The Four of Us (xvi)

"Stop interrupting, Shuu!" Jun put a hand over her mouth.

"Yes. One wish. For all of them together." Kame said.

"Now, this time, the villagers were stumped.

Of course, they all had something they wanted dearly,
more than anything in the world,
but how could they agree on just one thing?
Would that mean giving up on each other's wishes just to help someone else?
Was it okay to be selfish here?
Or should they be selfless?
But then, this chance might never come again.
With this in mind, the villagers fought.
They screamed and hit each other,
each one claiming that his or her wish is the most important.
This continued until one villager yelled out in a loud voice:
'Enough!
I don't want us to fight.
Look at what we've become.
Separated over our petty, greedy desires.
If it's like this, then I'd rather not have the wish.
Why can't we go back to how we used to be?
'
The other three were quite surprised,
since that one villager never usually raised her voice.
They looked at each other once again and had an epiphany.
'That's it!' They said.

Realizing that the most important thing to all of them was each other,

in the end,
they all agreed on one wish: to be together forever in eternal happiness.
The bird, having witnessed everything,
happily granted their wish by protecting the tree with a magic barrier
that would allow their souls to enter it once they die.
This way, since trees lived for hundreds of years,
they could be together in peace and happiness even after passing away.
That's why this legend is called the 'Tree of Eternal Happiness.'

And now,

it has become sort of a myth in this village.
If four people of the same age ever find the tree that holds the four villagers' souls,
they will be able to be together forever."
