if you ask one question: And that question is: "What did the security lady at the guard station see?"" Edgeworth stared at the judge but you caught his eye once or twice. It was hard not to, especially when this was the first you've seen of each other after Phoenix's trial.

"Understood" the judge nodded with a slight hum.

"Let's call this security officer to the stand!" Edgeworth had dismissed Gumshoe letting him walk off the stand to let Oldbag take his place. She smiled at the court for a minute. "Will the witness declare her name?"

"Hmm? My, aren't you a handsome fellow! I'm afraid I'm a bit flustered!" Oldbag waved a hand in front of her face and you felt your eyes twitch a bit, something Edgeworth noticed(could it be you still loved him?).

"Y-your name please." Edgeworth wasn't too pleased with how Oldbag seemed to be coming on to him.

"Oh, dearie! No need for you to be embarrassed! Just call me "grandma."" Oldbag flashed a smile at Edgeworth and you found your self gripping the table a bit looking away with a bit of a disgusted expression. It was just strange! You didn't want to shame people on what they were into sexually but this was a little to far!(honestly why would anyone want to have some one their interested in call them grandma?!) or maybe you're just over thinking and that's not what she meant.

"YOUR NAME,PLEASE" finally edgeworth slammed a fist down to the desk making everyone jump. He rarely shouted so loud. He must of thought the same thing you had from the look on his face.

"Seems like he's having a bit of trouble having Miss Oldbag saying her name" Phoenix muttered to you making you slightly smile.

"Wendy Oldbag, dearie. So just call me "grandma." It's practically my name! So even when I was young I was an Oldbag, but not really that was just my name dearie. Still how the other children would make fun of me and just because of my name can you believe it? But there was this boy, the captain of the chess club in junior high, and when he called me an old bag well I just cried and cried because I had a crush on him you see-" Oldbag seemed to ramble until jumping.

"OBJECTION!" You weren't sure this was the sort of thing Edgeworth could object to but you weren't gonna stop him. "I... object to the witness's talkativeness." Edgeworth looks tired already.

"Objection sustained! The witness will refrain from rambling on the stand." The judge hit his gavel down and Oldbag huffed a bit.

"I was just getting to the good part dearie!" She didn't seem to pleased.

"Perhaps we can get to the testimony?" Edgeworth pressed his fingers to his head with a long drawn out sigh trying to keep it together. She must really be getting on his nerves.

"Now, the witness was stationed at the main gate on the day of the murder, correct?" The judge spoke to Oldbag turning to look at her in the witness stand.

"Yessey I was!" Oldbag flashed a smile to the judge and you ran a hand over your face.

"And to get to the scene of the murder, someone would have to pass by you?" The judge raised a brow.

"You know your stuff, dearie!" Oldbag hummed out.

"The witness may start her testimony" the judge waited for her to start and you just leaned over the desk a bit with a finished expression making Phoenix hold in a laugh.

"On the day of the murder, I arrived at the guard station at 1:00 PM. Poor old Hammer and the rest had been doing a run-through there since the morning.
I, well, I had some errands to run that morning. Anyway, it was 1:00 when I got to the guard station. I was at the main gate from then until 5:00!
Now, the murder happened at 2:30 PM, right? Interesting to me, because a certain man walked right by me at 2:00 PM. It was Powers! That man right there, and he was heading toward the studio!" Oldbag ended her testimony with a point to Powers who was blowing his nose and trying not to cry anymore than he already had. This was going to be quite the day...
