Chapter 15
Adrien's POV
After school, I rather reluctantly went to find Kagami. She was leaning against a tree, hugging her books to her chest. I found this rather adorable but reminded myself that I was in love with Marinette. Plagg remained motionless, frozen with shock and grief in my pocket. Even the inviting stench of Camembert didn't draw him out.
"Adrien!" Kagami exclaimed when she saw me, wrapping her arms around me.
I awkwardly embraced her back and pulled away. "H-Hey Kagami," I greeted her nervously, eyes searching around for Marinette.
"Let's go get an ice-cream." Kagami slipped her hand in mine, smiling sweetly up at me.
I was once again reminded of why I fell in love with her. Or not, according to Plagg. The gentleness and sincerity in her gaze truly touched my heart. "Uh, sure!"
"Its been hard for you, hasn't it?" she asked in her soft voice. "So many assessments." Kagami sighed, her eyes clouding. "My mother threatened to take me out of school if I didn't do well."
"That's awful," I responded, a hole beginning to open up in my heart. Just when Kagami needed me most, I left her. Neglected her. Why did I do that? I furrowed my brows, trying to think of a reasonable answer. Was it just because of Plagg and the soulmarks?
"You seem deep in thought," remarked Kagami. Her stride matched mine and she looked at me worriedly. "Are you okay?"
I shrugged. "Just thinking about soulmarks," I murmured.
Kagami flinched. After a long moment of pause, she said, "We can always choose what we want. Soulmates don't always end up together. You know that, right?"
Slowly, I shook my head. "No, I didn't know." Suddenly, I was alert, ready to soak in any information relating to soulmarks.
"It's what your heart decides."
We reached the ice-cream cart and bought an ice-cream to share.
"You have a choice in everything, Adrien." Kagami sat on the bench, blinking her brown eyes up at me. She pressed her hand to my chest and I leaned into her touch. "Follow your heart."
"I have a choice in everything?" I echoed. I frowned. "But aren't soulmates chosen long before birth? Someone told me that..."
Plagg jerked in my pocket. I could feel his sadness fading away, replaced with hurt and anger.
"Who do you trust more, Adrien?" Kagami questioned.
"It's not a matter of trust," I retorted hotly. "It's what is true."
"But what I am saying is true," Kagami persisted. "You can choose your destiny, Adrien. Choose me. I'm your true soulmate." She gazed up at me. "I can feel it. You want me."
I closed my eyes, trying to fight back the urge. Could I really change soulmates? Kagami's gentle hand stroked my cheek, hair brushing against mine.
My heart sped up. I was torn. Marinette, she was my first true love. But Kagami was my second love. Didn't a telling say that whoever you fell in love with second was who you truly loved? Because if you really did love the first person, why would you fall in love with the second?
(A/N: That was a bit confusing. Sorry.)
My golden hair brushed against Kagami's. "Kagami, I-"
A sob. A single sob. A single sob interrupted my sentence. One that sounded all too familiar. Marinette? My eyes flew open, trying to turn my head. But Kagami held my face in place. I yanked my face away from her, glowering.
"Stay back," I growled, jumping up. My piercing green eyes scanned everywhere for Marinette, but I couldn't find her.
"Adrien! Wait!" Kagami grabbed my wrist, a confused look in her eyes. "What's wrong?"
"Marinette!" I informed her hurriedly. "I think she's upset about something."
"So?" Kagami was standing up, a hand on her hip.
"Isn't Marinette your friend?" I asked coolly. Kagami loosened her grip on my wrist and I let it fall to my side. "Isn't she?"
"Not anymore." Kagami's eyes were shadowed with jealousy.
"Well, I'm not wasting any more time." I turned swiftly. "If you want to talk to me again, inform me at once." I left her standing there.
My green eyes narrowed as the wind swept through my hair. My shoes thumped against the concrete, long strides covering more distance.
"It is I, Camera Man!" A huge black figure knocked over buildings, his camera dangling from his neck.
"You've got to be kidding me!" I exclaimed. Plagg hovered out silently. "Plagg, claws out!"
(A/N: Yes, I know he's transforming in the middle of the street, but pretend no one is around, okay?)
Multi Mouse was nowhere to be seen. I leapt into the action, batting away what seemed like a flash of light that you seemed to be able to bat back at the Camera Man.
"Where's Multi Mouse?" I asked myself, gritting my teeth.
"Well, well. Looks like the kitty is all alone," cackled the Camera Man.
"Not alone!" someone yells.
My heart sinks. Not Multi Mouse.
Rena Rouge grinned, jumping behind me. Carapace followed.
"Where's Multi Mouse?" I asked.
"Said she had something extremely important to do." Carapace shrugged. He frowned. "But she looked pretty upset."
Rena examined me carefully. "Because of the fact that you rejected her," she said, a gleam in her eyes. "Isn't that right, Chat Noir?"
