Innocent Beginings

Emily didn't like Chase. It wasn't personal it was just that the guy was kind of a jerk. Even more than that, there was something off about him, like that one person in every group that didn't know when people were looking down at them. They just keep on acting a fool and thinking that everyone else seen them as the greatest. Well Chase was one of those guys, with the exception that people did like him. Maybe it was his confidence, or the way he carried himself, one had to admit that he had a lot going for himself. He had a cushy job and a flash car, but still he didn't seem to have any friends his own age. True he had dropped out several years before but somehow he had fallen in with the crowd two years his junior. Emily wouldn't have minded so much except this was her crowd and Daniel was her boyfriend, meanwhile Chase was always dragging Dan along with him.

She had to admit the pumpkin gag was a good one. Before moving to the larger town of Nailsworth, Chase had lived in the far sleepier town of Beaute. There he told tales of the perfect prank, only problem was that he needed help to do it and the first person to jump was the ever faithful Daniel. It wasn't the Halloween-esque style, the time consuming work or even the risk being caught stealing, that bothered Emily. It was how whenever Chase wanted to do something or go somewhere, Daniel would drop everything, fall in line behind him and consequently drag her along with them. It wasn't just her either, several of Daniel's friends would come too. It was like Chase had his own little troupe of followers, like somehow he was the new Tyler Durden.

So it was with a slightly nervous annoyed feeling that Emily helped gut the stolen vegetables and carve the faces. They drank while they worked, Chase having supplied the drinks to his underage following. At first Emily had been happy to have a legal age person to supply them liquor but these days she sipped her vodka begrudgingly while Daniel talked crap with Chase.

"This old lady lives just outside town." Chase rambled excitedly. "She's always home and only ever goes out to get food and stuff."

"Won't she just call the cops?" Emily pointed out.

"Nah." Chase smirked. "There isn't even a cop shop in town, the nearest one is two towns away. Trust me the cops never go out there, the town is just all old people and dole bludgers."

"How do you know?" Emily sighed knowing it was a loosing battle, Chase had his mind set already.

"Trust me! I used to live on the other side of a row of trees up near her place, I used to go drink there when my dad was home. I've watched that house all day, all she does is washing and gardening, the rest of the time I guess she just sits inside."

"So we dress up and surround her house with the pumpkins. Then what?" Daniel asked enthusiastically.

"She not going to have any lollies you know." Emily insisted.

"I know that!" Chase snapped. "I just think it would be cool to surprise her, who knows, I heard around town she has a lot of cash."

Emily rolled her eyes but the guys weren't looking, instead she turned to Ariel the youngest of the group. While the rest were all sixteen with the exception of Chase, she was fourteen. She only really tagged along because of Peter her older brother was best friends with Daniel, or at least they used to be. So far the whole exercise had been an endeavour in childishness and it smacked of a waste of time, but seeing as none of them had anything better to do, they all chose to do this.
